ORIGINS AND SYMBOLS

ĒOSTRE: THE SCANDINAVIAN GODDESS OF SPRING With respect to Easter holiday celebrations, its important that we understand the origins and significance of its symbolisms ĒOSTRE OR OSTARA IS A GERMANIC GODDESS WHO IS THE NAMESAKE OF THE FESTIVAL OF EASTER IN MANY LANGUAGES. During April, the pagan Anglo-Saxons held feasts in Ēostre’s honor, but this tradition died out over time and was replaced by the Christians, as a cele-

4

bration of the resurrection of Jesus. Ostara can be found in Germanic mythology as the Saxon goddess of the spring. It was her responsibility to bring the spring each year. She’s associated with the rising sun and also fertility. Spring is a time of birth, creation, light, and growth. Ostara, also called Eostre, repre-

sented all those things. Eostre had a festival of her own on the Spring Equinox. It will not surprise you to learn Eostre was associated with rabbits, the lunar moon, and colored eggs. As she was the spring goddess of fertility, an egg was her symbol. Easter occurs on the first Sunday after a full moon, after the Spring

Equinox. These ties are one explanation for how bunnies and eggs became connected to modern Easter activities. However, not much was documented about Eostre; she is barely mentioned thought Germanic pathology and it’s possible she was simply an invention of the scholarly Christian monk during the 8th century.

RELAX

ART OF THE KICKBACK With all the chaos in the world sometimes you need to just let go and kick back. Have you ever thought to yourself, “Today I’m not doing anything?” Humanity tends to forget the vast beauty around us and loose our minds in the social matrix. Take the time out today to STOP what

you’re doing completely. Formulate a specific day of the week every month to just “Kick Back”. Turn off all technology devices and just chill. Get in tune with family and most importantly “Know Thyself” as the ancestors would say.

SYSTEMIC FAILURES INSIDE THE CLASSROOMS OF THE TEXAS PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM What has education become? In fact, has it ever been a source of strength in our community.

M

ost black people would agree that education is a pivotal piece to the success of our youth. However, some people question the actual information our children receive at school. As our kids study the history of another culture, some people feel, they fail to see the importance of their own image. In addition to being taught by the Mis-educated Negro our children are subject to poor school conditions, bad food, lack of technology, no materials, and in some cases a shortage of teachers. With the lack of resources and inadequate lessons on African culture in black schools, it looks like our children were setup to fail.

With budget cuts on the rise, teachers are moving to better paying districts. This causes title one school to suffer because substitute teachers are placed in classes and are unprepared to teach. Furthermore, negative behavior from students increase, due to lack of classroom management from inexperienced teachers. Some schools don’t have money to pay for substitute teachers, so they have to split classes among teachers. Other issues include lack of supplies and poor food quality. Students refuse to eat lunch due to spoiled milk, rotten apples, and cafeterias that are infested with roaches. This is devastating, considering that most kids come to

school just so they can eat. Sadly, the community surrounding the school is impoverished and no one seems to care that the school’s operation is a direct connection with community. Even though our grandparents lived in poor neighborhoods as well, they had a higher awareness of society’s negative connotation about the black community. Teachers, genuinely provided inspiration to students with knowledge of self and positive affirmations for students to mentally digest. I’ll be “Black”, to be continued…

being, was regarded as a profound mystery from the beginning. The ancient Egyptians adopted the egg as a symbol of the first manifestation of the cosmos as Geb, the god of the Earth, is spoken of as having laid an egg, or the Universe; or as the Egyptian god Ra, gestating in the Egg of the Universe.

THE ‘EASTER BUNNY’?

CONNECTING THE DOTS

OK! WHAT’S UP? HOW DO EASTER EGGS AND BUNNY RABBITS FIT IN WITH JESUS? Its a party, a family affair. But - who invited the rabbit with the spaced out eggs? What does it all mean? WHEN YOU ENJOY YOUR CHOCOLATE EGG (OR BUNNY!) THIS YEAR, YOU WILL NOT REALIZE THAT THE ASSOCIATION OF EGGS AND RABBIT WITH EASTER, PREDATES THE CHRISTIAN OBSERVANCE BY MANY MILLENNIA.

Easter was a universal festival where the ancients celebrated the Vernal Equinox (which falls between 19 to 21 March each year in our calendar) as the renewal of Nature. The Church later set their celebration on the first Sunday after the first full moon after

THE VERNAL EQUINOX.

6

This time was chosen to discourage the Pagan festivities that also took place at this time of the year. These were festivals, during which coloured eggs were exchanged in tribute to the Scandinavian goddess Eostre, or Ostara, which is where we get our word ‘Easter’ from. Easter is determined by the first full moon and can be considered a lunar festival, and thus connects it with the egg and the hare, both which are pre-eminently lunar emblems.

THE “EASTER EGG”

The egg was revered on account of its form and its hidden mystery. The

development within the closed shell, without any outward interference, from nothing produced something, to emerge as an apparently self-generated

The name Easter comes to us from the Saxon Eostre, who was ultimately derived from the Egyptian Isis, and were both associated with the moon. The pre-eminent emblem of the moon among the ancients was the hare. The hare is a nocturnal animal. Its gestation period is exactly one and one half lunar cycles, (42 days), and they keep high reproduction numbers! Thus the hare became associated with the moon and its phases—and as the ‘opener’ of the new year at Easter—a symbol of fertility and the resurrection of life after the ‘death’ of winter .

FOOD & NUTRITION

THE POWER OF PURPLE FOODS Small additions to your diet can pay off big; know your health is your wealth MOST CHILDREN, ADOLESCENTS, AND ADULTS ARE NOT GETTING ENOUGH FRUIT IN THEIR DIETS—PARTICULARLY PURPLE FRUIT.

Eating purple/blue foods, such as Concord grapes and Concord grape products, as part of a nutritious diet and active lifestyle, can be an important ingredient for maintaining a healthy heart. Eating purple/blue foods

will help you get more of the nutrients you need each day and have overall healthier diets. People who eat purple/ blue fruits and vegetables have higher intakes of fiber, vitamin C, and potassium and significantly lower intakes of added sugars, and lower risk of metabolic syndrome—which can lead to diabetes and heart disease.

SPIRITUAL ELEVATION

TIPS TO RAISING YOUR VIBRATION Meditate for 20 minutes a day typically before you go to bed. Breathe in deeply for 5 seconds and exhale deeply for 5 seconds. Focus on one thought in order to clear out the noise. Light an incense or candle of lavender, frankincense or myrrh. Lastly, sit and contemplate your thoughts and repeat this cycle the next day. Become conscious of your thoughts. Everything you think, say or feel becomes your reality. Meditation, a healthy diet, and pure-positive thoughts are key to spiritual elevation.

MAKING HISTORY

BLACK MEN IN WHITE COATS A campaign aimed at increasing the number of Black males who pursue careers as doctors in the medical field. IT’S NO SECRET; THERE IS A DEFICIT OF BLACK MALES GOING INTO MEDICINE.

Black Men in White Coats intends change that narrative through exposure, inspiration, and mentoring young black males. We need physicians that come from our communities, in hopes that they will come back and practice medicine in our community. Our children need to see Black men who are doctors. Black male doctors are examples to those coming behind them.

LACK OF VISIBILITY AND EXPOSURE

The reason there are so few African American men in medicine is because we just don’t see ourselves in the field. Dr. Olawale Amubieya; a BMIWC member states that he planned to be a physician since about age five and that’s because

8

{ his father was and still a primary care physician in Detroit. He didn’t see becoming a doctor as unattainable. His uncle was a pediatrician. He just saw it as something his dad did for a living. To him; it was the norm. BMIWC members hope the campaign will help to alleviate the fears and belief systems that keep our boys from pursuing a career as a doctor.

SEEING IS BELIEVING

If you don’t see your dream, it’s hard for you to imagine it. As young people you don’t

realize, that doctors are just people. If you put your mind to it; you are every bit as capable as the guy next to you. BMIWC members encourage Black males to actively pursue their dreams and to keep in mind that there is plenty of help along the way. There are people all over the country who are itching to help you. Search online, go to your local hospital and ask if there’s anyone you can shadow.

TARUS

THE BULL IS BACK! April is here with the first element of Earth in the zodiac. According to the book, Light of Egypt volume II it states, “When intelligence first manifests itself form is a matter of necessity, and, as no form can possibly exist without matter, so Taurus is the first emanation of matter in its most etherealized state. Hence it is feminine, Venus the ruler thereof, and it represents the first pure form of the human soul, as it existed in its bright paradise within the angelic spheres of its parents, and reveals to us the first surprise of intelligence in embryo, the first sensation of consciousness, so to say--conscious of its Divine selfhood.”

HOLISTIC HEALTH

CANNABIDIOL: HELP COPING WITH ILLNESS

{

All things are made perfect by the Creator, there are no exceptions?

O

ne of the major things created were plants for medicinal use and nourishment which one cannot deny. CBD oil (Cannabidiol) derives from cannabis and contains therapeutic properties. CBD oil is commonly known to aid with conditions from chronic pain, seizures, psychosis and much more. According to the Recovery

Village research, “CBD, which is often used in therapeutic and medical contexts, comes from the hemp part of the cannabis sativa plant, as does marijuana, but though they are both processed from the same component of the plant, CBD and marijuana are thought to be very different. For example, in the past marijuana farmers have tended to breed their hemp plants to have

high amounts of THC because of the effects that component has to the user, but when people are farming hemp to get CBD oil, they don’t try to make it higher in THC.” In conclusion, we see an increase in the amount of states using cannabis medicinally and recreationally as health insurance creates

a larger burden on the peoples’ pocket’s. Restructuring the current medical system will enhance future medicines to provide cures.
