HAPPY NEW YEAR! First and foremost, I would just like to wish everyone a happy and healthy year for all of 2018. As most of us know, it is usually around this time that we reflect the most on our general well-being and appearance and make up our minds to begin the new year with the best of intentions for improving our health.

in eating the food that suits your particular body? There would be no better gift to give yourself. With this test, everything you eat has the chance to enhance both your health and your figure, rather than resulting in more bloating, discomfort and weight frustrations. Comprehensive testing includes up to 180 different foods of a wide variety. Feel free to book an appointment with me, Breda Hayes O’Connor, on 087 277 2955.

Perhaps, in the hopes of maintaining our new year’s resolutions, I suggest that you take it one step at a time, and begin with your health and improving your energy to reach a new standard you would be happy with in 2018. Breda O’Connor

After the hectic run-up to Christmas and the many overindulgences of the festive food that disturbs your digestive system, it is important to give your body the optimum nutrition for energy and vitality. After all, it can be difficult to lose weight and feel energised when the food you are eating is slowing you down both physically and mentally. Why not consider treating yourself to a food sensitivity and nutrition test – to aid and guide you

SUPERIOR BLEND OF HERBS TO SUPPORT YOUR BODY Flor-Essence® is a superior blend of eight herbs which work to support, cleanse and strengthen the entire body. This Synergistic formula provides the body with valuable nutrients, antioxidants and blood purifying agents. Think of the body as a finely tuned vehicle. If we do not feed it with the proper fuel it will under-perform. If we do not maintain the vehicle, it will break down. Toxic over-load will lead to increased possibility of more long term complaints. To really see and feel the benefits we recommend taking Flor-Essence twice a year using our 10 Day Wellness Program to simply and effectively cleanse. Ingredients: Filtered water, Burdock root, Sheep Sorrel, Slippery Elm Bark, Turkish Rhubarb Root, Red Clover, Blessed Thistle herb, Kelp, Watercress and Citric acid. My NEW YEAR Health Goals by Rosanna Davidson I enjoy following a healthy and active lifestyle all year round, so my health goals for 2018 include maintaining a good level of fitness throughout the cold and dark early months of the year, so that I’m feeling fit, strong and healthy once spring arrives. We’re all a little bit more susceptible to colds and flus in the winter months, so I’ll definitely be paying extra attention to my immune system health by taking vitamin D3, good bacteria and eating plenty of fresh, whole foods daily. Here are my top New Year supplement picks:

UDO’S CHOICE SUPER 8 GOLD MICROBIOTICS: With a guaranteed 102 billion ‘friendly’ bacteria per capsule, Udo’s Choice Super 8 Gold microbiotics are designed to support digestive health and encourage the growth of beneficial gut flora. I have been using them for the past few months and I believe that they have really helped to improve my digestion. If you are already a fan of Super 8, think of Super 8 Gold as an upgrade!

very first indication of a blocked sinus, sore throat or other symptoms of a cold.

ONE NUTRITION POWER GREENS: Many of us struggle to eat enough dark green leafy vegetables, so this powder is an easy way to boost your daily intake, although it’s not a substitute for a balanced diet. I like to add it to smoothies, and benefits include a boost in energy levels. Rich in iron, it can improve oxygen flow around the body and help reduce feelings of fatigue.

ONE NUTRITION D3-MAX:

IRISH BOTANICA ECHINACEA:

A high-quality and vegan vitamin D3 supplement, I love how easy this is to take. Just a spritz under your tongue and it’s quickly absorbed into your bloodstream. D3 is particularly important to take throughout the winter months in Ireland when we don’t receive enough sunshine for vitamin D production in the body, and it’s essential for immune support and bone health.

Echinacea is a popular traditional herbal medicine for helping to improve cold and flu-like symptoms. I love that this brand is Irish, of a superior quality and ethically sourced. I would begin taking it at the

DISCOVER THE UDO’S OIL EFFECT WITH FITNESS EXPERT, PAT DIVILLY’S TOP TIPS The foods we eat will have a huge impact on how we look, feel, move and think and so it is our responsibility to educate ourselves and make small consistent changes to any habits that aren’t giving us what we want.

NUTRITION • Buy and cook as much ‘real’ (unprocessed) food as possible e.g. fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, eggs, seeds, nuts and spices. • Embrace ‘good’ fats. Omega 3 and 6 fats are essential to your body’s wellbeing, especially your heart, brain and eye function. Many fans also see an improvement to the quality of their skin and hair. You need to add them into

MINDSET • Understand the underlying reason (the ‘why’) for making the change. Embrace it fully. It will help you keep going when you feel challenged. • Set yourself a roadmap, a 90-day goal. Break it into manageable chunks as if you are on a journey. • Be kind to yourself. Each evening journal what you did well that day and what part of the journey you travelled. Congratulate yourself. If you ‘fall off’ the wagon, use these journaled achievements to get yourself up and going again.

your diet by eating specific omega rich foods (oily fish, avocados, flaxseeds and walnuts) and supplementing with a quality organic oil such as Udo’s Oil. By so doing, you are laying a solid foundation for good health. • Batch cook, refrigerate and freeze. This makes life easier and is healthier than consuming ready-made meals. • Eat with intent. Savour your food. Let your taste buds take you on a journey by cutting out unnecessary distractions when eating (TV, phone, radio).

EXERCISE First and foremost, find a form of exercise you enjoy. • Decide on your goal. By having one, (however small) you will be more likely to stay focussed and motivated. • Start slowly e.g. a twenty-minute walk per day. When you are into a rhythm and routine, try to build your time and pace up by an extra 1% per day. Always listen to your body. Grab your own bottle of Udo’s Oil from your local Horans Health Store.

YOUR QUESTIONS OUR ANSWERS Q

Whenever I take a break from work, like Christmas holidays, I often get sick and feel exhausted, how can I avoid this happening?

It is quite possible you are adrenally exhausted before your break. When your adrenal glands are on their last legs, most people keep going by working long hours, or using stimulated drinks, such as tea and coffee, and cigarettes. Adrenal hormones may also help to suppress infections. But when the pressure is off and you sit back for a week or so, your adrenal glands will also relax and your true state which is usually utterly knackered emerges! You could take 3g of VITAMIN C and a high dose of B-COMPLEX daily, plus some Rhodiola (this is a herb that helps to nourish the adrenal glands). It

Salus do a very good ARTICHOKE supplement which helps maintain a healthy digestion. It’s liquid form and you take20ml either before or after meals. Another product to look at is A. Vogels’ DIGESTISAN, this also contains artichoke along with Dandelion and Peppermint. 20 drops in a little water 3 times a day should help. Also, consider taking a digestive enzyme capsule prior to each meal, which will help you breakdown and digest your foods.

Why Breakfast Matters by Oliver McCabe Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and should be wholesome and filling. A good breakfast provides a great start for the entire day, and has a great effect on mood and productivity. It’s vital for mental and physical health, as part of a daily routine and particularly in times of stress.

TOP TIPS

Mindful eating: Taking some calming breaths before eating will aid good digestion. No refined sugar and less caffeine: Refined sugar and caffeine may make you feel better temporarily, but your body soon “crashes” from the high, leaving you exhausted or irritable. Low serotonin (the happy hormone) levels in the brain can cause cravings for carbohydrates such as cakes, sweets, chocolate and alcohol, as the body uses insulin to trigger serotonin release.

breakfast is important for everyone, regardless of age, but especially for children and teenagers as it helps them remain focused and fuelled. Breakfast of champions: The ideal breakfast should have plenty of fibre and whole grains, some protein and healthy fat, and as little added sugar as possible—in other words, a good balance of healthy carbohydrates, protein and essential fats. Keep your breakfast choices simple so you don’t need to worry or stress about it. Egg It: Eggs contain important brain fats called phospholipids. Phospholipids enhance your mood, mind and mental performance. There’s no evidence that eating eggs promotes high blood-cholesterol levels or increases the risk of heart disease. Eggs can help to build muscles and they are rich in protein, cholesterol and vitamins A, D and E. Yolks are rich in vitamin D so eat the whole egg to get the whole nutritional package.

Don’t skip: Most people simply make up for a skipped meal by eating more at other meals, which is not advisable. Breakfast is the perfect opportunity to ensure that you have your recommended daily intake of vitamins and minerals. Skipping breakfast can mean missing out on essential nutrients plus a greater probability of filling up on nutrient-poor sweet or savoury snacks, while missing out on fruit and vegetables. Skipping meals rarely helps with weight loss.

Oat Up: Oats are economical, versatile and nutritious. Prepare hot porridge with natural yoghurt and fresh berries or soak oats overnight in apple juice and natural yoghurt to create a bircher muesli topped with flaxseed and banana. Alternatively, bake oats in the oven the day before with nuts and seeds and maple syrup to make a scrumptious granola with chia seeds. Oats stabilise blood sugar levels and prevent sugar crashes, as they are full of slow-releasing carbohydrates that give you plenty of energy until lunchtime. They contain a lot of soluble fibre that is rich in beta-glucans. This particular type of fibre has been shown to lower bad cholesterol levels and help prevent high blood pressure.

Quick Breakfast: Sip on a homemade green smoothie throughout the morning or have your oat porridge with nuts, seeds, natural yoghurt and fresh fruit, or a boiled egg first and then fruit an hour or so later. A nutritious

Try getting up fifteen minutes earlier to enhance your enjoyment of the early morning experience of the best meal of the day—you’ll be glad you did. Soon it will become a stress-free daily ritual with wonderful benefits. 5

THE ULTIMATE WINTER WELLNESS PACKAGE

HOW TO KEEP YOUR MIND AND BODY HEALTHY THIS WINTER Every New Year, we make plans to get our health back on track. While the resolutions are important, taking omega-3 and vitamin D daily is one of the best ways to fight off the winter blues and keep colds and flus at bay. Omega-3 and vitamin D offer a wide array of benefits to the body and Marketing Director deficiency is widespread. With this in mind, Eskimo-3 are delighted to announce the addition of NEW Eskimo-3 Advanced EPA with Vitamin D3, a high quality food supplement combining omega-3 fish oil with natural vitamin D3.

Olive Curran DipNT

OMEGA-3 - ESSENTIAL TO GOOD HEALTH

The most beneficial Omega-3 fats EPA and DHA are primarily found in fresh, oily fish such as mackerel, salmon, anchovies and sardines. Your body can’t naturally produce Omega-3, so you must get these fatty acids from your diet. Omega-3 fatty acids are the building blocks of every living cell in the human body. They are absolutely necessary for normal health and development. Omega 3s supports brain, eye, and heart health throughout

life. Omega-3s also play an important role in thinning the blood and reducing inflammation throughout the body – in the blood vessels, the joints, skin and elsewhere. Omega-3s have been found to improve numerous heart disease risk factors. There is more scientific evidence behind the cardiovascular benefits of fish oil than any other nutritional supplement. Omega-3s have been found to improve numerous heart disease risk factors. They help to reduce blood pressure, reduce triglycerides and improve blood circulation. Recent research demonstrates that consumption of omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D can play a role in reducing depression. Studies have found that people who consumed fish frequently exhibited fewer depressive qualities than those who didn’t consume fish.

VITAMIN D - THE SUNSHINE VITAMIN

Vitamin D is fast becoming known as a “super-nutrient” and is perhaps the single most underrated nutrient. No longer just an important nutrient for healthy bones, some studies have shown an association between low levels of vitamin D and

certain cancers, diabetes, autoimmune diseases and cardiovascular disease. Vitamin D is crucial when it comes to activating your immune system. It helps to keep the “guards” of your immune system alert. Vitamin D is also important for bone, teeth and muscle health. Vitamin D also regulates the conversion of tryptophan into serotonin –your feel good hormone. Low levels are thought to be responsible for S.A.D (seasonal affective disorder), commonly referred to as “The Winter Blues”, and therefore supplementing with vitamin D during the winter months can help ease symptoms and improve mood. The need for supplemental Vitamin D has never been greater. The human body is able to produce vitamin D3, but only after sufficient exposure to the UVB rays in sunlight, therefore deficiency is often an issue for people during the winter months, when sunlight is in short supply. Taking a daily fish oil supplement, naturally rich in omega-3 with added vitamin D3 can support your heart, brain, joints, immune system, bones, mood and skin and is a simple way to safeguard your health.

ESKIMO-3: IT’S WHAT’S ON THE INSIDE THAT COUNTS

On the market for more than two decades and with over 120 scientific studies, the Eskimo range represents probably the finest quality fish oil on the market, providing Omega-3 rich oil of legendary purity, freshness and stability. The oil is always from sustainable sources, and there is full traceability and quality control throughout the production process, from fishing boat to finished oil. This traceability (and accountability) has resulted in the Eskimo® range being awarded a ‘Friend Of The Sea’ certificate. Further information is available at eskimo3.ie.

The five herbs in Milk Thistle Complex are Globe Artichoke

Phytotherapists use these herbs to enhance liver and gall bladder function and help improve digestive function. “Nature is always ready to make amends for our mistakes.” Alfred Vogel

Refill, and aim to finish the second litre by bedtime. Use for all your teas, coffees, soups - even what you use to make your porridge in the morning! It all counts.

• Great source of Magnesium, Zinc, Iron, B Vitamins, Fibre • Contains 17,3 grams protein per one cup of aduki beans • Promotes regular bowel movement Heidi, Killarney

BEAUTY TIP

Coconut Oil can be used to soften and soothe ageing, dry skin or you can apply it as an intensive hair-repair oil (simply comb into hair, leave for approx 30 mins, wash as usual, for a silky, youth ful gloss). Mary, Listowel

STAFF FAVOURITE

For years I abused my hair, I have been pink, purple, blue, black, blonde, every colour, my hair had gotten to the stage where it had gotten so dry and brittle just breaking away when brushed I decided to stick with one colour and try the Naturtint hair colour in shade 5n, my hair has never felt and looked so good, its strong, less split ends and most of all shiney and healthy. Sinead, Horans Healthstore Newcastlewest

TOP TIP

Add an extra crunch to your salad this month by using sesame sticks instead of croutons – also packed with protein. Deirdre, Manor

DID YOU KNOW?

Marigold heals irritated & sore skin such as eczema, wounds and rashes. Comfrey speeds up the healing process of cuts, scars & slow healing wounds. Chickweed is brilliant for relieving skin irritations like insect stings/bites, reduces inflammation in acne/ spots, blisters, chicken pox etc.

Work smart - check the capacity of your favourite cups and mugs, maybe change over to a 330ml instead of a standard 250ml mug. Fill a travel mug and consume on the journey to work. Give yourself mental reminders - put your water where you can see it. If you find it difficult to drink plain water add something to it eg. A squeeze of lemon, any cordial, a few mint leaves.

Measuring and tracking any aspect of our behaviour increases our awareness of our behaviour which, in turn, increases our chances of implementing successful changes in our lives. All of your body systems, and especially your brain, work most efficiently when they are guaranteed a regular supply of water. So, do yourself a big favour - keep yourself well-watered and you will blossom. Ps. Only drink small amounts with your meals. Caroline, Mitchelstown

After a while you will find yourself keeping a mental tot of what you are drinking, and you will have an increased awareness of your natural thirst levels. Congratulations! You are successfully developing a new healthy habit.

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR

This ancient product has been around forever but it is only recently that its amazing health benefits have come to light. When choosing apple cider vinegar it is important to choose Organic Raw Unfiltered with the Mother, which means it contains all the apple even its skin.

Majella, Nenagh

It can be consumed in the morning with warm water as it helps to detox the body after sleep. It helps to balance the ph in the body, making it more alkaline and less acidic which can lead to poor health. Apple cider vinegar can also help with many health issues if consumed before bedtime. It can greatly improve your overall life and health. One teaspoon in some water can help with sore throats, insomnia, sinuses, blood sugar levels, bad breath, weight loss, indigestion, reflux and bloating. It can help lower cholesterol. It improves the absorption of nutrients from our foods. It has antioxidant properties which can help with the aging process and can increase levels of good bacteria in gut. WHY DO WE NEED ANTIOXIDANTS? Antioxidants are vital for our health as they have been shown to support healthy ageing, reducing chronic disease, improving cognition and mental health. Olivia Beck Ultimately they work to maintain and improve general health and wellbeing. Antioxidants are abundant in nature, because plants contain antioxidants to protect themselves too. The nutritional content of natural whole foods is just what our body needs to reduce the effects of oxidation. However, we sometimes struggle to obtain sufficient antioxidants in the modern world due to urbanization, overuse of agricultural land, intensive farming, stress-fuelled society and easy access to processed foods. This means that we are often unable to provide our body with the essential nutrition required to defuse this free radical activity. Not only do free radicals naturally occur in the body, we can also absorb them from our environment. Examples are through burnt or fried foods, exposure to chemicals such

SO WHAT CAN WE DO TO PROTECT OURSELVES? • Eat organic and/or local produce as much as you can afford. Look out for the ‘dirty dozen’ and ‘clean fifteen’ as a basis.

ww Grapeseed extract (as Vitaflavan®) - an excellent source of oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs). These antioxidant molecules have approximately 50 times more free radical scavenging ability than vitamins C and E.

• Base your diet on whole foods in forms of fresh fruit and vegetables and good quality protein. • Minimize and ideally eliminate processed foods, usually void of any antioxidant nutrition.

ww Quercetin - One of the most potent antioxidants that is used often by nutritionists to support normal histamine release and support an overactive immune system.

• Keep a healthy mind by staying hydrated and maintaining good balance between work and home. • Look after your gut. A healthy gut is a healthy body! • Include key nutrients in your diet that help support high antioxidant activity, such as: ww Turmeric - containing the active ingredient curcumin. Our favourite moisturiser from the HAREBELL HERB range for this time of year is CARRAGEEN AND LAVENDER. It can be used as a day and night moisturiser for both face and body. Carrageen is an Irish Seaweed, well-known for its beneficial properties for skin care, including anti-ageing, hydrating, nourishing and healing, while Lavender has a calming effect on the skin. This combination is great as it is hydrating, leaves the skin silky smooth and can be used on all skin types including sensitive skin. It can also be used around the eyes and lips to help with any fine lines and wrinkles.

New study: MAGNESIUM IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN YOU CAN POSSIBLY IMAGINE Did you know that more than 300 enzymes in your body depend on magnesium? Some enzymes help control your muscle function, some keep your nerves in balance and some are vital for maintaining strong bones. Getting too little magnesium could easily interfere with these essential body functions, so you may want to pay extra attention to this particular nutrient. According to a recent study, the majority of people know about magnesium, yet only 30% are fully aware why it is so vital. Are you deficient? If you have a great diet which includes lots of spinach, pumpkin seeds, almonds and avocado on a daily basis, you are most likely getting adequate amounts of magnesium as these foods contain higher quantities. However, if you are like most others, there is a risk that you are not getting enough magnesium from your diet.

A supplement can help This problem can be solved with a supplement such as BioActive Magnesium. With each tablet, you get 200 mg of bioavailable magnesium in a special formula that includes three different magnesium salts in a readily soluble matrix. If you put a BioActive Magnesium tablet in a glass of tap water, it will dissolve within a minute. Just in case you had not made the association: normal muscle function includes the heart, normal function of the nervous system includes not feeling stressed and maintaining strong bones is good for staying active all your life.
