Spring 2018

SERVICE ENTERPRISE IS A SUCCESS! Hope House Foundation is a Service Enterprise Initiative Affiliate allowing us to augment our services using skilled volunteers. This affiliation reduces our operating budget by providing free services that would otherwise require paid staff. Executed locally by Volunteer Hampton Roads, Hope House Foundation was one of seven organizations chosen to participate. Our staff went through extensive training and implementation stages to become certified. For the past three years, we have had the benefit of 466 volunteers who logged in 4,886 hours. Their service is valued at $120,562.

This program is essential because Virginia ranks at the bottom for community-based funding for people with developmental and intellectual disabilities. To provide excellent services, we must consistently raise funds and find ways to augment our budget. Service Enterprise is another example of how we use every resource available to provide the people we serve with the one-on-one, tailored community experiences that are not reimbursable through the Commonwealth’s Medicaid Waiver funding.

MORE CARE

GETTING BY WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM OUR FRIENDS Lynne Seagle, Executive Director

They give their time, expertise, enthusiasm and skills without compensation. They strengthen us in a multitude of ways and lift our mission from concept to reality. They pour beer at Shamrockin’ in Ghent, empty trash and provide artist relief at the Stockley Gardens Arts Festivals, organize Feather the Nest, assist people with disabilities in personalizing their homes, fix all kinds of things for free, sort donations at the Thrift Shop and provide guidance and leadership as a Board of Directors. They are often referred to as volunteers, but we know them as friends. We learned early on that our vision of inclusion for people with disabilities could never be realized without partnership and engagement from those who live in Hampton Roads. Quite simply we do this together, and I believe the success we have realized is embedded in that notion. We are now in our third year as a certified Service Enterprise agency. We partnered with the wonderful organization, Volunteer Hampton Roads and achieved this status so we could expand our connections and impact through skilled volunteers. We are so fortunate to have the expertise of community members in the areas of accounting, human resources, IT, retail, legal services and program development. This has increased our ability to provide services and supports without increasing public dollars, but more importantly it has made visible the heart of this place we all call home and what we as a community aspire for it. We are grateful and honored for the opportunity to work, laugh and problem solve with the volunteers of Hope House. Together we will continue to build community for all.

“Volunteering is the ultimate exercise in democracy. You vote in elections once a year, but when you volunteer, you vote every day about the kind of community you want to live in.” -Author Unknown
