NEWS AND COMMENT 2013   Friday  25TH  January    HR  Meal  and  Quiz  Night    Six Bells Newdigate - Following the successful evening in May this is a post Xmas get together   keep the date free! We are holding our second social evening with a meal followed by quiz evening. We hope to attract more heads than last time which was an enjoyable session. It’s at the Six Bells, Newdigate again as we found the food and service very good – the beer ain’t bad either. I hope to have menus and prices at the next trial and will push to get as many as possible to come to win the prizes! OUR SPECIAL XMAS NUMBER Coming up the December issue is a time for a special effort when we like to think we will get may contributions from you the membership. Obviously we live in hope that our Chairman will be one with his insulting and entertaining articles and perhaps the trials secretary and team leader will put pen to paper or email a note of two, or a laugh maybe raised by members writing of their youth or earliest motorcycle beginnings – why not try? If possible by end of November please! MARKING OUT REMINDER A while ago we reverted to putting in a full set of white markers for the course (team Greevies were not aware!) MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL Will be in the December issue – a reminder that we had to put these up a little for those that rush to pay at the trial – individual membership is £15 and family £18. Social non-riding members £10

but you still get a monthly Newsletter, WEBSITE Mike says this will be up and running later this month but he has been putting details on facebook in the meantime.

ROME RAINS SUPREME! November

Club

Trial

Overnight it looked like our turn to have Hurricane Sandy give us a visit as torrential rain left all roads leading to Rome Woods flooded to a level not seen in 15 years. Outside the Royal Oak pub I was worried the water level would be above the caravan door and Langhurstwood Road was blocked by a police car. Tim phoned at 7.30 am – shall we cancel? But by 9 am when I arrived Tom H was at the gate eager to get the punches out so we went ahead and got an entry of 20, all of whom doubted their sanity! On Saturday the Greevies Team had a nice day, Dan B, Tom H, Ray M and Nick G were aware that it would be wet on Sunday and marked accordingly, but still went and eased the gates on the day, it wasn’t going to be a good day for this team so a special thanks to them for their efforts on the day – clearing up was the last straw! Signing on was a slow and prolonged process with riders lamenting efforts to get there. Adrian H was weary from cycling 96 miles around the Olympic Cycling route the day before, reckons he rode 5600 feet up hill but did not achieve the record time. Big surprise when Gary S arrives with his 5 year old son who insisted on attending   don’t say anything, he has to learn that electric bikes won’t go everywhere in these conditions. Mick R re-appeared to collect kit for next month and gave us an entry of 3 white riders. He’d been too busy to ride but his bank balance

has flourished! Tony F was alone, Jamie just turned over in bed and stayed there, Phil W was camping with his sea cadets, not the best of nights to be out, Sean P says the website is still down so that won't help entries as they won't know  if  the  event  was  cancelled    he  is  going  to walk his dog, then collect his daughter who was camping (another one) and walking 12 miles a day for her Duke of Edinburgh award   I’d say he can keep it after last night! Then Clint gives us a visit, he’d got a shocking cold   don't come in I tell him, so he goes walking, like Sean who tells me theres a lot of grip on the leaf mould   confirmed by Tom who says that’s right, until you get to a narrow gate, he washes his cards in a puddle and reckons he’d lost 48 as the second and subsequent laps got really bad. Chairman Ian was last to arrive and talks Ray M and Nick G into changing their chosen route form Y to B - they’ll be sorry, but Ian could demonstrate his masterly prowess on the blue route. Mike Hyden paid his entry in egg money cash   so many coins a separate container was required! Out on the course which was not visited by your reporter, Fiona and Gordon had no comments on the suffering riders, but enjoyed the expanded streams and new waterfalls. The white route had been laid out as alternative gates to the blue basic, a practice we had abandoned – but didn’t seem to cause any problems. Mike and Tim said it was enjoyable but you had to commit yourself to ride the going down bits, they had seen Graham K in a non-committal position before he fell off! Mike also said the website should be back later this month, meanwhile it’s all on facebook – whatever that is! Mick R finished and says he’s knackered, the second two laps had taken its toll and the sofa was his next port of call. Tony F made an interesting comment when he said easiest bit today is loading the bike on the trailer. Martin T enjoyed

lap 1 but……. On the last section the drop was not within his fear limitations. Gary’s boy on the electric bike did get round 4 laps but had to wait while Dad did sections and got freezing cold. With only a small entry and a tiring course the riders hoping to complete got a move on and by 1.45 pm the team went to clear up, Kit was sorted and they took the flags away to give them a wash – a comment was made that we used to straighten the wires up ….. Tom said ‘if that’s a hint I didn’t hear it!’ Mick D had to be chased for his cards ‘do you really want to see them’. Nick G had throttle jamming problems out on the course so sorted it in the carpark with a million deafening revs as the cable stuck again. The results seem to show that the Blues had the toughest day with 3 entries finishing level on the mid-way score of 83. Tom H got off quick, as he knew the sections – his 4 laps were rapid but still lost 48, Tim followed then Dan B 65 and 67, but challenged by Ian. Ray M and Nick G regretted being talked into changing routes. Adrian had a good ride on yellows with Martin T 9 points adrift, reluctant card returner Mick D’s score didn’t look poor compared to schoolboy Adam on 146 and the last to finish in that group. Mick R was well ahead of Tony F and Mike – well he’s over 50! Luckily it didn’t rain all day so most of the flooding had gone on the way home. Thanks to Team Greevies and to all HR’s who turned out – actually they all said it was enjoyable!
