After the dreaming, planning, financing, designing, building, hiring, training, licensing and logistics, after the ribbon-cutting, fanfare and flurry of press, the shining moment of HopeWay’s inaugural year unfolded quietly, privately, in the simple act of the first client arriving for care.

A solitary moment.

Extraordinary treatment for mental illness.

And the cure for despair.

It would be easy to define HopeWay by its remarkable facility and grounds. and by the sense of hope that infuses every detail, inside and out. But most critical is how it has changed the landscape of mental health care in the charlotte region and beyond. HopeWay’s complete continuum of psychiatric care is delivered in a holistic, integrated model: 24-hour residential treatment, two levels of day treatment, community education and support. the atmosphere is calm and uplifting amid the crucial, life-saving work underway. a monumental first-year accomplishment was getting the Joint commission’s Gold Seal of approval for Behavioral Health care accreditation and a separate certification as a Behavioral Health Home. over seventy full-time professionals joined the staff and extraordinary treatment programs were launched which include group therapy, art, music, nutrition, recreation and horticulture. there was even a new puppy: theo the therapy dog has become a beloved member of the HopeWay family and a community liaison. to raise awareness and reduce stigma, HopeWay presented its first annual public event as part of the covington educational program featuring brain-health advocate and storyteller Kevin Hines. another inaugural event was the Hoops for HopeWay basketball tournament, which packed the gym with hundreds of people championing mental wellness. We have treated hundreds of clients on campus and touched thousands in the community and across the nation. and this is only the beginning.

Letter from the CEO/Chief Medical Officer and the Chairman of the Board on September 21, 2016, we stood together in front of many of you as we cut the HopeWay blue ribbon to open our campus. on November 23, 2016, we cheered as we obtained our state license to launch operations. on November 30, 2016, we welcomed our first client through the front doors and gave thanks that the dream of HopeWay had been realized for the men, women and families who need us. on august 25, 2017, we celebrated as the Joint commission awarded us the Gold Seal of approval.

Momentous. What a perfect word to help describe what has come to be at HopeWay. If we looked at each week since HopeWay was founded, there would be varying momentous occasions or milestones we could lift up with awe and gratitude. events or things tend to be seen as momentous, but at HopeWay, what is truly momentous are the people. as we close our first year of operations, we reflect on those who have made HopeWay the truly remarkable place that it is today.

For the Board of Directors, thank you for providing wisdom, time and leadership to make important decisions that continue to shape the mission of HopeWay. For the designers, engineers, contractors and construction partners, thank you for your diligent work in creating a nurturing facility for this important work and an inviting campus for the clients and families who come here for support.

Since 2014, together you have supported HopeWay to build out a campus, get operations off the ground, provide many of our clients with financial assistance and launch our awareness and educational program.

For the 246 clients and numerous loved ones, thank you for entrusting us to provide the hope and treatment needed during a difficult time in your lives. as our mission statement says, HopeWay is here to make Hope tangible by inspiring mental wellness for all. this includes the people who come through our doors so desperate for treatment and encouragement and for those in our community who simply want to be part of the mental health conversation that will make us all stronger.

We still have much good and hard work to do in the coming year.

We’ve come this far because of you, and we trust that 2018 will be full of hope for all because of those who will continue to support our mission and vision. thank you for giving of your time and your resources and for believing that this dream would be momentous for this region and for people we serve.

in the past year numerous people who have benefitted from the care at HopeWay have sincerely expressed their gratitude for the help they received. nothing is more meaningful. Just recently, at the HopeWay holiday party, a residential client approached us and said; “Mr. and Mrs. Blue, i just wanted to introduce myself and thank you for HopeWay. This is my 35th and last night here and i am so much better. i’m going home tomorrow to be with my wife and baby for Christmas.” HopeWay’s mission is to Make Hope Tangible, and in that moment it was.

To choose one memorable moment from the past year is like picking out a single star from the night sky. To describe just one star, it is important to know the context of the overarching constellation, and know that it is part of a meaningful pattern that invokes a larger story. Among the imaginary outlines of the constellations is ursa Major, otherwise known as a bear. As bears appear in the night sky, so do they appear in the art room. We explore the bear as a metaphor for mental illness, intrusive thoughts, and unhealthy relationships. We examine the ways we feed our bear as well as what happens when we don’t.

A memorable moment comes from a young adult whose depression was so pervasive and overwhelming that she thought her only outlet from the emotional pain was suicide. she had a plan. she had intention. And then she had doubt enough to get help. On her first day at HopeWay, she attended the art therapy group where we happened to be sharing our bear stories. The client sat for a long time in silence before slowly reaching for a pencil. she drew a large bear that covered her paper but was so faint it could hardly be seen. “i didn’t even know i had a bear,” she whispered. This was her first acknowledgement that she had mental illness. As her time at HopeWay went on and she returned to her vibrant self, she continued to talk about her bear and how she didn’t know she had one. When she graduated from the program, she reminded me of her bear story. it allowed her to see something that she hadn’t seen before. This is just one moment, one star, in a broad blanket of moments that are like stars that shine bright.
