Celebrating God’s faithfulness!

Emmanuell and John-John were two of the original eight orphans in Haiti nearly 30 years ago. In November, 2012, they were our honored guests during our 30 Year Anniversary Banquet. Today Emmanuell works as a Presidential Security Officer at the Palace in Port Au Prince, Haiti. John-John is a police officer in New York. They are both deeply rooted in Christ, devoted husbands and fathers and are examples of God’s faithfulness and of lives transformed by the grace and mercy of Christ. Each One Matters.

About Us Hope for the Hungry is a nonprofit charity established in 1982 by Dan and Kandy Kirkley in response to the needs of thousands of children dying every day due to malnutrition and preventable disease. From that day forward, our passion and goal has been to “Share the Bread of Life with a Starving World”. This means that we work diligently to give people the spiritual, physical, and educational foundation they need to produce sustainable efforts to begin the process of removing themselves and their families from generational poverty. In our 30 years of existence, we have helped establish work in over 17 different countries, including the United States, through our Cooperative Ministries Division. We are blessed to be a part of the Body of Christ working together in an effort to relieve the spiritual and physical poverty of the poorest of the poor both at home and across the globe for Christ’s glory.

Highlights of 2012 We grew our partnership with Kids Against Hunger, becoming the exclusive partner for the Temple chapter and a significant partner for two other chapters in Texas. This partnership provides thousands of meals to Hope for the Hungry at no cost. We are then able to ship these meals to Haiti to be used in emergency relief efforts and in our School Feeding Program.

The schools in Guibert, Drouin and Marothiere continue to grow and provide a quality educational foundation for the children in those communities. Our new school in Ferrier is already meeting full capacity, providing a quality education to over 150 children.

Construction on the Mission & Training Center in Guibert is still under way. This facility will provide housing for volunteer teams and education space for an adult education and job training program. Construction on the Mission & Training Center should be completed by the end of 2013. Additionally, housing is being constructed for a long term missionary family.

Our Local Outreach program faithfully played, taught & loved the kids in Belton on Tuesdays & Thursdays. Coats for Kids & Christmas for Kids were blessings for the kids & families.

Children’s Ministry 2012 was an incredible year for our Children’s Ministry. We are continuing to see tremendous growth in our Local Outreach program this year and will prayerfully consider the addition of a new staff member to oversee this area of ministry in 2013. Our ministry continues to grow and develop in Haiti. God is changing hearts, lives and entire communities as we partner in the Gospel with the local church in Haiti. 

Our children’s homes in Haiti continue to do well. In 2012, our Spirit of Truth Children’s Homes cared for 64 children - 34 boys at our boys’ home in Guibert and 30 girls at our girls’ home in Ferrier. Our children’s homes are a testimony to the redemptive and healing power found when a person encounters the love of our living Savior, Jesus.

Two new boys, Willy and Wilner, came to live at our boys’ home this year. They are four year old twins and are adjusting to their new environment very well. (photo top left)

Two of the boys from the boys’ home in Guibert have graduated and are eligible for acceptance into university level studies. Eclesiaste began his college education this year and is doing very well. He is majoring in agricultural development. Guinsly graduated in July and passed all his college entrance exams. He will begin his university studies in the Fall of 2013, majoring in civil engineering.

In 2012, we saw our Local Outreach ministry continue to grow in participation. Our 2012 average was approximately 30 children each day of our weekly program. We also hosted our 2nd Annual National Night Out community gathering in conjunction with Belton Police Department and the Belton Housing Authority. This was a great evening of community outreach and involvement.

Through community support, we saw a dramatic increase in our two benevolent initiatives, “Coats for Kids” and “Christmas for Kids”. We were able to provide assistance to 166 children, impacting 58 families through our “Christmas for Kids” program. We also assisted 73 families by distributing over 170 warm, winter coats through our “Coats for Kids” program. (photo top right)

Cooperative Ministries 2012 has been the year of increased communication and intentional partnership within our Cooperative Ministries division. We have seen an increase in our local awareness of, interest in and participation with many of our missionary families and cooperative ministries. 

Our Cooperative Ministries division maintains and offers administrative services and pastoral care to missionaries and ministries around the world.

We are now serving 32 missionary families, serving in 17 nations and 14 cooperative organizations, by providing administrative services, purposeful resources and pastoral care. These services allow these missionaries and smaller organizations to focus on ministry without the added burden of administrative costs and tasks.

We have been working diligently to create more awareness for each of our cooperative missionaries and organizations. This has led to some unique opportunities for partnership and cooperation.

Our Director of Cooperative Ministries, Mike Lawson, was able to travel to Guatemala to visit with our missionary, Teri Littrel. This was a great opportunity to serve alongside a team from Wisconsin, while encouraging Teri in her ministry. As a result, Hope for the Hungry will be leading a team to Guatemala in 2013.

Helping to meet the needs of missionaries in crisis is very much a part of Cooperative Ministries. From counseling needs to comfort of families who have lost a loved one we are there to meet the needs of the missionary. 2012 HOPE FOR THE HUNGRY

Special Events In 2012, we continued to expand and refine our special event fundraisers. These events have grown in both size and scope as we seek to create greater awareness, while raising funds for our ministry needs. 

We hosted two 5K races, “Trails of Hope”, which gave us the opportunity to promote healthy living, while presenting the needs of children around the world who suffer without physical necessities and who live without Christ. Our 5K races were a great success in 2012. We had over 500 participants between the two races, which allowed us to raise over $9000 for the ministry of Hope for the Hungry. In September, we had our road course certified by the USA Track & Field Association. This allowed for future partnership with local and regional clubs. This event has led to great awareness, unique volunteer opportunities and increased community partnership with local businesses and the City of Belton.

“Taste of Hope” continued to be a great avenue for community awareness and fundraising in 2012. We hosted several of these events during 2012, partnering with and promoting local businesses in an effort to further the cause of Christ.

Hope continues to support “The Change of Hope” coin campaign and “Cans for Kids” as simple, practical fundraisers to help make a difference within the ministry.

30 Year Banquet In 2012, we celebrated our 30th Anniversary by hosting a fundraising banquet in November. This was a tremendous evening of celebration, honoring our Lord for His work in and through Hope for the Hungry. 

Our banquet attendance was close to 600 people, many of whom were new to Hope for the Hungry.

We raised over $65,000, meeting many needs and raising the awareness of our cause.

Our banquet brought many new contacts for our ministry as well as over 30 first time donors.

We were blessed to have many of our missionaries and ministry friends join us for the evening. We were especially blessed to be joined by our friends from Haiti, including two of our original boys’ home residents, John-John and Emmanuell.

Our events and banquet are more than fundraisers, they also allow us to share what God is doing through Hope for the Hungry and help us raise champions for the cause.
