THESIS 1 FALL 2011 10/17/11 UPLOAD FACULTY: JULIA WARGASKI
redesigning icu ’s
The goal of my thesis project is to redesign ‘intensive care units’ in local hospitals. This is because through my personal experience as a family member of multiple cancer patients; I am familiar with the environment in which a patient and their guests are to stay in. Hospital designs of intensive care units have changed a bit over the years to surround the patient in a controlled and sterile environment. However there have been studies that show the proper use of design can also help patients and their guests psychologically increase the healing process.
MAGGIE’S CANCER CARING CENTER
Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centers are centers for anyone who has been affected by cancer. By creating an entire hospital environment into a home-like area that creates a healthy living environment for the patients and their family members.
“Maggie's is about empowering people to live with, through and beyond cancer by bringing together professional help, communities of support and building design to create exceptional centres for cancer care.”

IDEO’S KRISTIAN SIMSARIAN
Kristian Simsarian is a designer for a IDEO a global design firm that takes a community design based approach to help organizations grow. In this specific redesign Simsarian experienced life as a patient in an emergency room by recording every second of his experience. After his recording he realized patients spend most of their time in bed and left to stare at the ceiling or the occasianal television sets hanging in the corners. Simsarian then proposed the idea of creating art forms on the ceilings. This is because the ceilings are usually one solid color (white) and can produce a feeling of boredom, anxiety, and more.

AN ENVIRONMENT THAT IS COMFORTABLE FOR ALL OF THE FACILITY USERS (DOCTORS/NURSES, PATIENTS, AND FAMILY MEMBERS)
AN ENVIRONMENT THAT DOES NOT OVERWHELM THE PATIENT
AN ENVIRONMENT THAT DOES NOT ISOLATE THE PATIENT FROM THE LIFE OUTSIDE OF THE HOSPITAL
