PROCESS OF MASSING Series and series of simple-line diagram has been made during the stage of analysis, from the scale of overal to the zooming in of detail. The objective of the exercise, is to figure out how the massing of the podium, the tower and the unit are made. The expected outcome is to specify a certain methodology, so as to lead to a certain approach to architecture, especially on the traditional podium-and-tower residential buildings of Hong Kong.

H,T

With the aid of making study models of different scale, besides understanding the forming of the podium, the process shift to the forming of the tower, from inside and outside, like a fluid, by the location of kitchen and bathroom at the corner, and the location of claddings and openings on the facade wall. The importance of corner, being the transition point of the internal usage and the external form start to be highlighted, which leads the way of the proposal.

AN EXPERIMENT. AN APPROACH

Selected Work 2011 - 2016

To create something new, and to foresee what are the potenials, are the next steps after all the studies and analysis. Specifically in phase 7 of Mei Foo, there is a chance for further development from the corners of the buildings. The trial-and-error process of doing of massing based on the original use of corner, the studies of massing (both internally and externally), and the view and green environment of the surrounding area. The corner is no longer of old use, but a new use of space.

11

H,T

A BUILDING. A CORNER.

Tutor : David Erdman

To understand architecture in Hong Kong, knowing the residential building is a must. Rather than studying all the news types built within the last two decades, the site is in Mei Foo instead, to go back to the origin, to analyse what has been constructed in late 70s in order to fulfil the increase demand of living. The expected outcome is a subjective way of how Mei Foo is built, like a tracing experiment. And the proposal begins, from an experiment.

Brief : Altered (e)States, Part II

Semester : Year 3 Semester 2

Year : 2013 - 2014

A R C H I T

A MOMENT. AN EXPERIENCE The new use of space has to be capable of bringing the users a new sense of experience. With all the functions, views, size of space involved, materials and size of openings on the facade are also critical and specifical considerations in the creation of the new corner. These also control how the buildings look like from the outside, which make the new corner be easily identical and recognizable. The new experience is not just from inside but also the outside.

SEMI-AUTONOMY

L

L

Through the experiment and the proposal, the most crucial point is about the approach to view a massing. Through viewing internally and externally, the fluidity of massing is shown clearly. Here, it is important to know how to control a massing and how to let the massing controls. From in and out, the massing formed has it own character, such as form and functions, which deals with the internal and the external, in a semi-autonomous way.

E C T U R E

NEW EXPERIENCE. NEW SPACE. The corner space is activated but more activities should be introduced, e.g. a personal library, on top of circulating and viewing scenery, in order to introduce a ‘third space’, other than living and servant space, to offer users new sense of movement, to create new moments. With the design of facade, space can be defined from the outside. The proposal all comes from experiments of approach. It is from arhcitecture to architecture.

Materials of facade around the corner should remain transparent, so as not to block great views around the corner space . Full-height glass would be a suitable choice. As the transtition is directly linked to living space, transparency wouldn’t cause serious privacy problem. However, as it goes along and turns round the angle, the facade can no longer be that transparent as it reaches the bedroom and the other private space of the unit. Subtle and gradual change of pattern and transparency has to be made, in order to facilitate the advantage of the corner, without sacrificing privacy of the other.

Selected Work 2011 - 2016

Walled city is famous for its spatial experience, yet it was demolished for several reasons. Some of the defect of it is that the intensive building density didn’t provide sufficient amount of light. Another problem would be in the hygienic aspect. Yet, there is no doubt that Kowloon walled city created a strong community, by the architecture itself as well as the users within the city.

Tutor : Dylan Baker - Rice

Being the largest housing estate in the world, Mei Foo Sun Chuen obtains the biggest numbers of blocks within an estate, which spreads around the whole Mei Foo district. By conducting analysis of different scales, the rules of locating towers are reviewed and the relationship across districts is obtained. By comparing the programs that happen with other district nearby, the possibility of introducing mixuse of residential and working studio is spotted. As developing through process of massing, units and façade, features of the demolished Kowloon Walled City is traced, which is famous for its high intensity, irregularity and varying living conditions. The issue of reviving this “heritage” is questioned.

H,T

The end result is that through phase to phase in the project, a combination of different massing scheme, units type and arrangement and façade system is used. The idea is to create a sense of changes, which is transition. It may include connection and separation in terms of space. Yet, the most important thing is that it includes change of experience and time, which is the focus of the project so that it would be site adaptable and specific to Mei Foo Users, in order to create new experience in each phase.

Selected Work 2011 - 2016

As a matter of fact that there is so much relation between the 2 city, the project aims to revive some of the key elements on Mei Foo Sun Chuen phase 7 with reference to the wall city. Yet this is also an experiment to resolve what has been unsolved in the wall city. Most importantly, the main famous is to rebuild a community, with the help of spatial moment, with respect to the users in Mei Foo especially.

Throughout the analysis of Mei Foo, other than the classic podium-tower style of Hong Kong, the mass and void arrangement is also studied. As the research process go on, the studies of previous residential project is made, gradual development from the past can be seen, which comes to a comparison between the famous wall city and Mei Foo. the space development is quite similar, of which light allowance is a critical elements for both. Analysis of different scale is done, in order to figure of a pattern of the tower location. Within the block scale, the hidden rule that controls is the grid system. With the area of the floor plate filling a grid, the slight variation of position of towers in different phase is done by shifting and turning the grids in different direction.

19

H,T Selected Work 2011 - 2016

Similarities between Kowloon walled-city and Mei Foo Sun Chuen in grid, solid & void and facade system.

From the elevation of the 2 sites, we can see the shared similarity on top of the intensive stacking of units. The punch-hole openings and the texture of the exterior wall created by the location of balcony and the exterior cladding shows the typical characteristics of facade and usage of residential units in Hong Kong. Through times there are gradual developements on that. Yet, the core concept underlining is basically the same. In Kowloon walled city, street between buildings can be called corridor, as they are so narrow. One factor that led to this is the freedom of adding-on extra cladding on the facade. By doing this, it gives more `characteristic’ to the exterior of the units, so that people can identify their own unit from the outside. Nowadays, residential buildings are so similar as there are given forms to build. Yet, the size of balcony and the colour painted on the exterior wall of Mei Foo tower actually provide a way to distinguish different types of unit. Combining the grid system in plan, this helps to create as many kinds of units as possible, which is actually how the system of walled city works, but in more organized way.

MATERIALITY Three types of unit arranged in 2 different way. As the basic programme and massing form is set, onward development would be unit types and facade. Applying the concept of the interrelation of unit types and facade, the packing of units may test out different facade pattern. The prefabricated unit blocks can fit back to the existing grid. The material usage is considered to make different programme distinguishable.

The smooth facade with punch-hole openings indicates the service apartment. The reason for making a smooth facade is to state that the types of living units here is different from the ones next to this. Glass facade is used for the studio building, as act as a large `showcase’ of arts piece or exhibition programme. CROCHET A BRIDGE

There are many ways in knitting a scarf, a floor mat or any functional as well as decorative things we needed in daily life. The major objective in this project is to apply one of the knitting skills i.e. crochet, in constructing a bridge or tunnel without separating the structure. In other words, both the plate for circulatiion and the roof and ground structure have to be connected within one method of crochet. The form and level of opacity are also determined by the methodology. style and the system of crocheting.

FOREWOR D In 2003 the then PM Thaksin launched an astounding Bangkok Fashion City campaign that cost Thailand 1.6 billion project. Targeted to complete 9 sub-projects, the project was shelved in 2006 and little of its legacy was sustained in the Thai fashion industry. The campaign was pitched again in 2014 at a much lower budget, promoting Bangkok as the Asia Fashion Hub.

TO TACKLE Selected Work 2011 - 2016

The intention of becoming the node for fashion industry in Asia does not solely depends on its capacity to hold fashion events, while runway shows only take place twice a year. Moreover, these events can only secure a fixed niche of audience. Therefore, it is of paramount importance that the fashion hub can reach out extensively to the Thai population, from aspiring designers, to eager consumers. The connection is a transparent and continuous loop of education to promotion.

The story begins from the disappearance of the child of a family: A father, who is a speech therapist, is losing his desire to speak after the exodus of his beloved child; A high school student is facing questions of betrayal, separation and his own sexuality all by himself after breaking up with his partner; An 25-year-old homosexual orphan is getting tired of his lustful lifestyle. The only thing that can soothen his apathy towards life is a CD...

Pak-kiu works as a gaffer while waiting for his first break in front of the camera. An inviting target of ridicule, he remains unwavering that he will rise above the sordid realities of the glamorous world of film-making with his determination to be a proper actor rather than a star. So when he is offered a bit part as a cancer patient in a new film, he jumps at the chance to practise method acting, literally getting into his character and inhabiting him through claiming membership of a support group, which reunites him with an old classmate. However, the reunion, shrouded in a façade of altruistic motive, leaves him ill-prepared for a role in real life that is not so easily dismissed as a character in the script...

With thousands kinds of love and hate, and with sorrow in everyday life, silence is invading us, growing and expanding, without touching our awareness.
