2 Annak ellenére, hogy sokan propagandafilmként értelmezik az Into the Abysst, Herzog maga – a filmben és más nyilatkozataiban is – hangoztatja, hogy ő nem ezzel az intencióval készítette, bár személy szerint nem ért egyet ezzel a büntetés-végrehajtási gyakorlattal és tagadhatatlanul foglalkoztatja a halálbüntetés témája. Ezt az a tény is alátámasztja, hogy az Into the Abyss alapját képező történet eredetileg egy ötrészes dokumetumfilm-sorozat egyik epizódjaként futott volna, de a munka első fázisában Herzog úgy döntött, hogy külön filmet szentel Michael Perry esetének. A másik négy halálraítélt sorsát bemutató, négy, egyenként 50-50 perces részt tömörítő minisorozatot On Death Row (Halálsoron) címmel sugározták először 2012-ben az Egyesült Királyságban a Channel 4-on.

3 Értelmetlennek ez a tett a fogyasztói társadalom logikája alapján nevezhető, hiszen ha rablógyilkosság történt volna, vagy eladták volna az autót, rögtön lett volna könnyen értelmezhető indíték a gyilkosságok mögött. Így azonban értelmetlenek, értelmezhetetlenek a csak az örömautózás élménye miatt elkövetett tettek.

2 Even though many have interpreted Into the Abyss as a propaganda movie, Herzog himself emphasizes that he didn’t direct it with such intentions, even though he himself doesn’t agree with this form of punishment and is undeniably interested in the topic. This is reinforced by the fact that Into the Abyss would’ve been an episode in a 5-part documentary series, but Herzog soon decided to dedicate a whole film to the case of Michael Perry. The mini series itself was eventually aired on Channel 4 (UK) in 2012 under the title On Death Row. It is comprised of four 50-minute episodes, telling the stories of four others who have been sentenced to death.

3 It is only within the logic of consumer society that this act seems senseless. If it was a case of murder and robbery, or if the perpetrators sold the car, there would’ve been an easily decipherable motive behind the murders. This way however, having been committed purely for the sake of a joyride, the crimes remain senseless and inexplicable.
