Climate and Weather in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka enjoys a tropical climate with varying temperatures according to location. Coastal or upland areas benefit from cool mountain or sea breeze all year round. Monsoon season is between May to September in the South and West. From October to April in the North and East of the country. These monsoons give Sri Lanka its only seasons as it is located so near the Equator. Temperatures average 27°C in Colombo and 16°C in Nuwara Eliya, which is on higher ground, all year round. Best time to travel to Sri Lanka is between the main rainy seasons. The period from October to April is the driest season on the south west coast and up in the hills. Here, some of the best beaches and many other places of tourist interest are located. Therefore the period between October and April is the best time to visit this region and is also considered the tourist season in Sri Lanka. May to September is the best time to visit the east coast, as it is dry during this period. Hence, Sri Lanka is a round-theyear destination; there is always a good time to visit at least some part of the country. “It may well be that each of Sri Lanka’s attractions is surpassed somewhere on Earth; Cambodia may have more impressive ruins, Tahiti lovelier beaches, Bali more beautiful landscapes (though I doubt it), Thailand more charming people (ditto). But I find it hard to believe that there is any country which scores so highly in all departments - which has so many advantages and so few disadvantages, especially for the western visitor.” ARTHUR C. CLARKE
