The Spirit of Sarah Boone Still Lives Through Us...

Sarah Boone was the inventor of the ironing board allowing sleeves of women's garments to be ironed more easily. The ironing board designed by Boone was very narrow, curved, and made of wood. Her ironing board was actually reversible and allowed the user to iron both sides of the sleeve.

LETITIA PLUMMER FOR U.S. CONGRESS 22ND DISTRICT OF TEXAS

I grew up in Houston watching my father make a difference in people’s lives every day through his dental practice, and It was his example that inspired me to pursue my own career. Today, I am a woman on a mission, to give people great smiles, boosting their confidence and sense of self-worth. Thanks to years of hard work and perseverance, and with the support of the best staff any small business owner could ask for, I own a successful dental practice with two locations serving the communities of the 22nd Texas Congressional District. My practice was not my first venture into owning a business, however. Shortly after graduating from Atlanta’s historic Spelman College, I started a company called Safe Hands selling latex gloves. While I felt sure I wanted to follow my father into dentistry, I wanted to gain experience managing a business first. I quickly learned that managing a small business is one of the toughest things you can do—and I was hooked. The rewards of running my own business gave me the courage to return to school and pursue my dental career. Being self-employed has helped me develop a well-rounded perspective on the challenges

faced by middle income families today. I am confronted by the flaws in our healthcare system every day. I’ve found it difficult to find affordable, adequate coverage through the plans available to small employers like myself. If the heart of the American Dream is the ability to control your own destiny, then we need legislation that empowers people to innovate and forge new paths. Rather than hamper would-be entrepreneurs with unmanageable healthcare costs, we need to fix the Affordable Care Act for all Americans. I know I’ve been lucky. I chose a great career, and I was born at a time when a middleclass girl’s fresh out of college could launch a company, then build up a business to be able to overcome the inevitable bumps in the road. The opportunities available to young people of people trying to change careers today are not the same as those I or my parents had. These are not small problems. I’ve watched middle-class families get squeezed from every side by a political process that’s left their lives hanging in the balance. I decided it wasn’t enough to be angry about it anymore—it’s time to take action. I’ve served my community as a health care provider and an employer. Now I want to serve the people of Texas’ 22nd District in Congress.

“Dr. Letitia Plummer is a Modern-Day Trailblazer!”

Dr. Patricia Bath is a modern-day Trailblazer

Dr. Patricia Bath invented the Laserphaco Probe, which is used to remove cataracts. Dr Patricia’s probe made leaps in cataract treatment and made the procedure to remove it faster and more efficient. She also received her doctorate from Howard University and was the first African-American woman to receive a patent in medicine.

Congresswoman Barbara Jordan

She was the first African American to be elected to the Texas Senate after reconstruction, and the first Southern African-American woman elected to the United States House of Representatives.

DEAR PRECINCT 7 REGISTERED VOTERS:

I am seeking this position because first I believe that I am qualified. Second, I believe that it is time for new leadership. I want to Bring Back the People’s Court. That means opening up the courthouse doors to the community in which it serves. It also means providing services, such as educational training, social services, and resources to Pro Se litigants who cannot afford legal representation. My goal is to partner with organizations in our community to provide additional services to those in need. Below are five ways, in which I plan to accomplish this goal: • Enhance courthouse technology by creating a ”Courthouse App” • Hold monthly night court and/or weekend court • Establish an onsite resource center for Pro Se Litigants • Open up the courthouse doors and allow organizations and professionals to host educational seminars • Work with the Constable’s office to promote safety in the community

The Spirit of Elijah McCoy Still Lives Through Us... Invented: Lubrication Devices

One of the earliest African-American inventors was Elijah McCoy, who in spite of his training as a mechanical engineer from Scotland, invented lubrication devices that smoothened and made train travel more efficient. Unable to find professional employment in his field, McCoy had no choice but to take up a job as firearm and oiler for the Michigan Central Railroad. Here McCoy invented a lubrication cup that would evenly distribute oil on the train’s engine parts allowing it to travel continuously without stopping for maintenance. Apart from this Elijah McCoy acquired 60 patents during his lifetime inventing the ironing board, lawn sprinkler and other machines. In 1920, he established the Elijah McCoy Manufacturing Company for the production of lubricators that bore his name.

In addition to this, Latimer is known for inventing an improved version of the railroad car bathroom and an early version of the air conditioner.
