Long before the gypsies found their way to town and onto the small screen, it was antiques that put this part of Texas on the map. indy Knoll sits at the highest point of a wide and rolling savannah with sweeping views of the bucolic countryside between LaGrange and Round Top, Texas. “There’s almost always a nice breeze; thus the name Windy Knoll,” the homeowner says. Shaded by old oaks, pecans and towering sycamore trees, the land itself is part of Texas history. Once home to Apache and Tonkawa tribes, this land and most of Fayette County was part of the land grant for Stephen F. Austin’s original Texas colony.

Before and after the Texas Revolution, settlers thrived on surrounding farms with ample water from the creeks that feed the meandering Colorado River. “When you are sitting on the top of the knoll with 360 degree views, it’s good for the soul and peace of mind,” the homeowner says. Designed by J. P. Bartel of Houston and built by Brian Fischer and Tim Langham with Fischer-Langham Construction, the 10,000-square-foot house pays visual homage to an early

wood and stone homestead, albeit on a grand three-story scale with every conceivable amenity. The independent off-grid compound generates its own electricity, with state-of-the art solar paneling and its own water with four wells and a sophisticated rainwater collection system with filtering technology for potable water. What’s not used for drinking or household needs can be used for irrigation. Emblematic of the home as a peaceful retreat, the grounds feature an exact replica of the 13th century labyrinth at Chartres Cathedral in France. A labyrinth is a circular stone maze used for walking meditation, relaxation and reflection. In addition to the main house, there are four outbuildings, including a 3,800-square-foot “barn,” a negative-edge pool with a pool house, a fully-equipped outdoor kitchen, and a fish shack retreat. An underground tornado shelter next to the house provides for up to 20 people in an emergency. “For such a large home, it doesn’t feel overwhelming,” Fischer says. “It’s warm and inviting, the kind of place you can raise a family.” 44 house& home | August 2016 |

The main house has seven bedrooms, nine full baths, and two half baths, including the pool house. Smart technology is woven throughout for infrastructure, communication, security and entertainment, but you don’t have to be a computer wizard to use it, he explains. “The craftsmanship on the entire estate is exceptional from the skeletal structure of the house, all the way to the pecan wood floors and the standing seamed metal roof,” Fischer adds. It took two years to build and was completed in 2012. “We had more than 160 men and women working on the project, and I believe everyone of them is extremely proud of what we accomplished,” Fischer says. To enter the 110-acre estate, you pass through a stone and iron security gate and follow a tree-lined roadway to the three-story white house with handsome dark blue shutters. A circular drive ties the compound together. By the broad, wrap-around porch on the southeast side, two massive mahogany doors mark the main entry. To the left of the foyer is a library-sitting room paneled in antique longleaf yellow pine. To the right is a formal dining room. 46 house& home | August 2016 |

The primary living area is a “great” room with panoramic views of the countryside, a 20-foot vaulted ceiling and a wall-sized stone fireplace. It opens onto the terrace and adjacent deck that anchors the oversized pool, tiled to 12-feet. Flanking the great room is a kitchen with custom built cabinets, two nine-foot islands, and Wolf-Sub Zero appliances. “Everything about the kitchen works well,” the homeowner says. “The soapstone top on the prep island is awesome and having two sinks is nice. And, you can never go wrong with a Wolf cook top.” The master suite on the first floor sits next to a covered terrace. “It has beautiful views and the bath has a walk-in shower and a slipper tub with separate his and her dressing areas,” Fischer says. A spiral staircase climbs to the second and third floors, lit by antique lanterns acquired from Round Top. Those not inclined to hike the stairs may take the elevator located by the kitchen.

Halfway between Houston and Austin on Hwy 290 is a little piece of paradise called Carmine, Texas. From daily outings to daily living, we’ve got it all... • Shops • Museums • Gasoline • Rental Hall • Church • Bank • Farm & Ranch Supply • Restaurants • Grocers • Mechanic • B&B • Post Office • Fire Station • Great Park With so much to experience come see what makes Carmine

“the little city with a big heart.”

A dramatic staircase leads up to second and third floors, lit by lanterns found at the Round Top antiques fair. Below: kitchen in barn.

On the second floor, there are four bedrooms, each with a bath. There is also a sitting room and an octagonal space for displaying art. The third floor is one large open space with windows on four sides to frame the views. Should the homeowner ever need to get away from it all, it’s only 1,200 feet from the main house to the fish shack, which sits on the largest of four ponds. It is homey, but more elaborate than the word “shack” suggests, with a covered dock, a fire pit, and comfortable living quarters. “You do not see many places like this; it is very Texas, truly relaxing, and definitely one of a kind,” Fischer says.
