HOTEP, SPRING IS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER. We are just getting through one of the coldest winters in H-Town and I’m sure everyone is ready for things to heat up a bit. Well, here at Hotepmag we plan to get the “New Year” March 21st in motion. Health and wellness should be at the top of everyone’s list for improving their lifestyle in the 21st century. Obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes continue to be a staple in the melenated communities, while the western medical facilities collect billions from our peo-

ple. Imagine the benefit to our financial situation if we use common sense in controlling our own diets. As a result, those billions of dollars could build better schools, improve technology, increase homegrown products and create a health and wellness center for the people. Grow your own food, read your labels in grocery stores and become vigilant in deciding what you will put into your mouth. The saying goes, “You are what you eat!” So, if you are a pig eater, don’t expect to look like a volleyball athlete or pro-football player. Therefore,

get rid of the excuses by setting realistic goals and strive for perfection. I heard a gentleman once say in college, “Excuses are monuments of nothingness, they build bridges to nowhere and those of us who use these tools of incompetence are masters of nothingness.” At that point, I didn’t understand because I was young and busy with party life but now those words are clear as mud in today’s society. So, ask yourself, “What will I do in 2018 to increase my overall health? -ASE

SACRED SCARAB

Popular interpretation of the hieroglyphic image of the beetle translates as “to come into being” or “to transform”. The sacred scarab beetle is linked to Khepri, the god of the rising sun. Moreover, the dung ball rolled by a dung beetle resembles the sun. The race of beetles has no female, but all the males eject their sperm into a round pellet of material which they roll up by pushing it from the opposite side just as the sun seems to turn the heavens in the direction opposite to its own course, which is from west to east. The supposed self-creation of the beetle

resembles that of Khepri, who creates himself out of nothing. The ancient Egyptians believed that Khepri renewed the sun every day before rolling it above the horizon, then carried it through the other world after sunset, only to renew it, again, the next day. The astronomical ceiling in the tomb of Ramses VI portrays the nightly “death” and “rebirth” of the sun as being swallowed by Nut, goddess of the sky, and re-emerging from her womb as Khepri. The image of the scarab, conveys ideas of trans-

formation, renewal, and resurrection. Excavations of ancient Egyptian sites have yielded images of the scarab in bone, ivory, stone, and precious metals, dating from the Sixth Dynasty and up to the period of Roman rule.

THE PROBLEM WITH BLACK PANTHER We you there? Did you see all of our brothers and sisters representing for the culture? It was all over facebook like a Holly-hood movie premier. Where was all this support for the Birth of a Nation movie premier? A true story?! But back to my point... GETTING IN SHAPE With so many reasons not to workout; here are a few ways to get on track. IT TAKES 21 DAYS TO DEVELOP A HABIT.

Diligently plan out the next 3 weeks, incorporate at least 30 minutes of exercise into your daily regimen for 3-4 times a week. Make having an active life intentional. Put it on the same level as having lunch or getting sleep. As you work-out, it will soon become a non-negotiable, similar to eating and sleeping.

If the gym is too crowded or your shy, there are unlimited in-home regimens that you can follow on YouTube or your favorite social media fitness professionals. Fitness is doing more movement than you did the day before. Lunch break walks, morning workout routines, and bike rides all support your desire to have an active (and private) lifestyle.

a no-nonsense approach to breaking childish, “mean-girl” barriers

Girl Power 101 addresses the social issues that WOC (Women of Color) as a group have yet to move past which keeps us from achieving greatness.

Getting the body you desire requires a lifestyle change. Oftentimes we believe workouts are enough, but eating and sleeping are also main components for healthy living. Fat is burned during your body’s recovery stage and muscle building process. As you work out, obtain 6-8 hours of sleep to maximize gains. A high protein-low carb diet is key.

WE HAVE TO BREAK OUR TRADITIONAL MINDSETS OF CONSUMING 3 MEALS A DAY AND GET ACCUSTOMED TO EATING 6 TIMES A DAY.

Eating 6 times includes 3 meals along with 3 snacks, which can also include smoothies and shakes. Find an accountability partner. Identify a workout

partner. If you can’t find one, write a contract with yourself. Sign your contract and hang it somewhere so you can see it everyday. Knowing you have a commitment to yourself or your partner will help you form healthy, weight-loss habits. Everyone loves a good reflection in the mirror. Everyone wants to add years to their life and working out does just that. You have to ask yourself every day, “does my lifestyle add years to my life or subtract them?” Medications and hospital bills can become very expensive so prevention is the focus.

ARIES FIRST SIGN IN THE ZODIAC

This constellation represents the first Divine idea, the “word” of the Kabbalist, and the first active manifestation of the glorious En Soph. In other words, it is MIND IN ACTION, the first pulsation of Deity in the dual aspects of “Lord and Creator.” The first action of pure intelligence brought forth the first expression of form, and led to the

sacrifice of its angelic state, and, having gained the victory over the lower realms of matter, once more the spring time of a new life, with the promise of life, light and love. STAY WOKE

DYING OF THIRST Most of us grew up on this stuff. As if diabetes wasn’t enough, sugary drinks now linked infertility Boston University researchers surveyed nearly 4,000 women and 1,000 of their male partners, looking at the individualTs medical history, lifestyle factors and diet. The data determined that drinking soda can be linked to a reduction in the monthly average probability of conception. Monthly probability of successful conception with their partner dropped 25 percent in women and 33 percent in men who drank at least one soda per day. The study also links drinking

soda to early menstruation and poor semen quality. Given the amount of sugary drinks consumed by our community, these findings have important implications. If a couple is trying to get pregnant, they may want to try cutting back on soda. Unfortunately, African American women experience all types of pregnancy loss more often than do white women—not only miscarriage but also stillbirth, early birth, and even infant death.
