HOTEP,

Turn growing greens into lifestyle stability. African and Indigenous people of the Americas have an historic affinity toward agriculture.

H

ome gardening is at an all-time high in America today. In fact, in the United States, 8 out of 10 households take part in some sort of home gardening activity. As a result, more and more African Americans are taking interest in their health and also growing their own organic food – that is, food without pesticides, chemicals and other harmful toxins. Many are growing their own organic food in their backyards or even on their balconies, and the black commu-

nity especially seems to take interest in growing their own herbs and vegetables!

WHY BLACK PEOPLE IN PARTICULAR NEED TO EAT ORGANIC FOOD In the African American community, diabetes, heart disease and cancer continue to claim the lives of thousands of people every year – more than any other ethnic group in the United States. All three of these deadly health conditions have been linked to poor diet and lack of exercise, and many health problems have

specifically been linked to the presence of not just pesticides and chemicals in the food we eat, but also hormones, anti-biotics, and harmful products like high fructose corn syrup. This information alone is a great reason why more African Americans should take interest in growing and eating more organic foods!

ANCESTORY

ISHTAR: LOVE AND WAR Lets take a look deeper into the deity Ishtar; known as the godess of love, fertility, war, sex and power.

Ishtar was an important deity in Mesopotamian religion which was extant from c.3500 BCE, until its gradual decline between the 1st and 5th centuries CE with the spread of Christianity.

THE STAR OF ISHTAR

Besides the lions on her gate, her symbol is an eight-pointed star. In the Babylonian pantheon, she

“was the divine personification of the planet Venus”. Ishtar symbolizes love,

including that between human and animals, its power, and its danger.

She was particularly worshipped in the Upper Mesopotamian kingdom of Assyria (modern northern Iraq, north east Syria and south east Turkey), and also in the south Mesopotamian city of Uruk.

ISHTARS FATAL LOVE

Ishtar had many lovers; however, it is said, “Woe to him whom Ishtar had honoured! The fickle goddess treated her passing lovers cruelly. Animals, enslaved by love, lost their native vigour: they fell into traps laid by men or were domesticated. Even for the gods Ishtar’s love was fatal.

round the month of April there is a time that is a symbolic celebration of Jesus Christ’s resurrection where he dies on the cross Friday and then resurrects within two days to return in the flesh. BLACK ECONOMICS

THE REALITY OF ECONOMIC PREPAREDNESS When will we get the picture? We have several examples throughout history - coop economics is the only way!

What a timely subject for us to tackle in this day and time of “Trumpism” in which we live in under in modern America. For aeons of time economics has always been a practice on our planet. It was a common practice without a name, from the first realization of life, and the first act of creation of man and woman economic was there and it was known as “trade.” Trade in modern terminology means “transfer of ownership of goods and services from one person

10

or entity to another.”

How can there be any trade amongst a people with no economic cooperation amongst themselves? We have to ask serious questions amongst ourselves today, because in the black community, there have been periods of

“economic spurts” predominately amongst us. As history has shown us, after slavery 60 known black townships grew as a result of freedom from the plantation. Then Recon-

struction, Jim Crow, and Integration were used to destroy the black community’s economic push for financial equality amongst ourselves, and like sheep we reluctantly move by the staff of the sheepherder and his dog! How can a people become “economically prepared” when trade amongst them is non-existent and they open themselves up to business people that don’t look like them who maraud the community with their products and services and refuse to give to the community in reciprocation? It should be clear to us all by now “until black people buy and trade amongst their own people there can be no real push to be economically prepared to move forward as a people.” We must stop the economic bleeding with in our community and the way you do this is to start spending and trading amongst ourselves…Period. There is no way around it!

1 PLANNING Take time out to plan a small garden in your yard or on your patio. Be sure to choose an area that gets lots of sunlight and fresh air. These are necessary for a successful harvest.

2 PREPARING With a little youtubing and asking around; anyone can start a garden. Be sure to get all the nutrients and soil for the entire grow season. The worst thing is running out of anything at a critical time in your grow.

ate your own. As a result, let’s review some quick techniques that will help you grow your own food from a natural seed.

FOLLOW THESE 10 STEPS TO HELP YOU ENJOY THE BOUNTY OF A PRODUCTIVE VEGETABLE GARDEN:

1. Choose locally adapted varieties. Not all vegetable varieties grow well in all areas. Ask your local nursery or cooperative extension office which varieties are best for where you live. There may be varieties that resist diseases specific to your area, or that produce better crops under your climate conditions. 2. Plant at the right time of year. Seed packets generally state the proper time to plant. In some areas planting windows are very narrow and you must hit them fairly precisely for a bountiful harvest. In other areas, you can plant several times over the summer and maintain a longer harvest season. Your local nursery or cooperative ex-

I WILL / I AM WRITTEN BY J. Alexander Harris

S I here by decree that I will not succumb to the pressures of this world. I will no longer accept what is given, for what is given is not sincerity of Life. Up to now everything given has been for Life robbing motives and intentions. Meant to bring from life to death. My demise being a priority. Know that your strength is waning, your determination is wavering and your focus blurred. But, my life is gaining, my rise is coming and the conquerors heart is beating. My walls are falling, my shackles are breaking. My hindrances lie in me. No one can stop what is in motion, for He (God) has ordained what is coming forth out of me. All things that you have given for my demise you can keep. What you have for me is not for me, because it did come from him. I denounce settling, giving up and focusing on anything other than my Rise. For he (God) will sustain me, propel me and lift me to a station of success I don’t have time for stop signs or stop lights I have to push beyond what you see in me; I have push beyond what I see in me I have to push through the limits of my fear, living above all that would hold me down The task must be completed for my life to flourish and bloom And when the task is done, I must push to a new task, for there are many more fears to defeat. My desire is to be better than I am My drive is to be better than you think I can be My focus is to better than I believe I can be To live I have to obtain the ultimate enlightenment; My enlightenment Therefore I Decree I am Living I am Rising I am Conquering!

tension office is the best source for local planting dates. 3. Prepare the soil properly before planting. Work in generous amounts of organic matter such as compost or composted manure. If you don’t use composted manure, which already contains nitrogen, also work in a complete fertilizer.

16

4. Plant properly. Sow seed at the proper depth and space, following directions on seed packets. Vegetables planted too closely together will produce poorly. If you’re planting transplants, take care not to set them too deeply or the stems may rot – use your trowel to dig a hole just deep enough so

that the top of the root ball is level with the surface of the ground. 5. Water consistently. Maintain even soil moisture so plants do not dry out, but don’t over-water. Water deeply, then give the soil time to dry partially before watering again. Inconsistent watering will reduce yields in

q most vegetables, and make others – like cucumbers and lettuce – taste bitter. Installing a drip irrigation system connected to an automatic timer is your best bet. 6. Fertilize regularly. Maintaining vigorous growth is very important with almost all vegetables. Most should be fed with a nitrogen fertilizer at least every 4 to 6 weeks. However, be careful not to over-fertilize, which can cause some vegetables, especially tomatoes, to produce less. 7. Mulch. A 2- to 3-inch layer of organic matter applied over the roots of your vegetable plants will cool the soil, reduce weeds, and help prevent soil moisture fluctuations that ruin quality. 8. Eliminate weeds. Weeds

compete with vegetables for water, nutrients and sunlight, thus reducing yields. Pull weeds by hand and cultivate the soil frequently to keep them to a minimum. 9. Harvest often. Many vegetables, especially beans, squash, peppers and cucumbers, will stop producing if not harvested frequently. Pick every few days.

If you can’t eat all you gather, share with friends or neighbors. 10. Control insect pests. Many insects enjoy fresh vegetables as much as you do. Always keep an eye open for insect damage, and protect your plants with a solution labeled for use on vegetables.

q BLACK FARMERS COLLECTIVE INDIEGOGO Here is the perfect example of the power of unity. As a people united; anything is possible. Here is a group of black farmers who have banned together to create produce and economic gain for their community. Watch Video
