editorial THE CROWN PRINCESS IN HOTEL MAGAZINE! KRONPRINSESSEN I HOTEL MAGAZINE! Bedste hilsner Peter Mygind Hotel Manager Nimb Hotel

Since becoming a member of the Danish Royal Family in 2004, Tasmanianborn Crown Princess Mary has won the hearts of the Danes with her unique ability to embrace Danish culture – a journey she has on several occasions called both inspiring and overwhelming. One memorable moment was when, at her first official occasion prior to her wedding with Crown Prince Frederik, she wore the late Queen Ingrid’s priceless and historic ruby parure at a gala banquet at Christiansborg Palace. Now the story of the Crown Princess and the royal jewels has been portrayed in a new book, and in this issue of Hotel Magazine we feature unique images of Denmark’s Crown Princess wearing the royal ruby parure. This edition also features a number of entirely new jewellery designs created for the Royal Danish Ballet. Seventeen Danish jewellery designers have devised a bespoke collection for the royal dancers for their staging of La Bayadère at the Royal Danish Theatre’s Old Stage. Exhibited in the foyers for theatregoers to enjoy during intermissions, the jewels will also be worn as costume pieces by the principal stars of the famous ballet love triangle between William, a British lieutenant, Emma, a vice consul’s daughter, and Nikiya, a temple dancer. Readers will also enjoy a series of interior photos inspired by great international artists such as Henri Matisse. And we take an energised look at the American carmaker Tesla and their latest electric car, which sets new standards for sustainable motoring. We open the issue with a concierge guide featuring information on the arts, theatre and music offered at venues nationwide. And we close with a guide to some of Copenhagen’s leading galleries. Happy reading! Kind regards,   Peter Mygind Hotel Manager Nimb Hotel

Men eftertidens dom over kunstnerens store produktion har været hård.

Carl Heinrich Bloch, Self-portrait.

ØREGAARD MUSEUM Carl Bloch – Revered and Ridiculed Until 27 January 2013   Few artists have experienced as mercurial a fate as Danish painter Carl Bloch (1834 – 1890). In his own time he was hailed as a master, and his ambitious historical paintings garnered widespread recognition both at home and abroad. But time was not kind to either his prolific artistic output or to his critical reputation. New generations of artists and art historians dismissed him as mawkish and old-fashioned.

Now, the Øregaard Museum exhibition Carl Bloch - Revered and Ridiculed provides modern audiences with the chance to experience Bloch and to discover the story of his art and his destiny. Berthe Morisot, Eugene Manet and His Daughter in the Garden, 1883.

Eckersberg (1783-1853) lavede i 1818.

The Hirschsprung Collection features two large portraits painted by Danish painter Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg around the time of his appointment as a professor at Copenhagen’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts in 1818. His subjects were East India merchant Schmidt and his wife – but who were they? How did they make their fortune? And why are the portraits so grandiose in size compared to other portraits from the same period? The exhibition relates the story of Mr and Mrs Schmidt and offers the visitor a glimpse of Copenhagen and its bourgeoisie of 1818.

Humorous, harsh recollection of the author’s childhood and upbringing in the commune culture of the 1970s. Renowned Danish director Thomas Vinterberg’s play Kollektivet is based on his own life as a child in a commune, where he experienced his parents’ divorce. It is the mid-1970s. Erik has inherited a house from his father and decides, along with his girlfriend Anna and in the spirit of the age, to start a commune. The commune is sorely tested when Erik begins a relationship with a young girl named Emma and has the temerity to insist that she is moving in – without Anna needing to move out.

In the attic of the Ekdal home, among the hens and rabbits, lives an injured wild duck. The bird, who is getting fatter by the day, is the family’s pride and joy and is beloved by all, especially 14-yearold daughter Hedvig. She is drawn by her father Hjalmar and grandfather Gamle Ekdal into the fantasy world they have created in the attic. But the harsh realities of life suddenly intrude when Gregers Werle, son of the unscrupulous merchant Werle, returns home after a 15-year absence. Gregers tells Hjalmar that Hedvig is actually the daughter of Gregers’ father, and a tragic family drama takes shape with Hedvig at its centre. With his 1884 play The Wild Duck, renowned Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen questions the ever-present validity of truth. Performances are in Danish.

This version of La Bayadère is set in Victorian times in the late 1800s when India was a British colony. The story is one of a love triangle between a young British lieutenant, William; the daughter of a vice consul, Emma; and the temple dancer, Nikiya. William forsakes his bride (Emma) and bourgeois propriety to follow Nikiya into the Kingdom of the Shades.

William Shakespeares (1564-1616) legedariske kærlighedshistorie er let at følge; to forelskede unge fra to fjendtligsindede familier i Verona bliver ofre for forældrenes hadefulde strid.

Shakespeare’s story is one of two young lovers from Verona, who fall victim to vicious strife between their rival families. Romeo and Juliet unleashes the passions of love before death finally puts an end to boundless happiness. Romeo and Juliet is a ballet suitable for all audiences – for those who are new to the art as well as more experienced balletgoers.

For a number of years, ARoS has pursued a project to present an extensive and highly distinguished Edvard Munch exhibition in Denmark. The efforts have finally succeeded with the autumn exhibition entitled EDVARD MUNCH - angst/anxiety that will encompass a large number of different Munch works, including major works such as Evening on Karl Johan and Woman in Three Stages. The exhibition marks the first time that the world-famous Rasmus Meyers Collection in Bergen is showcased in its entirety outside Norway. EDVARD MUNCH - angst/anxiety aims to relate how the concept of anxiety was a driving force in Edvard Munch’s art and life. In a number of thematic and partly chronological rooms, visitors will experience how anxiety was a lifelong latent component in the Norwegian artist’s many depictions of modern, alienated human existence: anxiety over life, anxiety over love and anxiety over death.

her royal highness crown princess mary of denmark by theresa valbæk

hendes kongelige højhed kronprinsesse mary af danmark

Crown Princess Mary has proved herself to be a worthy and popular representative of Denmark and the Danes. Her dedicated social commitment to disadvantaged children and youth through The Mary Foundation and her great sporting interest have often made her front-page news, such as recently when, wearing swimming goggles and a wetsuit, she swam through the canals of Copenhagen in her capacity as patron of the Danish Swimming Federation.

Her mother, Henrietta Donaldson, was an Executive Secretary at the University of Tasmania, but passed away in 1997. Her father has since married British author Susan Donaldson.

Crown Princess Mary holds a Bachelor degree in Commerce and Law from the University of Tasmania and worked in senior positions at various international consultancy agencies before meeting Crown Prince Frederik. She moved to Denmark in 2002. The grand royal wedding between Crown Princess Mary and Crown Prince Frederik was held on 14 May 2004 at Copenhagen Cathedral, followed by a wedding gala at Fredensborg Palace. Hundreds of thousands of Danes lined the streets of Copenhagen to get a glimpse of the young couple, and the live TV transmission was watched by more than 2.2 million viewers, almost half of the Danish population. Today, the Crown Prince Couple has four children: Prince Christian aged 7, Princess Isabella aged 5 and twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine, who are 2 years old. The family resides in the newly renovated Frederik VIII wing of the Amalienborg Palace in central Copenhagen.

romance and rubies by nina hald

romancen og rubinerne

The woman in red, the queen of hearts, enters the Royal Danish Theatre wearing a 200-year-old ruby parure as she passes beneath a garland of two intertwined hearts made of roses. The stage is set: let the fairytale begin. Beauty, elegance and dreams – this is what defines the jewellery of a princess. The pleasure, fascination and enchantment that reside in the jewels sparks our dreams about the very life that she leads. To admire Denmark’s Crown Princess Mary in her royal regalia is all about imagining what is must be like to be invited to a palace ball. Add to this the fact that we do not just remember with our heads, but also our hearts, and the ruby parure’s red and white sparkle is deeply emblazoned on the collective consciousness of many Danes.

yearning for beauty In a new book entitled Fairytale rubies: The 200-year history and evolution of the ruby parure (available in Danish only), the ever-evolving story of the Danish royal family’s sumptuous and one-of-a-kind ruby parure is told from a variety of perspectives. But of paramount importance is its latest incarnation – the parure has been restored and altered by the Marianne Dulong workshop in a process that began in 2010 and which can be seen in a series of evocative photographs in the book. Even though the royal jewellery will probably continue to undergo change, we can easily recognise the various elements of the ruby parure regardless of their formation. The ancient, traditional craftsmanship has served to rejuvenate our cultural and historical memories. Furthermore, the book also reveals the origins of the hitherto unfamiliar pieces that comprise the ruby parure. In addition to the primary components of the ruby parure – that is, the rubies and diamonds themselves – the book also covers the cultural history of the colour red, since the ruby parure’s very prestige is defined by and named after its vibrant red stones. The historical framework of the ruby parure is also of interest; the royal women who have worn the pieces, the journey of the parure as it has been passed down through the generations, and the reigning fashions in jewellery – both when the parure was created and later when it was altered.

122

the fairytale and the romance Most women can identify with the way in which jewellery can become ‘charged’ with emotion; inherited pieces can serve to remind us of one we have loved and lost. And so it was with Denmark’s late Queen Ingrid. She received the ruby parure in 1935 when she was a Swedish princess on the eve of her wedding to Danish Crown Prince Frederik (later King Frederik IX). During her years on the throne, Queen Ingrid had ample opportunity to delve deep into the Danish crown jewels, but as Dowager Queen she wore only jewels from her own private collection – including the ruby parure. It is the piece most closely associated with Dowager Queen Ingrid, as she spent nearly the last 30 years of her life as a widow after the death of King Frederik IX.

HOTEL MAGAZINE NO. 23

Jewellery can also play a role in shaping our identity. This was very much the case with the ‘commoner’ Mary Donaldson from Tasmania. For approximately four years – between the death of Dowager Queen Ingrid in 2000 and the official entrance of Mary Donaldson into the royal family in 2004 – the ruby parure was nowhere to be seen. In the days and evenings leading up to the royal wedding, Frederik and Mary took part in one event after another, and wearing a gown of silver brocade at the official dinner at Christiansborg Palace and one of red silk at a gala performance at the Royal Danish Theatre, we watched Mary Donaldson become the Crown Princess when we saw her arrayed in the historical ruby parure. When Mary Donaldson mingled with the public for the first time at the Royal Danish Theatre, she was attired in red from head to toe – from her handmade red shoes to the ruby parure as her crowning glory. Today, Crown Princess Mary has both the honour and the pleasure of wearing the ruby parure, thus making her the most recent addition to an illustrious 200-year-long fairytale.

MORPHE by Amit Aggarwal, Spring Summer 2011.

a rich tradition of craftsmanship The exhibition takes its starting point in the craftsmanlike refinement that has always characterised Indian fashion. The pieces on display are the products of a unique understanding of textiles and techniques fundamental to the self-perception of Indian designers. Even during politician and civil rights leader Mahatma Gandhi’s (1869-1948) rebellion against British colonialism, craftsmanship was very much in focus. Gandhi believed that all Indians should spin and weave their own materials, a handmade cloth known as khadi. For Gandhi, khadi symbolised independence from the British, because khadi is handmade by the individual and the British stood for industrialisation. For centuries, Indians have been known worldwide for their craftsmanship, and India has always played a pivotal role in the fashion industry as a supplier of exquisite textiles, top-notch expertise and cheap, abundant labour. When the great Parisian fashion houses need embroidery or beading for their creations, they send them to India, where the standards of perfection are very high indeed.

142

In the wake of Indian independence in 1947, Indian society was seized with a desire to rediscover, reconstruct and redefine the national identity. In terms of fashion this meant that India wasn’t particularly interested in trends or directions taking place in the world beyond its borders. Instead, designers looked inward and found inspiration in the many peoples of India, its regions and the rich history that characterises this ancient country. Indian fashion appealed mainly to the Indians themselves. But it is a very different story today. The seven designers featured in this exhibition thus mark a significant change in Indian fashion history. The designers experiment with the traditional Indian clothing culture and challenge received wisdom on what is considered ‘Indian’. They create pieces that bear witness to intense exchange and dialogue with the world around them, elegantly creating a bridge between the local and the global; between what was then, and what is now. The garments encompass a spectrum of elements, materials and techniques associated with the traditional Indian clothing culture, but they also form part of a striking new direction that changes the understanding of what Indian fashion is, and what it can be.

the exhibition The exhibition is comprised of 55 stunning stories of garments showcased in a way that is both sumptuous and utterly comprehensive. Most of the garments are showpieces created by the designers to be worn just once on the catwalk, and are therefore highly experimental from both a visual and a conceptual standpoint.

de syv designere LITTLE SHILPA Little Shilpa bliver kaldt “De små tings gud”. Morphe by AMIT AGGARWAL Amit Aggarwal lancerede mærket Morphe i 2008.

Little Shilpa’s pieces transform a human into living sculpture. Her imaginative, playful and theatrical universe appeals to pop stars such as Lady Gaga, who has allowed herself to be transformed on several occasions by Little Shilpa. Every piece is hand sewn and possesses a unique treasure trove of detail. Aggarwal’s pairing of steel and hand sewn fine textiles such as transparent silk and chiffon lend his garments a quality that make them both sculptural and almost alive. PRASHANT VERMA Prashant Verma began his fashion career at age 18 in the house of British designer Alexander McQueen, where he worked with print and embroidery. In 2006, he launched his own label, PRASHANT, which is known for its innovative embroidery, grand and dramatic digital prints, and unusual material combinations.

SABYASACHI MUKHERJEE Sabyasachi Mukherjee is known in India as an innovator of traditional Indian garments such as the sari. He also creates garments whose look and tailoring is much more globally orientated. Mukherjee describes his own collections as “international styling with an Indian soul.” He takes his inspiration from the vibrant street life of Kolkata, the desert, and from antique textiles. VARUN SARDANA Varun Sardana is an individualist in the Indian fashion industry, which often employs a great deal of colour and embellishment. The collections are either black or white and feature no distracting elements. Understated classic looks are given updated tailoring and shape. Sardana’s pieces challenge ingrained ideas about beauty. His designs play with the natural curves of the body to create innovative new silhouettes. MANISH ARORA From the beginning of his career in the late 1990s, Manish Arora has been known for his colourful, spectacular and humorous design that straddles the border of kitsch. His signature material is the sequin, which he uses in untold quantities to create patterns on his garments. His designs have been worn by pop royalty ranging from Rihanna and Lady Gaga to M.I.A. and Katy Perry, as well as by the Danish pop star Oh Land. 11.11 by Cell DSGN Cell DSGN is a design cooperative established in 2003 by Shani Himanshu and Smita Singh Rathore. Their approach to design is utterly holistic – fashion is not imposed from without, but is rather a part of how we live our lives. The designs, which evoke associations of hospitals and mental institutions, express the combination of an abundance of detail with a strong stamp of deconstructivism.

strength & beauty – royal ballet jewellery by nina hald

styrke & skønhed – kongelige balletsmykker

In the world of ballet, jewellery is a ‘tool’ that is often overlooked, but all that’s changed with the new exhibition entitled Strength & Beauty – royal ballet jewellery. Seventeen Danish jewellery designers showcase their creations at this unique special exhibition that can be experienced in the halls of that elegant epicentre of ballet, the Old Stage at the Royal Danish Theatre on Kongens Nytorv in Copenhagen. The pieces were created for the classic ballet La Bayadère, which will be performed by the Royal Danish Ballet at the Old Stage in November 2012 and again in March 2013. The jewellery must compliment the strength and beauty inherent in ballet as an art form – physical virtuosity and living art in the eternal search for grace and the perfect silhouette. When the lights go down we are invited into a fantastic universe where gravity is suspended and the world belongs to the ballet dancers – bejewelled to perfection. The exhibition is curated by author and jewellery expert Nina Hald in conjunction with goldsmith Bodil Binner, dancer Louise Østergaard and the Royal Danish Ballet.

Nytorv i København.

trille folkvardsen for p. hertz Gemmologist and jewellery designer Trille Folkvardsen has found inspiration for her jewellery for the six temple dancers in older illustrations sourced from jeweller P. Hertz’s 178-year-old archives. The seashell motif reflects a romantic fascination with Eastern splendour and Oriental sensuality. And in the eyes of the designer, the golden yellow citrines, tucked away in the company’s stone storage for the last 80-100 years, were perfect for the temple dancers’ Indian-inspired jewellery. In Asia, the colour yellow symbolises serenity, intelligence and prudence, and in colour play with the specially cut blue topazes, the jewellery emphasises elegance and dignity coupled with temperament and sensuality.

marianne eriksen scott-hansen for klarlund In her pieces created for the temple dancer Nikiya in La Bayadère, designer Marianne Eriksen Scott-Hansen has taken inspiration from the world of flowers, which play an ambiguous role for Nikiya. The flower basket she receives from her rival contains a hidden danger, ultimately causing her death. Marianne Eriksen Scott-Hansen’s flower is a combination of two religious symbols: the lotus blossom and the holly leaf. The flowers have been crafted to reflect Nikiya’s own passionate ‘crown of thorns’ that implies love, life, and death. The drop-shaped cultured pearls are meant to resemble the traditional Indian decorations, the bindi, which are placed on the brow and the forehead. The shape evokes the legend of how pearls are created, as dew droplets fallen on an oyster, while also bearing reference to Nikiya who must pay with blood, sweat and tears for her love.

HOTEL MAGAZINE NO. 23

charlotte lynggaard, ole lynggaard copenhagen Charlotte Lynggaard has allowed herself to be inspired by the spirit and atmosphere of La Bayadère, by India’s thousands of years of tradition in the ways that princes, princesses, maharajahs and maharanis wore their jewellery, by the heat and colours of India, which are represented by gold and golden tones, and finally, by the collar-shaped neck jewellery of the Victorian era. With an uncompromising approach that permits nothing less than perfection, Charlotte Lynggaard has once again designed jewellery with a look that is luxuriously enchanted.

lone rønnow frandsen & lisbeth enø larsen, pandora The ancient and time-consuming method of macramé is today used in the manufacturing of very artistic and delicate jewellery, including Pandora’s collection of macramé bracelets. Charms and clips are also very much a part of the Pandora universe. Indeed, the light sphere pattern surrounding the pink sapphires is a motif used with many Pandora pieces, which is why it felt natural to employ for design duo Lone Rønnow Frandsen & Lisbeth Enø Larsen. In symphony, these enchanted designs reflect the magical Indian universe of La Bayadère.

Join a test drive of Tesla’s new electric super sedan – an experience that rekindles our imagination and gives new hope for the future

The speed of a spaceship, the performance of a supercar and the hushed comfort of a limousine – that’s what we as starry-eyed kids were led to expect when reading about the future of the automobile in our father’s crumpled car magazines. Over a quarter of a century later we are still banging around in cars that are all too similar to those that churned out fumes on the highways of our childhood. But now the future is finally here! Manifested in Tesla’s new electric super sedan Model S, the first car to deliver on our boyhood sci-fi hopes.

157

HOTEL MAGAZINE NO. 23

158

silent acceleration Before we get into details let’s dwell a little on the dream. The Model S feels alive. The car has no key, but rather an ergonomically designed mini Model S, a smooth pebble that fits comfortably in your jacket pocket. When approaching the car the pebble unlocks the doors and when you enter the driver’s seat the many digital screens light up to show that the vehicle is ready to run. The overwhelming first impression when you press down on the throttle and lean back in the seat is the sound, or rather the absence of it. The Model S is completely silent and picks up speed like a spacecraft heading to remote galaxies.

køreegenskaber i formel-klassen

supercar handling Thanks to a very low centre of gravity the car is almost sucked down to the road surface. The low-lying battery provides optimal weight distribution, while also making the sharp handling more reminiscent to that of a Formula One racing car than a limousine. The Model S has a fully automatic hydraulic suspension system that adapts to the driving style and speed to reduce wind resistance. This is a convincing feature but can also always be overruled manually if, for example, you want to raise or lower the car. The ventilated disc brakes are huge and slow the heavy car down as if it were a lightweight mini-car. And pushing on the brakes means that you’re left hanging in your harness until the car comes to a stop. The Model S comes in 3 different versions: Standard, Signature and Performance. The car we tested was the Performance version with adjustable suspension and an acceleration of 0-100 kph in just 4.4 seconds.

high-speed Internet But driving experience is about much more than great performance. The Model S offers a fundamentally different total experience that lingers in your soul long after the ride. Rather than sporting a centre console from which to control everything from entertainment to cabin temperature, the Model S features an impressive 17-inch touch screen. 17-inch! That’s almost double the longer width of an iPad. The screen is operated in exactly the same way, whether opening the panoramic roof, adjusting the temperature, listening to Spotify via the built-in high speed Internet, or navigating the planet using Google Earth via the touch screen. One nifty detail is that you can easily split the screen so you have navigation features at the top and control functions at the bottom. You can also drag the desired apps into the digital instrument display in front of the driver. So, for instance, route description is presented next to the speedometer. The system is incredibly intuitive and easy to operate and clearly shows that Tesla is a recognised Silicon Valley technology company.

oceans of space The Tesla Model S also sets new standards of spaciousness and comfort. There is no bulky internal combustion engine, gearbox or drive shaft. Space utilisation is optimal with luggage space both front and rear and with a cabin that feels generous in size. There are two seats at the front and a large rear seat with ample room for three burly men. And you can also add two extra seats at the back for children of up to 120cm in height.

quick charge Electric motors are extremely efficient but many electric vehicles are limited by how far they can drive on a single charge. Currently, most electric cars have a range of no more than 120-160km after which they need 4-8 hours to fully charge. The Model S can run 480km on one charge, and with Tesla’s quick-charging technology the process only takes about an hour. Most people charge their Model S in their home garage overnight or at work, and with a range of almost 500km very few people would need to recharge on the go for their daily commute.

Electric cars do not emit soot or other harmful particles that pollute the air we breathe and they are far more energy efficient than combustion engine vehicles. Power from wind turbines does not produce CO2 emissions that threaten climate change. Electric cars that run on wind energy are therefore also CO2 free. But even in a Danish context where electricity supply still to some extent relies on fossil fuel, electric cars have their merits. A Model S in Denmark has an indirect CO2 footprint of just 80 grams per kilometre, which is far less than a regular combustion engine vehicle. So the Model S really does restore our childhood hopes. It demonstrates that with the right technology we can enhance our quality of life, while also embracing a more sustainable lifestyle. Should your next car be powered by electricity?

Model S is expected to cost from DKK 500,000 and up. Follow us at www.teslamotors.com. 163

carl-henning pedersen the centennial

fantasiens maler fylder 100 år – carl-henning pedersen A leading figure within the European CoBrA movement, Carl-Henning Pedersen’s boundless imagination was inexhaustible. In 2013, the ARKEN Museum of Modern Art celebrates the centennial of the birth of this Danish legend with a major retrospective.

Carl-Henning Pedersen (1913-2007) was one of the brightest stars in modern Danish art. The exhibition at the ARKEN Museum of Modern Art invites visitors to explore Carl-Henning Pedersen’s colourful and sprawling world of imaginative birds, ships and stars – a magical universe in which the artist’s creative joy jumps off the canvas. The retrospective features a selection of the thousands of artworks CarlHenning Pedersen managed to paint over seven decades of his life before his death in 2007. Art was indeed integral to his life.

a young communist-turned-artist The story of Carl-Henning Pedersen’s life is a rags-to-riches tale, much like ‘The Ugly Duckling’ who to everyone’s surprise turns into a swan. CarlHenning Pedersen was raised in poverty in a working class home on the outskirts of Copenhagen and lost his mother at the tender age of ten. As a young man, Carl-Henning Pedersen became an active Communist, and in 1933 a party comrade suggested that he attend the International High School, a Danish leftist folk high school. Here he met his future wife, painter Else Alfelt (1910-1974). Else Alfelt introduced him to the visual arts, and CarlHenning Pedersen soon proved to be untapped talent bursting with energy. But while Else Alfelt was naturalistic in her idiom, Carl-Henning Pedersen was drawn to a more abstract style. He found his early inspiration in the works of artists such as Picasso (1881-1973) and Klee (1879-1940). In 1939, Carl-Henning Pedersen hitchhiked to Paris to experience a major exhibition of his artistic heroes. And while travelling home to Denmark through Nazi Germany he chanced upon the Entartete Kunst exhibition, which had been staged by Hitler to ridicule modern art. For Carl-Henning Pedersen this experience was seminal and he embraced modern art with even greater zeal.

168

birds of inspiration Carl-Henning Pedersen filled his canvases with colourful creatures, ships, stars, masks and suns. He drew inspiration from children’s drawings and African and Oceanic art. Indeed, his signature motif – the bird – derives from Oceanic art. Fantasy birds abound in Carl-Henning Pedersen’s paintings – large and small, loving and aggressive and always dressed in brightly coloured plumage. To Carl-Henning Pedersen, birds are symbols of the universal primordial force of inspiration. Birds have always flown freely through the air – they are free and nothing binds them.

in search of spontaneity In the years following WWII, Carl-Henning Pedersen also became known outside Denmark and he became affiliated with the international artist group CoBrA, which was founded in 1948 by the famous Danish painter Asger Jorn (1914-1973) and dissolved again in 1951. Through art the CoBrA movement sought to highlight spontaneity rather than reflection and intellectual awareness. Carl-Henning Pedersen saw himself as a kind of medium whose brushstrokes conjured up deep and mystical primordial beings and gave them shape on the blank canvas.

creative drive Carl-Henning Pedersen’s spontaneous method was driven by his immense creative energy. He felt a need to paint every day and he often painted on top of his old paintings time and time again. He viewed the creative urge as something essentially human and his drive guided him throughout life right until the very last years of his life. The retrospective at the ARKEN Museum of Modern Art includes paintings, drawings, mosaics, sculptures and poems spanning the entire oeuvre of the prolific artist and highlights an imaginative world that still fascinates and enchants.

The Carl-Henning Pedersen exhibition will open on 2 February 2013 at the ARKEN Museum of Modern Art south of Copenhagen. 171

Coco Electra is a prolific and sensitive artistic soul who brings order to her imaginative world. The atmosphere in her paintings is romantic, melancholic and remote – yet also intimately reflects the artist’s personal presence, drawing on hard-rock antics. Coco Electra loves Chinese ink drawings – their universe of beautiful birds and flowers, which create a sense of space on an otherwise plane void. Many young Chinese artists subscribe to the Pop Surrealist movement, complete with big-eyed Mangas and sharp-lined contours. Coco Electra’s career as a visual artist soon took shape after she made up her mind to pursue the arts. Her background as a freelance tattoo artist has given her all the right technical skills.

CECILIE WESTH Cecilie Westh’s works depict the human condition, the way we stage-manage our life and our underlying emotions. They portray the masks we put on and take off in our effort to fit in, masks that can be interchanged to reflect who or what we aspire to be. Her works are portrayals of the complexity of humankind, the beauty of imperfection, the quirky and the whimsical. Her characters lend themselves to the public eye with proportions that transcend accepted ideals of beauty. They live in their own world but engage in small, everyday challenges and situations, which are rendered with humour and poetry. Cecilie Westh’s work reflects a woman’s view of herself. She turns her thoughts inside out. For instance – are we humans for sale? Not necessarily for money, but we have sold our souls to society and to the things that are expected of us and to the role we have taken upon ourselves to fulfil – or for different reasons have adopted – in our yearning for the easy life. And so! What came first – the chicken or the egg, the hen, surrogate mother or the housewife? She plays with horns and wings, good and evil, with a battle that is to be fought, perhaps just in the kitchen or perhaps in our inner heart. She toys with global ideas, situations that many of us recognise from real life and with familiar setups that we perhaps see in ourselves.
