From the Yorkshire brogue to the Geordie twang, the north of England is known for its warm hospitality and wide range of regional accents. The diversity of dialects in the UK can make it seem like you’re in a different country after a 20-minute drive!

nce you’ve tackled the language barrier, you’ll no doubt get to experience the best the north of England has to offer, making this a must-see region filled with natural beauty for anyone travelling through to Scotland. York is a great place to start. This historic city boasts one of the most magnificent cathedrals in the world – York Minster. Clifford Tower, a medieval masterpiece built by William the Conqueror to fend off northern rebels, is a long-standing testament to England’s often grisly history. Making your way further north, you can immerse yourself in English countryside culture by taking the back roads, which are filled with picturesque pubs, B&Bs and manors. The Lake District showcases breathtaking lakes, soaring mountains and lush forests, it really is the jewel in the crown of the country’s national parks. But no trip to the north of England would be complete without visiting Hadrian’s Wall, with the 117km long World Heritage Site dating back to Roman occupation. Only then may you be ready to leave the north of England and continue your journey into Scotland, where you can explore the ancestral heritage of the Scottish borders along with the modern luxuries of Edinburgh. Here, you’ll find people fervently proud of their culture, heather clad glens and mysterious lochs. Go on and treat yourself to a three-course Scottish banquet with a difference – in the lavish surroundings of a 15th century medieval castle!

Many Kiwis can trace their roots back to cities, villages and even far-flung farms in this special region, from the wild Yorkshire moors to the wilds of the Scottish Highlands. There are truly a number of historic and ancestral destinations here to add to your ever-increasing bucket list that will generate a wonderful array of lifetime memories.

and beyond

You can easily spend a couple of days in this charming city, wandering the cobblestone streets and absorbing its medieval heritage. Make sure to walk around the walls, they are 3km long and provide excellent photograph opportunities. When you’ve seen enough, explore further afield. A self-drive is a great option providing lots of flexibility to stop along the way at your leisure.

Explore these dramatic regions and see for yourself the beautiful British countryside with idyllic lakes, hills and valleys that have inspired the works of many poets and authors, including William Wordsworth, Beatrix Potter and the Bronte sisters. Learn about the local folklore and history and be introduced to some lesser-known gems not often enjoyed by visitors.

Historic battles Anyone who has seen New Zealand and France battle it out on the rugby pitch over the years will know tensions can run high between these two sporting nations. But the strong bond between these countries goes far beyond these epic clashes – history reveals they are more used to fighting side by side than against each other! world war i In World War I, the Kiwis showed their warrior spirit by entering the conflict without hesitation, despite geographical limitations and the country’s small population. New Zealanders and Australians fought alongside the Allied Powers in the Battle of the Somme – a battle that would tragically claim over one million lives.

When you get to the airport, the contact telephone for the car is exactly where they say it is, the man is sitting in the van to take you to the car lot and you drive away as if you’re in your own car! In June I drove from Uzès to Saint-Jean-de-Luz in the Basque Country to host my culinary tour there – a six hour trip, made zippy and joyful by the Mégane. There are a few new technical things in the car which make long distance driving even sexier – it tells you if you are lane drifting; the lights go on automatically if it starts getting dark and the windscreen wipers go on automatically with a drop of rain. I take the car to visit the organic markets in my area and can fit lots in the boot like sunflowers, rosé, strawberries and cured hams. Dropping it off at the end is easy and stress free. You just call the drop off people in advance, turn up with the help of TomTom, hand over the papers and they drive you to the train station. Always with a smile and enquiries as to your happiness level with the car, France and life in general.

Au revoir et à la prochaine!

GREEN SPAIN the Northwestern Corner

ounded by the Atlantic Sea and bordering the Pyrenees, Northwest Spain enjoys an oceanic climate that makes it seem like a different country altogether. Nicknamed ‘Green Spain’ because of its lush landscapes, the region is quickly becoming a favourite with tourists from all around the world who relish its outstanding natural beauty, gorgeous cuisine and compelling history. There was a time when Santiago de Compestela, the capital of Galicia in Northwest Spain, attracted thousands of pilgrims who came to view the tomb of St James the Apostle. Today it remains a popular religious site, and the 800km Way of Saint James offers a fantastic opportunity to recreate the journey as a contemporary traveller. This major Christian pilgrimage route can be tackled in sections. For some this can be a spiritual experience as it is very rustic. The trek is over hilly terrain so you do need a good level of fitness to head off the beaten track. If you’re more of a foodie than a history buff, then you won’t feel alone in the north of Spain, as the Basque countryside is renowned for its cuisine. The locals spend twice as much on food than anywhere else in the country – meals form the cornerstone of Basque social events. Try the region’s famous pinxtos – miniature pieces of haute cuisine that are available in bars and restaurants up and down the region. You won’t be disappointed! The pinxtos bars crowd the narrow and noisy streets of the historical capital of San Sebastian – a vibrant coastal location also filled with loads of seafood restaurants. It also boasts some fantastic designer clothes shops, many of them being surf labels as the region has some of the best surf beaches in the whole of Spain.

Spain is known all around the world for its sun-kissed beaches, sangria and bullfighting, but if you go further afield there are even more unique experiences to be had.

scaNdiNavia’s Best kePt secrets

Gothenburg is similar to Stockholm, but with more of a rustic lure. No Scandinavian journey is complete without a trip to Berlin from the Warnemunde port. This high-energy city needs no introduction with its abundance of history and attractions. Tallinn may be a lesser-known destination, but to the surprise of many, the Estonian city is a total gem. Head to the ‘Old Town’ and enjoy the medieval charm of piazzas and churches, as well as bustling markets, bright, bold colours and friendly locals. Stroll through its intimate lanes and you’ll feel like you’re in a fairy tale.

Scandinavia exudes style and sophistication. Boasting exceptional natural beauty paired with progressive culture and fascinating history, each stop along the Baltic offers an unforgettable experience.

Where does one start with St Petersburg? This Russian city has so many spectacular features. Dazzling palaces and their expansive, opulent gardens stand in contrast to the remnants of a Soviet past.

Copenhagen’s bright colours, canals and buoyant spirit make it a must-see on your Scandinavian itinerary. Immortalise your experience with a photo by the famous Little Mermaid statue, a celebration of Dane Hans Christian Andersen’s beloved fairy tale.

The Winter Palace must be seen for its eerie history as the scene of the 1095 Bloody Sunday massacre and now an impressive Hermitage art gallery. Catherine’s Palace, just a short way out of the city, is absolutely awe-inspiring, as is Peterhof’s Palace with its impressive gardens, fountains and golden statues.

In Norway, Oslo brings together the past and the future seamlessly, with medieval buildings and ultra-modern architecture side by side. This city is known for its quality of life, innovation and history, and is exceptionally visitor-friendly. Sweden oozes refinement and an air of luxury, and Stockholm and Gothenburg are two of its most magnificent cities. In Stockholm, gorgeous pastel coloured buildings complement the smorgasbord of emerald-green parks and small islands peppered through its tranquil waterways. In summer, you’ll find each little shore dotted with sunbathers and the water filled with smiling pleasure boaters.

Helsinki, Finland, is another destination that strikes the perfect balance of old and new. While there is plenty to entertain the senses in the sleek, refined city, you might like to head to some of the small islands nearby. One, Seurasaari, is an open air museum showcasing Finnish country life dating back to the 18th century. Of course, this is just a taste of some of the destinations you can visit on a European cruise. Get inspired and prepare to sail off blissfully into the sunset.
