Welcome to the Hornby Recreation Summer Brochure 2023

Hornby Recreation is a committee of Hornby Island Residents’ and Ratepayers’ Association that networks with all the many physical activityoriented groups on the island. We offer a wide range of summer programming for youth as well as fun community day events/activities. Our mandate is to assist & provide recreation programs for all ages and to promote a healthy way of being, in which physical activity is a valued and integrated way of everyday life.

REGISTRATION & CANCELLATION POLICIES

Registration Policy:

Payment is to be made at the time of Registration to complete Registration and ensure a spot in that class/program. Payment options are CASH, CHEQUE, ETRANSFERS. Cheques are made out to “HIRRA-Recreation”. E-Transfers are emailed to recreation@hirra.ca.

Cancellation Policy:

Cancellation with more then 14 days notice, you will receive a full refund, minus a 10% administrative fee. Cancellation within 14 days you will receive 50% refund, Cancellation within 7 days you will receive NO refund. Thankyouforyourco-operation

Artistic Movement

Step right up and join A SUPER FUN SUMMER CAMP on HORNBY!

Facilitator's Cathy Coates and RootZ share 17+ years leading camps across Canada; together they will encourage talents, skills and smiles into a show-stopping spectacle for family and friends presented on Friday afternoon 1pm. Create your own routine to practice and perform or take part by supporting others.

Explore a plethora of mediums: gymnastics, juggling, mask costumes, physical theatre, storytelling, and clown along the way.

If you have a sketchbook, please feel free to bring it and share your art and ideas. We will take time to get artsy-crafty every afternoon.

Children of all experience levels and interests are invited to shine and support in this fun-filled week!

Bring a nutritious snack/ lunch and something to drink!

Date: July 3-7 Mon-Fri.

Ages: 7-12

Location: School Gymnasium

Time: 10am-3pm

Your Child will need:

NATURES EXPLORER CAMP

Explore nature and feel more at home in the outdoors by practicing the arts of tracking, communicating with animals, moving silently, identifying edible medicinal plants, basket, whistle, flute and jewelry making & more!

Nature explorers use wandering, role play, games & stories to teach about nature by inspiring curiosity.

Instructor: Frank Doss has been a nature enthusiast since childhood. He is the co-founder and instructor at the Wisdom of the Earth Survival School Salt Spring Island. He has taught ancestral skills and wood craft for 20 years and is excited to share his knowledge and love of nature on Hornby Island.

Date: July 10-14 Mon-Fri.

Ages: 7-12

Time: 10am-3pm

NINJA CAMP

Explore ancient Togakure Ninja training with practice in stealth skills, night training, jumping, climbing and More! This Camp is a perfect blend of learning and honoring the outdoors and ancient training, done in a safe and supportive manor. This camp is full of fun!

Instructor: Frank Doss is our Nature Explorers Camp instructor and this year we are lucky to have him for this great opportunity with Ninja Camp. He has been practicing Ninjutsu for 32 years and has taught ancestral and nature skills for the last 20 years. He brings great knowledge and a gentle camp atmosphere.

Date: July 17-21 Mon-Fri.

Ages: 7-12

Time: 10am-3pm

Notes: We have another programming running this week so make note you don’t double book. Circus is also July 17-20.

Please ensure that your child has enough food and drink for the day and is dressed appropriately for the weather with hat, sunscreen, etc. for either of these programs.

7 STORY CIRCUS

We are so excited to have 7 story circus back!!!! Join 7 Story Circus! Discover the magical world of circus arts. Juggle: scarves, balls, rings & clubs. Spin: staff, poi, diablo, flower-sticks & plates. Balance: stilts, rola-bola, & partner acrobatics. Play: Improvisation & performance games. Be inspired & amazed by your own abilities!

Instructor: Kaya Kehl, of 7 Story Circus, has been teaching circus arts for 17 years, training acrobats, jugglers & clowns. She has certification as a BC Gymnastics NCCP instructor and as an ACRiX circus instructor. She has experience as a professional aerial artist and a circus events producer. She has a love for all things circus!

Date: July 17-20 Mon-Thurs.

Location: The school gymnasium

Morning Group

Ages 6-9

Time: 10am-12pm

Your Child will need:

Ages: 9-12

Time: 12:30-2:30pm

KAYAKING

Come out and learn the basics about kayaking, water safety and how to handle a boat in the sea with Faroe. These 5 days will be fun with plenty of learning through games and exploration on and off the water to aid in learning basic boat handling skills and kayak/water safety.

Instructor: Faroe Des Roches is a Paddle Canada certified sea kayak instructor and Instructor Trainer and a SKGABC certified guide and Guide Trainer. Since 2004, she has shared her love of sea kayaking with students aged 8-80 and has explored much of the BC coast by kayak, as well as parts of Alaska, Baja California and Patagonia.

Please note:

• You will need a wetsuit to participate in this program

• Wetsuits are available for rent for the duration of the program for $15. Limited sizes available.

• Youth must me 8 years old to participate in this program.

DANCE WITH PANTUSO DANCE STUDIO

Join Christy Kooman and her team of young dancers from Pantuso Dance for a fun-filled dance camp experience. Kids will enjoy working with the instructors learning hiphop/ creative movement, ballet/jazz or both. These classes are fun, supportive and no experience is necessary.

Parent & tot

Dance class infused with fun and exploration to be enjoyed with your little one through the use of music, props and games.

Twirling Tigers

Come Discover the little artist within. A creative approach to expression and interpretation through dance.

MORE DANCE WITH PANTUSO DANCE STUDIO

Hip-Hop & Creative Movement

Join us for this fun, rhythmic expressive class that will touch on styles of hip-hop as well as improvisational exercises.

Dates: July 28-30 Fri.-Sun.

Ages: 6-9 Time: 11am-12:30pm

Ages 10 + older

Time: 1:00-2:30pm

Ballet/Jazz

Join us and explore the basics in ballet and jazz in a fun and supportive atmosphere.

Dates: July 28-30 Fri.-Sun.

Ages: 10 + older

Time: 11am-12:30pm

Ages: 6-9 Time: 1:00-2:30pm

About: Lifeguard Outreach Society (LGOS)

Lifeguard Outreach Society has been in operation since 2015, travelling to rural communities teaching swimming lessons, water safety skills, first aid and life saving training. They are all overly certified as first aid instructors of all levels, lifeguards and swim instructors and are affiliated with the life saving society. LGOS has taught over 2500 children swim survival and touched over 20 communities. We are excited and honored to bring them here to Hornby Island for their fourth visit teaching our youth life-long skills.

BRONZE STAR SWIM

Bronze Star is an introductory lifesaving course that focuses on personal fitness and swimming technique development, as well as self-rescue and lifesaving skills. Participants must be nine years of age or older. Competent swimming is required, but strong swimming is recommended.

Dates: August 1-3 Tues.-Thurs.

Location: Big Tribune

Ages: 9+ older

Time: 12:00-4:00pm

Cost: $115

The water temperature varies at this time of year. Wetsuits are an asset if you have one. Your Child will need: Appropriate swim wear, towel, dry sweatshirt, water bottle, snack.

SWIM 2 SURVIVE With Lifeguard Outreach Society

Make the move from the pool to the ocean with these great survival lessons offered by the Lifeguard Outreach Society (LGOS). These lessons will address each group’s needs within and out of the water activities focusing on water safety and awareness.

Participants of Swim to Survive will learn critical basic skills that are essential for surviving an unexpected fall into deep water. The skills practiced in the program include rolling into deep water, treading water for one minute and swimming 50 metres.

Swim to Survive is not designed as a replacement for normal swimming lessons as it typically focuses on basic survival skills. Although Swim to Survive is designed for children, all ages are welcome and encouraged!

7 years old and under must have a parent with them (1:1 parent/child ratio).

Dates: August 4-5 Fri.-Sat.

Location: Big Tribune

Ages 7+ Under 12:001:30pm .

Ages 8 + Older 1:30-3:00pm

Cost: $55

CARTOONING

Come and explore the world of cartooning. If you have ever wanted to learn how to draw your favorite character, create your own character, we are so excited to say Tyler Manson is here to teach us all these cool things! Tyler Manson taught himself to draw tracing comics on his living room window. Ever since then he has enjoyed cartoons, creating characters and graphic design. Join us and work on creating your own 1-page product piece.

Please bring with you a character, image or cartoon you would like to learn or an image that inspires you to create your own character.

Dates: August 8-10 Tues.-Thurs.

Location: Hornby Island School Ravens Room

Ages: 9-13

Time: 10:00am-1:00pm

THEATRE

Come and exploring the world of theatre and improv with Andrea Kaback. Andrea has been working, with Hornby Youth, in theatre, for the past 15 years. This Theatre camp emphasizes on storytelling, listening, improv work, confidence building and game play. The goal is to foster creatively and help young people give voice to their ideas in a supportive and nurturing environment.

Skit & Improve based theatre games

GOLF CLINIC

Learn the basics of golf with a few of our local golf Enthusiasts, Amanda Wilkinson and Tyler Manson on Hornby’s own golf course.

Date: Wednesday August 23, 2023
