Crossroads Elementary School
Studio Works ARCH 508 Fall 2016
Project Type: Elementary School Design Course: ARCH 508 Nilou Vakil Date: Fall 2016
Develop and design an elementary school in the Crossroads area in Kansas City, Missouri for 200 neighboring students. Develop detailed classrooms, programmed floor plans, wall sections, and physical models of wall section. Crossroads Elementary School is designed as a public school that promotes blended and collaborative learning through the schools design and flexibility. The design incorporates large flex spaces and learning pockets for students to break out of the traditional classroom, and experience a different kind of learning, through relaxation and constant movement, to stimulate the brain. In addition to the schools flexibility, the design also promotes a fun and playful adventure for the students as the celebrated grand staircase take the students on an adventure overlooking the Kansas City cityscape. Through the use of large windows the school feels open, creating views from the outside, as well as maximizes the use of sunlight for lighting the school. The schools angled shapes, overhangs, and exterior materials contrast the surrounding buildings adding a new and unique landmark for the Crossroads District.

The main entry is located on the first floor, as well as administration, the teachers lounge, the gym, main staircase, elevator, mechincal, and learning flex spaces. A new bus and car lane was added to the east side of the school to allow for easier pickup and drop-off access. Parking spaces were added along the west side of the school, as well as parallel parking along the surrounding streets. New landscaping was added for privacy, and green spaces were implemented in unused space.

All school amenities are located on the second floor; the library, art room, art gallery, music room, cafeteria, and extra learning lounges. A second point of entry is located on the west side of the school, with egress stairs, to access the floors above and below.
All classrooms are located on the third floor which can be accessed from the main stair case. Each classroom expands into one large classroom, and each grade has a learning pocket attached. The covered outdoor playground is also located on the third floor.

Museum Building Study
ARCH 281 Fall 2015 Project Type: Kunsthaus Bergenz Musuem Building Study Course: ARCH 281 Nilou Vakil Date: Fall 2015
This semester long project consisted of dissecting the facade of the Kunsthaus Bergenz Museum in Bergenz, Austria. The first project consisted of building massing and hand sketches to understand the museum in context. The second project consisted of creating a detailed section of the facade in Sketchup which I then created a physical model of the detailed section.

9th Street Market
ARCH 380 Spring 2016 Project Type: 9th Street Market Proposal Course: ARCH 380 Farhana Ferdous Date: Spring 2016
With a focus on healthy communities, chose a section of 9th Street in Lawrence, Ks, and design a place for the community to make healthier choices. My group and I designed a community health market, called 9th Street Market. This market would supply the surrounding neighborhoods food sources, it would house local and healthy homegrown foods, and incorporate an indoor and outdoor farmers market. It would also provide cooking classes, an upper level and roof top banquet hall for neighborhood meetings, and offer event spaces. To also incorporate healthy communities, the roads surrounding the market were also redesigned for safe access to the 9th Street Market. The design incorporates safe bike lanes, wider sidewalks for pedestrians, street parallel parking, and smaller roadway. Tree lawns and plants were added along the streets, which act as safety barriers for cyclists and pedestrians, as well as soften the streetscape. The 9th Street Market was designed with recycled local materials, it showcases a green wall, and floor to ceiling windows to minimize electricity use. The addition of the 9th Street Market would encourage the surrounding neighborhoods to make healthier choices, which in return could create a healthier community. University Bike Parking
ARCH 381 Spring 2016 Project Type: Campus Bike Parking Proposal Course: ARCH 381 Farhana Ferdous Date: Spring 2016
Existing site: Bus stop, tunnel to Union and Museum, and surface area parking lot
Currently the University of Kansas is lacking the appropriate amount of bike parking needed to meet parking regulations. During this semester long project my group and I focused on using an under used site, and turning it into a major bike parking and storage hub, while working with our clients, KU Parking and Transit. The site is located west of the Student Union, just north of the Spencer Art Museum. The design focused on turning the concrete structure into a modern bike parking structure that students, faculty, and Lawrence residents could utilize. The bottom of the structure was turned into secured long term bike parking that can only be accessed with a pass, which gives bike owners a safe a secure way to store bikes during inclement weather, or biking off seasons. The top of the structure has a modern covered bike parking area which allows for short term parking. The bikes hang from the structure, which allows for more bike storage and more room for pedestrians to walk and lounge. A challenge of the project was designing a way for the cyclists to access both floors of the 2-story structure, while not greatly interrupting the current landscape. Bike lane ramps were added to the stairs, as well as ramps coming from Mississippi Street. A new bike lane was added along the bus lane, which runs north of the structure. The design of the site would provide a great bike parking solution for The University of Kansas bike parking shortage.
