President’s Message

It is hard to believe my term as your 2012 Houston BOMA President is already coming to an end. Time flies when you’re having fun. It has been a very busy year for Houston BOMA and I have enjoyed leading this great organization. In my year as President, I feel that we have succeeded in reaching the goal of making Houston BOMA fun and relevant. It was a year of records – record attendance at the Building Expo, record fundraising for the BAC PAC and Houston Fire Fighter’s Foundation, and record membership for the organization. And the great news: we’re showing no signs of slowing down. I encourage you to become more involved and be part of what I consider to be the best organization that Houston’s commercial real estate professionals can turn to for advocacy, industry information, education, networking and professionalism. Every fall the board of directors holds a two day retreat and strategic planning session hosted by our incoming president. This year’s retreat took place in Kemah, and was great opportunity for the board to brainstorm and focus on the year ahead. I am excited to say that I feel like I’ll be leaving you

in great hands with incoming President, Mary Stanton, with Jones Lang LaSalle. Over 500 of you were on hand in September for our first-ever joint luncheon with NAIOP, featuring famed political prognosticator Dr. Larry Sabato. His insights to this year’s election were interesting, entertaining and thoughtprovoking. I’m sure we will all be tuned in on Election Day to see how his predictions play out. I saw many of you at the Fire Fighters Foundation of Houston Gala on September 11, where we paid tribute to the Houston Fire Fighters and first responders. Guests were treated to hearing speaker Donovan Campbell and his incredible tale of courage, leadership and brotherhood as he retold his stories from two tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan. He drew this comparison between Marines and Fire Fighters – “We really have the same job. When everybody else is running out, we are running in.” On that note, I encourage you to continue your support of the Fire Fighters’ Foundation. We owe it to them and to our fellow citizens to make sure that they are equipped with the lifesaving tools that they need.

Although this is my last President’s Message, we still have quite a bit in store for the rest of 2012. November 7th brings us our Second Annual Medical Real Estate Summit, which will be held at Memorial Hermann in Texas Medical Center (which, in case you didn’t notice is the day after the Presidential Election). Later in the month, we will shift our mood from election season to another season – basketball! Join us to hear from Gretchen Sheirr, the Vice President of Ticket Sales & Services for the Houston Rockets. We will also have the Rockets Power Dancers on hand for a fun photo-op. We will roundout the year with our annual Holiday Luncheon, which is always a sell-out. In an election year that is inherently filled with uncertainty, you can count on the steadfast dedication of Houston BOMA to make sure that our issues and interests are being well represented and fought for. It has been my great pleasure and honor to represent you as your Houston BOMA President, and I look forward to seeing the great heights this organization will lead us to in the future. ■

Working Smart SEMINAR BOMA’s Professional Development & Education Committee has been busy putting together educational seminars that are relevant, interesting, and informative. The most recent, Working Smart, taught attendees how to save hours in their day by better utilizing technology and being more efficient. The seminar was so popular that several attendees are going to take a follow-up class! Special thanks to Williams Tower for hosting us, and MW Cleaners for making this seminar possible! â–

BOMA at the Ballpark WAS A HOME RUN! Houston BOMA cut loose and had some fun at Constellation Field, the brand-new home of the Sugar Land Skeeters baseball team! All in attendance had the pleasure of witnessing BOMA Prez, Mark Nicholson, throw out the first pitch of the game! (It was a strike, by the way.) Guests enjoyed a relaxing evening of food, friends and Friday night fireworks in addition to the game. A BIG thank-you to our sponsors who made this awesome event possible:

Luncheon Success! Over 500 people joined BOMA and NAIOP for our September luncheon to hear nationally-renowned political prognosticator Dr. Larry Sabato give his insights to this year’s election. His crystal ball prediction…this election is way too close to call. But he said whoever wants to win the White House must win Florida. It will be interesting to see how all the varying factors he discussed will affect this election! ■
