** NEXT MONTHS TRIAL NORTHLANDS TEAM LAVERDOS** NEWS AND COMMENT Ø

With your Newsletter is a copy of RFH Xmas catalogue and a reply paid envelope, have a look through and support the clubs Charity if you can – thanks.

Committee Meeting, Thursday 22nd September 8 pm at Six Bells, Newdigate. Anyone is welcome but some of us are meeting there early to try the new owners food and see if we want to book up for Xmas. Ø Unfortunate for Tim’s ride out as the colour Newsletter took time to prepare and went out too late for anyone to take part. Tim rode alone but I heard Clint say 2 or 3 went later. Hopefully another date can be arranged. Ø The last colour issue was very well appreciated and some said the best one yet. It’s Mike to thank for the design and

assembly of the mag and he scans hundreds of photos to get the best – keep them coming please. Can you remember Derek Head? He phoned before the July camp saying he, son James and friend were all coming to ride and join- on one bike, it must have got nicked as none arrived, bike or riders!

AUGUST TRIAL Mannings Heath 7.8.11 Usually we get a low entry in the summer holiday months but for this event we got the best entry for some months at 51. It had been wet for a few days before and shortly after the hooter it bucketed down for 10 mins making some sections difficult for the later starters ie Ian and Tim, who took refuge in the clubhouse until it stopped. Mike R had a lot of problems with his Bultaco and tried to sort it out while several Whites waited in vain. Eventually it went to the first section, had no petrol so it got stripped again then he decides to go down to Blues. Tony Van signed the kids on but he’d got a stiff neck, but Elaine was back on Reds – she’d been with Nigel and Tom for a weeks practice in Devon – confidence restored! Tiger Cub Ian J, part of the marking team was back and rode his Cheeta, got a dnf as he didn’t score his card. Cassie A looked like Eskimo Nell in her fur lined helmet and had a good ride on Yellows with her hot head. Adrian (team manager) didn’t make it, there were two members wanting recruitment to a team, Ray Morris amd Tom Horsborough, he’ll catch them soon! Sam A was delighted with his front cover picture, I told his wife Jackie it costs 50 quid – she believed me but I had to say I was kidding when

she looked concerned. Son Joe was there for his birthday treat, but reckoned the Yellow gates weren’t wide enough. When John C took his bike from the van we rushed for sunglasses, dazzled by the bright orange he’s painted the frame but it gave him an inspired ride. Walking around it was noticed that on Sect 9 whites took different routes, they need to be reminded that Blue is the basic route and whites have 3 or 5 alternative gates. Sean lost 5 & 8 to take the lead on his new Mont which was attended to for hours at lunchtime with computer whiz kids reprogramming the system – apparently there’s 96 alternative settings, however they later found a rubber band in the petrol tank, once removed it went OK. (No, the computer didn’t find it, Clint did!) Phil W was on a new bike and was worried he’d break something, Sam D admitted he’d done a few blues, Jack N hurried round and didn’t hand his cards in but Tom B is working his way up the entry very well. On Blues Tom H was the first HR member, I got him to join when he signed on! 2nd HR was Steve P in 5th followed by the noisy ‘taco of Mick R. Ian Mc, Tim H, Graham K and Bob C were all close in the 40’s but Harry R was pleased with this 100+ score saying he used to lose that on yellows which means he’s improving. Even John Y lost 12 on the Yellows. Next Brian B was 20 marks adrift with Nigel B displaying the result of his Devon practice in third spot tying with hothead Cassie. Looking at the midway scores you’ll see that Yellows had the hardest time while White and Blue were about spot on at 49 and 43, while Yellows collected a 65. So there’s plenty of excuses for those with higher than usual losses – and some earlybirds missed the rain.

Thanks to the team of Indians, Ian, Brian, Eric S and Ian J who provided a trail that attracted a good entry and no moans – they must all be in holiday mood. Hang on, I forgot the Reds and there were 5 of them – Jack T led, Jamie F lost a few more but said he’d done some Yellows, Elaine survived a 3rd place and Bob C’s grandson had his first outing without wearing Grandad out. CAMPING WEEKEND ROME – 3rd/4th September 2011 The notorious reputation of Rome Woods was crushed when we had a dry dusty site, even the streams were dry and sections marked accordingly. The sting in the tail arrived on Sunday when Rome hit back resulting in many dnf’s.

The Cossack team set out, led by Adrian H who deserves a medal for his hard work – he was there digging the loos on Friday at 2 pm, then he collected logs for the fire, then he blew up his air bed and laid it on a bramble *!ZX**&! And he had a flat on his rear tyre! The Davidsons set up their housing estate with a shower, Joe erected a netball hoop, do it on a hornbeam – what’s that? Says Adam. Phil arrived in darkness with only 36 lagers. We had a really warm evening round the fire with most of us in shirt sleeves. Marshmallow King Jamie was very productive but star act for the children was Tim & Fiona’s new dog ‘Woody’ eager to roll them all over. Everyone arrived with a different weather forecast, most optimistic, happy boozers filled bag with empties, it was a late night. Saturday – The rest of the Cossack Team arrive, Mark J together with faces that through the mists of time I recall as belonging to Barry J, Trevor M, and a wizard wobbler, the infamous Tea Bag. Fortunately John C went with them to produce some harder sections, with Sam and Joe D it was far from easy (on Sunday they actually eased a few off) and the results showed it. In the past winners have always been near, if not on 200, this time Tony was first on 135 with Mike 2nd, way back on 97 and John C on 85. Not all riders played the game, most stuck to the route normally ridden hoping they’d be well equipped for Sunday on the same sections. Adrian had stuck to blues, after 1 lap he’d only cleaned 1 section scoring 3, son Adam was on 5 by doing Reds! Harry R, after curing his bike of petrol starvation, ended higher up the list as his expertise steered him on Yellow. Joe D had a bloodied knee covered with a toilet roll and bound up with duct tape and still finished 4th, what happened to brother Sam? Phil W loved his new bike but attributed his problems to a poor rear tyre and regretted selling new ones on his last machine. Emily did a lap on the mini bike, but preferred the swing. Evening Time – now it’s a bit overcast. Fiona gives the latest on the weather, rain by 10 am tomorrow. Barbecue lighting took ages, but

when it got real hot Tony and Phil came with chunks of minted lamb and chicken legs pre-cooked (barbecued, frozen, thawed and cooked again) – be alright if they’re heated to 95deg C says T. They weren’t ill the next day. Round the fire about 20 collected, after a few beverages had gone down many ideas for new trials emerged including a trials/golf arrangement from Japan and Mike’s 20 sections each lap, reversed for lap 2 – next committee should be interesting. Sunday – It’s still dry but ominous, 31 entries isn’t bad under the circumstances. Tim and Mike joined the team to change a few sections especially the ½ mile ditch for white and blue. Several dash off after the hooter – they were wise but Jack N was soon back, hurt his back on section 4 and had to pack up. (Bob had told him to do Blue, but I said whites were OK!) The Chairman Ian is just signing on but had to wait while Anita Y picked up and sorted all the cards out after I’d knocked the box over, he got his change in 50p’s for lateness. Eric S arrived, his Grandson riding for the first time, Eric had a new metal shoulder fitted in July! And it’s not ready for action yet. Out on the course under the bridleway bridge things are getting slippery where the little water in the stream carries up. John C has a half hour long dab trying to stop his back wheel catching up with the front that had slipped down. Tom H comes through clean but Sam D is off in

the ditch. Up on section 8 Sam had another 5 missing a gate – he blamed me for watching – it’s starting to rain. With a low entry it was easy to find a section but no riders were ever on one, but I watched and saw Mick D clean No. 9 in spite of the spectator. A bit later it poured, yesterday John P paid a visit on his Velo and said he didn’t like summer trials – he’d have liked what was coming! The chairman with others were now sheltering in the clubhouse – he says he’s got to stop as his bike’s misbehaving and complains he was promised a Chairman’s parking sign. I told him a large sign had been made but we didn’t know where to stick it! Others are now coming back eager to dnf and go home – when I saw the Bray clan and Elaine amongst them I couldn’t believe a fisherman had stopped for rain – well they did now! It didn’t stop Tony, Phil and Stuart carrying on to finish, the scores show the cost. Cassie A had fallen and hit her knee on the footrest but it was the backside that suffered. Now it was time to clear up, it’s only 2 pm but many soaking T-Shirted riders wanted to dry out. Sam D was reminded by John C that as part of the team he had to go out again, he did but only took out the white flags on each section, he’ll learn. Rain has stopped so site clearing was quick to start. Tim & Fiona cleared loos, bonfire and barbe, taking 2 bags full of bottles home. Adam returns with kit, he’d had help from Barry, Mike, Mark and others but bikes were muddy. Dave A dispenses tea until the lat moments and natters – his report on Clilnt’s virus after the

operation on his arm reveals much suffering; then Barry says they’ll be back riding next March or Dave has promised to give him his 4RT The results show astonishing ½ way scores, 107, 93 and 137 – where we’ve included dnf’s as part of the entry. Havoc was played with ladder positions as the early birds really did benefit and even John Y was dnf while Joe D won the yellows on 4 points! So it’s over early, the tracks are slippery, John wonders if his furniture removal van will make it. Phil leaves with 6 bikes on 1 trailer, but Adrian needed all his trials skills to make the corner, his front wheels spinning as he looked for a bit of green to get some grip. End of a good weekend. Thanks to Team Cossacks, and the many helpers keeping up the HR Team Spirit – well done all.

From reports given by Mike he retired exhausted after 2 days but Sean had a good ride apparently and Ed finished too. This has inspired those two to enter the Scott itself. Last bloke in the club to do that was Ken Rickets many years ago, he got stuck in a bog and had to be recovered. Good Luck S & E!!.... Reeth scores: Sean 110, Ed 221.

Reeth Rocks: Sussex expert Miles Carruthers rode the expert route (we didn’t). He lost 297 - trial was won on 11! Sean got A Mont 4RT days before the trial and improved each day on a bike better suited to rocks than HR mud. Ed suffered from tyre problems and Mike from age/body problems. Always a top event - 3 different courses - 40 miles and 40 sections, mainly off road over the hills and over the rocks!!.
