DEAR GUESTS AND FRIENDS When we think of how well 2020 began...... so many carefully-planned events, so many carefree wedding receptions at the CU Restaurant, convivial evenings of folk music at the Bären and events featuring specialities from various countries at the Park Hotel Restaurant. Unfortunately none of this was to be. In March the corona pandemic and the rapid rise in positive cases presented the world with a tremendous challenge, resulting in the lockdown. Our business was more or less wound down completely and we entered a Sleeping-Beauty-like sleep. After the first horror and shock we regained our strength, our slogan being; ‚We‘re coming back stronger than ever!‘ We are currently hoping that the events for autumn and winter 2020/2021 can go ahead as planned and, of course, that we will be able to welcome you at one of them at least. It goes without saying that we adhere to the corona regulations to the letter and have more than enough space for social distancing in our locations. Saffron is one of the most precious spices in the world. Its threadlike red stigmas – are quite literally the stuff of legend. But what is saffron, exactly? No matter how many tales have been told about this particular spice, most of us still don’t know what to do with it in the kitchen, nor can we tell whether it’s worth the price we paid for it. Burns Night celebrations are held all over the world, whether on the exact evening itself or a date as close as possible. Burns Supper is a traditional dinner celebrating the life and work of Robert Burns. He was born in January 1759 and died in July 1796. Mark Chesterfield of The Whisky Experience will guide you through the evening and present an exclusive selection of Scotch Single Malts.

On Thursday 12th November 2020 executive chef, Marcel Scheuner, will pair top notch champagne with one of his excellent dinners. The sparkling delights of Veuve Clicquot champagne and culinary delicacies are waiting for you. Clicquot was founded in 1772 by Philippe Clicquot and taken over by his daughterin-law Barbe-Nicole Clicquot Ponsardin in 1805 after the death of her husband, François. (‘Veuve’ in English means ‘widow’). While Europe battled to recover after the Napoleonic Wars, she succeeded in exporting her champagne to countries all over the world helped in no small measure by her staff, many of whom had come from Germany. She introduced her champagne into all the courts of Europe,
thereby spreading the French concept of ‘savoir-vivre’. After only a short time her champagne was not only a very successful product but had achieved the status of a myth. Our four-course Champagne Dinner features unique creations using the highest quality products. However, Veuve Clicquot’s champagne is the star of the show and Marcel Scheuner’s culinary delights have been created with that in mind. Fabio di Santo from Moet-Hennessy will guide you through the evening and tell you more about each of the specialities. The crowning glory will be a Tarte Tatin, fittingly served with Veuve Clicquot demi-sec.

This is the fourth time the CU Restaurant will also be celebrating the greatest bank holiday in Holland with you, your friends and the Dutch community. We are welcoming again the ‘Pulpieros’ from Galicia. Probably the most famous way of preparing octopus comes from Galicia in the north of Spain. At the ‘Fiesta del Pulpo’ the ‘Pulpieros do Carballiño’ cook the Galician dish of ‘Pulpo a feira’ for you in the timehonoured manner.

The octopus is cooked in a copper pan and then cut into pieces with scissors when lukewarm. It is then served on wooden boards with coarse grain salt, paprika and olive oil. The beer’s been served! One, two, three, down the hatch! Unfortunately, the world famous ‘Oktoberfest’ has been cancelled this year for reasons that are all too familiar. The ‘Metzgete’ at the Bären Restaurant is a traditional nose-to-tail feast held in autumn. Unsurprisingly, word spread after only a very short time. We are now celebrating our third ‘Metzgete’ as a celebration of farmers and butchers.
