Even the healthiest among us have “chinks in our armor” and can benefit from these objective lab tests. There are many tests available to those looking for a health tune up. Here are several tests that I usually recommend when initiating a wellness tune-up. Read more on page 10.

Protein powder is big business. If you’ve been to a health food store lately, you’ve probably been overwhelmed by the selection of protein powders available. I’m not just talking flavors, but different types of protein.

Being in the fitness world as a bodybuilding competitor, I’ve noticed that everyone has a favorite protein type. Of course, they all think theirs is better than the rest. Who do you listen to? Most people in the field are more concerned with muscle and peak performance than the dangers of consuming certain types of proteins or sweeteners. I think it is possible to have it all. And, as always, research should be done before choosing which protein powder to spend your money on and consume on a daily basis. Here are the different types of proteins used in the powders on the market. Some are good, some are bad, and some are toxic.

Whey Protein Powders Whey protein is the most common type of protein powder on the market. It’s a complete protein source because it contains all nine of the essential amino acids your body needs. These are amino acids your body can’t produce on it’s own. Whey contains protein, lactose, minerals and a tiny amount of fat. It’s pros are that it is complete protein, has high L-leucine content, is rapidly absorbed, helps build and maintain muscle because of it’s branch chain animo acids, and is relatively inexpensive compared to other protein sources. Whey protein comes in a three types – Concentrate, Isolate, and Hydrolysates. Whey concentrate is an ultra-filtered product that includes 20% – 90% of actual protein. The rest of the powder is made up of lactose, minerals and fats. On labels, it will sometimes tell you the percentage of actual

protein. This is the cheapest whey protein available. The drawback of this protein powder is that it has more fat, higher carbs and more lactose. Whey isolate utilizes a membrane filtration technique. It’s aim is to produce greater than 90% protein concentrate by “isolating” the protein from the carbs and fat. Whey isolate is lactose free, very digestible and very low in fat and carbs. However, this protein is about double the price of whey concentrate. Whey hydrolystate or hydrolized is a pre-digested protein. It is meant to be quicker for the body to digest because they have separated out the peptide bonds. It is about 99% pure protein and more digestible than isolate or concentrate. It is also the most expensive form of whey protein. Many people get confused on the topic of hydrolyzed protein vs. hydrolyzed whey protein. Hydrolyzed protein usually includes MSG because of the glutamic acid, additionally, it is not produced from the milk, but from other areas of the cow. Hydrolyzed protein is not the same as the hydrolyzed whey protein. Hydrolyzed whey protein is simply a more filtered and broken down whey protein. In determining the quality and efficacy of the protein in general, they use two terms, BV and PDCAAS. BV measures the ability of an animal or person to utilize that protein. PDCAAS measures the protein quality based on its amino acid content in relation to the Continued on page 13

Gardens on the Moon? By Andy Canella Space gardens? It sounds like science fiction, but it may very soon be science fact. On a recent airing of Weekend Edition on KPCC, Robert Bowman, a senior scientist with Lockheed Martin, spoke about just that. He is working with NASA’s Ames Research Center to build a little habitat to grow selected plants that include turnips and basil. The habitat is scheduled to fly to the moon on the Google XPrize Competitor that has a launch deadline of the end of 2015. Basil has been grown many times on the international space station, but one of the goals of this experiment is to show that crop plants, that would ultimately feed astronauts and colonists, are able to grow on the Moon. NASA recognizes the key to long term sustainability is access to locally grown food plants, and you can’t get more local than your own backyard. So with spring right around the corner it’s time to start thinking about starting a garden in your backyard. Tomatoes, basil, peppers, cucumbers, eggplant and zucchini are just a sample of what can be grown starting in the spring, through summer and into the fall. FIBROMYALGIA, UNRESOLVED CHRONIC PAIN, IBS, MIGRAINES, DIZZINESS, TREMORS & OTHER NEUROLOGICAL DISORDERS. An Interview with Dr. Gilbert Jaudy, DC FACFN, FABVR, FABCDD by Mike Bundrant It happens. Brain cells communicate with electrical impulses and anything electrical can misfire, especially when exposed to harmful substances. The human brain can even short circuit, as in the case of a seizure. When the mechanism goes wrong it changes the whole world for the sufferer and it seems that it can’t be turned off such as in Fibromyalgia, RSD, Dystonia, unresolved or unexplainable Chronic Pain Syndromes, Alzheimers and Parkinsons. What you may not realize is that so many of the chronic ailments that plague people today come from chronic misfiring of circuitry as the brain attempts to communicate with and regulate the other organs in the body. When the human wiring system is compromised, the human being compromised. Proper communication cannot occur and this is what leads to organs and tissue going haywire. The result? You name it: autoimmune disorders, organ failure, chronic pain, fatigue, weakness, vertigo, metabolic issues, etc… the list is endless. The chronic health issues of our time begin in the brain. This is why I have found the work of Dr. Gilbert Jaudy to be of such interest over the years. Having been a patient and interviewed many of his patients, I know Dr. Jaudy’s Functional Neurology treatments tap into something deeper than any other alternative health treatment. Here are some highlights from our recent conversation. HT: What makes Functional Neurology treatments different from conventional type of treatments, it all deals with the nervous system, right? Dr. Jaudy: Through Functional Neurology we are able to measure the efficiency of the neurological pathways that we affect. With our unique method of testing, we know when the healing has occurred and the pathways are clear. Functional Neurology treatment outcomes are measured by examination of function of the nervous system. The bottom line is the measurement of what was done. For instance if a random procedure or therapy is done and we are not able to measure neurologically what happened in the brain, then we are not able to tell if we were helpful. HT: How do you know the treatment is effective? Dr. Jaudy: We have several types of testing. We use specific computer equipment and specific testing equipment for example to monitor the dilation and reaction of pupils to light, either direct or indirect. We are able to measure different activities that give us immediate response to what the brain is doing. We use clinical methods which gives us the ability to see the how the nervous system recovers and how it responds to the application. We test, re-test, monitor, and measure before and after each treatment application. The control system — the nervous system — is the central organizing authority; measured by sophisticated Brain-Based Computerized Technology, including EEG, EMG, and autonomic nervous system responses and measurements. Nervous system function includes measurements and monitoring changes to the autonomic nervous system (your auto pilot) and somatic motor function before and after each application evaluating the end organ function. There are many measurable variables such as heart rate, respiration, motor output of muscles, EEG and EMG analysis, sensory testing, posture, neurological reflexes are used to determine if a functional loss is present. You can’t do that because the bottom line is you aren’t going to get the document. You’re going to get gibberish. But, if you focus on the layout shape, and purpose you are going to get the document you want. So if you don’t focus on the proper goal and function of the neurological pathways you aren’t going to get the result you want. It’s going to manifest in random output and not the result you desire and probably more aggravation of the problem.

A functional loss represents altered/impaired nervous system performance. If a functional loss is present, it is then determined WHERE the loss stems from, such as brain, cerebellum, peripheral nerves, etc. People tend to think the back, neck, joints, and limbs as separate body parts but they are absolutely connected and controlled by their neurological origin in the “central computer” which is the brain.

It’s because the brain is an electric generator and it generates electricity at the speed of light. The cells or receptors are electric receptors—how long does it take you when you go into your bedroom to get light from the switch?

HT: So, that’s how you get such profound results. You just keep working with the patient until you can measure the result you want. There is no guesswork involved.

Dr. Jaudy: Instant. And this is the speed that we can see the results. When receptors or cells in the brain connect and start talking to each other electricity comes back very quickly.

Dr. Jaudy: Yes. There is no “random” in Functional Neurology. There is no “let’s do this and then see if you feel better.” We know when we do an application and measure the outcome if we are on the right pathway, and if the patient will react favorably. The parameters that are assessed tell us if the patient is going to do well or not do well. The treatment is broken into phases and you are tested, pre-tested, and posttested as you go through many phases of applications in just one treatment session and each subsequent treatment application is dependent on the previous finding. That is how we get results in one to three visits. When patients comment it’s a miracle, it’s actually a clinical expectation. They say “Wow! I’ve only had one or two treatments” but it isn’t a quick fix, it’s a real fix. We have created neurogenesis or neuroplasticity, likened to a jump start on an internal connection in the brain which will reflect to the entire system at the speed of light. It keeps going. It is exponential.

Whereas before the chain is going to keep going and going until this organism, which is the human body, begins to disintegrate. It’s going to fall apart.

HT: Instant?

The falling apart for patients is very, very emotional. It can go on, before humans completely collapse, they can sometimes suffer for twenty, thirty, forty or fifty years. I see these cases daily in my practice. Symptoms are not solved when they are simply masked by medication and more times than not can actually increase or emerge in other areas. The modern neuroscience of Functional Neurology allows trained doctors to use targeted treatment applications which target specific neural pathways, called neural tracts. Patient-centered diagnoses are completely individualized and discovers the roots of your symptoms. Rather than labeling the sources of your symptoms with unknown or unexplained phenomena, a patientcentered diagnosis involves thorough and meticulous techniques that identify each of your symptoms systematically. The patient also sees the results for themselves, not only because the doctor shows them what is happening; but also, because the treatments produce noticeable, positive results. Treatment to the very neurological and physiological pathways that make function possible. It’s purely the neuroscience of the wiring and engineering of human bodies. If these facts of function of human life are not addressed then any disruption in the function and symptoms of a patient will not be uncovered; and they will remain a mystery to, not only the doctor, but the patient who suffers.

You can start with one condition then that migrates into two and then ten and then fifteen. Functional Neurology allows me to pinpoint the problem area.

HT: So, you can identify the areas in my brain that are misfiring and work on those areas so that chronic conditions resolve and the body can function properly again? Dr. Jaudy: Absolutely. Regardless of the condition you present with, the bottom line is symptoms can have no end. You can start with one condition then that migrates into two and then ten and then fifteen. As the brain and the other systems start compensating, you start having hidden complications and neurons come into play and you get a mess that is getting deeper and creating more complex neurological layers.

Functional Neurology allows me to pinpoint the problem area. If I have a problem in my frontal lobe it is going to affect one thing. If I have a problem in my frontal lobe and my parietal lobe it is going to affect another. If I have a problem in my frontal lobe and my parietal lobe and my basal ganglia, the structures in the brain, it is going to affect a different function. If I have lesions in two, or three, or four areas in my brain then I am going to create considerable disharmony which will create deficiencies in functions in the entire body; the nervous system, the joints, muscles, ligaments, our chemicals, the way we think, the way we walk. Everything will be affected. I don’t blame patients as most have seen 15-20 doctors and think “Oh this is another one of them, nothing is going to work for me because. I’ve tried everything under the sun, and I don’t know what this is going to do for me, I’m done.” That is not true. It is not reality. The patient needs to understand if the system is not re-wired properly the way it was designed to work, then the link has been missed, and the link can stay missing all your life. Let’s do an exam and find out what is happening so that you don’t have to suffer for the rest of your life. You don’t have to be crying, crippled, become demented, irritable, hyperactive, or have ailments the rest of your life with the clinical applications of BrainBased treatments in Functional Neurology. HT: That is where the healing begins. Dr. Jaudy: Absolutely, when you reconnect the wires and you start changing on the electrical level life comes back! And so you change also on the chemical and mechanical level. It’s a gift to humanity. It has to be done targeted. It has to be done specific. It has to be done with the highest standards of analysis. Controlling Elevated Cholesterol Without Prescription Drugs By Alexander Shikhman, M.D., Ph.D., FACR Cardiovascular disease, including coronary artery disease, atherosclerosis, cerebral vascular disease, cerebral vascular accident (stroke), myocardial infarction, sudden death syndrome, is the number one cause of death in most developed countries all over the world. Elevated circulating cholesterol levels, in particular low-density-lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-cholesterol) levels have been well established as one of the major risk factors for the development and progression of cardiovascular and cerebral vascular diseases, as have high levels of circulating lipids such as triglycerides. In addition, these subjects often also experience obesity, metabolic disorders (such as syndrome X and diabetes) and hyperlipidemia, which are all major subgroups of the population that are adversely affected by high cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Although advances have been made in treating cardiovascular disease and metabolic disorders associated with hyperlipidemia, hypercholesterolemia and the like, these conditions still are responsible for significant deterioration of the quality of life and risk of death for many patients. In many cases, medications used to treat these conditions are not well tolerated and have significant side effects. For example, the major drawback to the predominant statin or statin-like compounds is muscle soreness, muscle weakness, muscle tenderness, intense muscle pain (collectively known as statin-induced myopathy), peripheral neuropathy and extreme form of muscle damage called rhabdomylosis. Rhabdomylosis can be both a serious and a life threatening side effect clearly associated with the use of statin drugs where the muscle breakdown causes major organ damage to both the liver and kidney that has resulted in many reported deaths. Lipid levels can be lowered with a combination of diet, weight loss, exercise, and medications or appropriate food supplements. People with high cholesterol should make changes in their lifestyle by reducing total and saturated fat in the diet, reducing carbohydrate consumption, losing weight, performing aerobic exercise, and eating a diet rich in non-sweet fruits and vegetables. The appropriate lipid-lowering drug or food supplement therapy can be started at any time after diagnosing hyperlipidemia. There are several medications available to help lower elevated levels of cholesterol and triglycerides. These include: • Statins (lovastatin, pravastatin, simvastatin, fluvastatin, atorvastatin, and rosuvastatin) – are the most popular prescription drugs to control hyperlipidemia. They decrease the body’s production of cholesterol, reduce LDL and to a lesser degree triglyceride levels. However, taking statins is frequently associated with muscle pain and in rare cases severe muscle damage. • Ezetimibe (Zetia) the bile acid sequestrants (cholestyramine, colestipol, and colesevelam) - decreases the body's ability to absorb cholesterol from the digestive tract and lowers LDL levels. • Nicotinic acid (Niacin) - is a vitamin that is used to lower triglycerides. • Fibrates (gemfibrozil, fenofibrate and fenofibric acid) also lower triglyceride and raise HDL cholesterol levels. Consumption of lipid lowering drugs is frequently associated with side effects such as: • Elevation of liver enzymes • Muscle pain, cramps or even muscle damage • Nausea, vomiting, bloating and diarrhea • Facial flashing • Allergic reactions

Key Lab Tests That Can Help Prevent and Reverse Disease By Dr. Wes Youngberg When I was 24 years old I read the studies done by Drs. Brown and Goldsteine. They had just won the Nobel Prize in Medicine for their work showing how harmful cholesterol particles can enter the artery walls and cause plaque. So I took the initiative and got tested. Since I was very fit and careful with my diet, I was shocked to learn that I had very high LDL Cholesterol and Triglycerides. At first I was depressed but I quickly realized that I had been given a gift! A second- chance of- sorts. With this new awareness I could make the necessary changes now, well before any health problems developed. Everyone wants to be healthy but few of us recognize the underlying causes of our suboptimal health. A proper tune up requires that we first do the right blood tests. But when is the last time we took the time to get a comprehensive wellness evaluation? Blood tests are often the best and quickest way to assess our health and to help us stay motivated. Even the healthiest among us have “chinks in our armor” and can benefit from these objective lab tests. There are many tests available to those looking for a health tune up. Here are several tests that I usually recommend when initiating a wellness tune-up. 1) MTHFR test. No I’m not swearing at you. This could actually be the most important blood test of your life! It is the most significant scientific breakthrough resulting from the Human Genome Project completed in 2003. MTHFR is a blood test that tells us if we have a mutation in the gene and resulting enzyme that methylates, and therefore activates the vitamin Folate. Individuals with this mutation should avoid Folic Acid – the synthetic form of folate found in most multiple vitamins. This is also the most likely reason why studies are finding that multiple vitamin users may have higher risk of cancer and other diseases. Care should be taken to use only the best forms of nutritional supplements. About 40% of us have one copy of this mutation which results in a 30% decrease in our body’s ability to detoxify, repair DNA and suppress viruses. Having two copies creates up to 90% impairment. Because this mutation affects every cell and organ system it can be a hidden culprit in many health problem. There are five common variations of this mutation, each with it’s own easy to understand nutritional protocol that not only lowers health risk but actually produces a nutritional bypass of the mutation itself. This largely resolves the long- term health risk. My father was struggling with Congestive Heart Failure and autoimmune attacks on his blood platelets. Testing MTHFR uncovered a double mutation that once treated with the proper nutritional protocol dramatically improved his conditions within six weeks. The 2hr GTT is the best test to catch diabetes or prediabetes early. Nearly 50% of us between the ages of 40 and 59 already have diabetes or prediabetes. If you are older than 60, the odds you already have prediabetes is 66- 75%! Since 90% of us who already have prediabetes are completely unaware, it makes having high blood sugar and insulin levels one of the most under diagnosed health problems in America. A simple fasting blood sugar is not adequate since it’s the after meal blood sugars that account for the majority of risk. A 4- hr GTT would help determine adrenal fatigue and low blood sugar tendencies. These can be easily treated once properly understood. For over 20 years I have recommended this test to nearly every patient and believe that this is the most underutilized and most important parts of the “health tune up”. Abnormal GTT or insulin levels are a key cause of high blood pressure, plaque buildup, weight gain, infertility, headaches, dementia, as well as breast, prostate and colon cancers. Elevated insulin at 1 and 2 hours into the test is one of the earliest indicators assessing the risk of cancer initiation and promotion. The good news is that we can dramatically improve insulin levels in our blood with completely natural approaches. 3) A Functional Thyroid Panel includes TSH, Free T4, Free T3, Thyroid Antibodies, and Reverse T3. These tests provide clues about our metabolism and the health of every organ system in our body. Improperly evaluated, poor thyroid function can result in dry skin, fatigue, unhealthy nails and hair, cold feet or hands, headaches, depression, anxiety, insomnia, ADHD, allergies, chronic infections, weight gain, diabetes, constipation, high blood pressure, menstrual problems, etc. It is also important to recognize that a normal TSH doesn’t necessarily mean that there is optimal thyroid function. Most people do want to change things up, so how can we be more successful about achieving our goals? I believe that there are a few key things to consider when setting your goals for the year:

1. Make sure you are doing it for YOU, not for someone else. This is one of the most important factors you need to consider when evaluating how successful you can be. If you are pursuing a goal to please your spouse or because you think it’s what you should be doing, your chances of staying on track are decreased. The desire to make a change, whatever it is, has to come from deep inside you. What is it you’ve always wanted to accomplish? You need to visualize the goal then feel what it will be like when you achieve it. When you can do that, success is virtually inevitable! By investing time and/or money in ourselves we create a strong intention statement, which enormously increases our chance of success. You are worth it!

2. Ask for help either from a friend, family member or a professional. This is probably the most overlooked item on my list. We let fear, embarrassment, and our egos get in our way. This is called selfsabotage. When we include another person in our goal, it helps to keep us on track and accountable. This reduces the chance of self-sabotage. The commitment to a partner provides support plus makes the journey a lot more fun! 3. Get a game plan. If you were planning a vacation or a road trip, you would get together a plan, right? You would settle on a budget, choose a destination, pick dates, book travel arrangements, etc. The same thing needs to happen with any goal you set! Your goal needs to be S.M.A.R.T.- Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely! Write out all the steps you will need to take in order to achieve your goal. Solicit the help of your support person when doing this. 3. Focus on progress, not perfection. Even though we have a great plan, sometimes we can get off course. However, just because you slip up once or twice doesn’t mean you have to thrown in the towel! One greasy burger isn’t going to make you fat, just like one workout won’t make you skinny! Always track what went well, forgive yourself, and get

back on it the next day. No one achieves great things without a lot of mistakes along the way. As my mom would say, ”He who didn’t make mistakes, made nothing!” So always, always focus on your progress, not perfection. It’s time to challenge yourself and really reach your goals! Are You Juicing Responsibly? By Don Rogers, Owner of Juice It Up Murrieta Village Walk Plaza Well, quite honestly, it means you need to juice in a non–reckless way. You need to become aware of what you are doing when you juice and what impact it can have on the body. Unfortunately, there have been a lot of infomercials, books and other promotional tools which only purpose is to sell a juicer rather than to promote responsible juicing. These infomercials, as an example, make juicing look exciting and fun. To be quite honest, responsible juicing is boring and dull. The problem with the infomercials that make juicing exciting and fun is that their only purpose is to sell juicers. Not only is it their job to sell juice machines, but to sell as many as they can and as quick as they can. The result can be information that doesn't promote responsible juicing. Responsible juicing is important because when you juice, you are drinking concentrated nutrition. In a way, you are drinking a herbal concoction when you drink fresh juice. This is because herbal medicine works by providing your body with nutrition. It is the nutrition in the herbs that helps your body heal, recover and stay healthy. If you juice irresponsibly then you can potentially overwhelm your body with nutrition causing you to stimulate something in your body too much, feel not so good, create negative effects, etc. Nutrition is fuel for the body and it is said that the difference between medicine and poison is all in the dose. I know because I experienced this headache the first time I drank wheatgrass juice, as have many others. But I thought to myself — "What am I doing? A headache is a sign that I am drinking too much wheatgrass causing my body to detoxify faster than it is capable of eliminating the toxins. A headache is not what I want. I want to experience positive benefits, not negative." Ultimately, we want to become consciously aware of the power that the vegetables and fruits can and do have on our body. Certain vegetables can have profound affects. For example, celery is a natural diuretic as is parsley. Dandelion leaves really stimulate the liver. Beets can move your bowels in a way you never knew was possible. If you juice these and other vegetables or fruits in an irresponsible manner then you will be doing your body no favors and instead of experiencing the positive benefits, you will be experiencing negative benefits. Well, responsible juicing means you don't underestimate the power of the vegetables and fruits you juice. Vegetables and fruits seem so innocent, but always remember — the difference between poison and medicine is in the dose. While many that sell juicers and juice machine may make juicing sound exciting and a miracle cure for all that ails you, I could not, in good consciousness tell you this is the case. Egg Protein Powder

How does this compare to other sources of protein? A whole egg scores 100 BV and 1.00 PDCAAS. Beef scores 80 BV and .92 PDCAAS. And peanuts score 68 BV and .52 PDCAAS. Refer to the comparison table at the end of the article.

Egg protein powder is a great source if you can’t get to an actual egg. It is a complete source of protein, like whey. In fact, all BV measurements are based on it. Like I said earlier, it’s BV level is 100 and it’s PDCAAS is 1.0. That is a perfect score in the protein arena. The drawbacks with egg protein powder is the cholesterol level (unless you get egg white protein powder). Egg protein is highly allergenic, and it is a very expensive protein compared to whey concentrate or isolate.

Casein Protein Powder

Casein protein is the other protein in milk. It is a slow-digesting protein which some people prefer because it stays in their system longer. Because of the way casein is processed, it results in a slow-digestion, and steady release of amino acids. This is good when you’re in a more catabolic (muscle loss) state. Whey protein would be a better choice for a anabolic (muscle building) state, such as working out. Native casein, found in whole raw milk, is one of the best proteins for your muscles. However, there are some serious problems with casein protein. Most casein included in protein powders and drinks is ultra-thermolyzed. Because of this processing, the protein includes “putrid proteins” which are linked to cancer. Additionally, casein protein can be dangerous to those with kidney problems. A recent study showed that rats with kidney disease developed renal insufficiency with just 20% of casein protein in their diet. Casein protein has nitrogen byproducts which can exaserbate kidney damage. There is really not much reason to include casein protein powder in your diet. If you are doing dairy, drink a glass of whole, raw milk (or at least organic milk) to get the casein you want. You will probably not find unprocessed casein in a protein powder form.

Pea protein powder is created by drying, grinding and defatting a pea. It’s a decent alternative for vegetarians, but only contains three of the nine essential animo acids. It’s BV is pretty low at 65 and it’s PDCAAS is only 0.69. However, it does contain 30% of your daily dose of iron. Unless you are a vegan or allergic to dairy and eggs, pea protein is not the ideal choice.

Rice Protein Powder Rice protein is created by isolating the protein out of brown rice grain through an enzymatic process obtaining 85% – 91% of the protein. It contains all nine essential animo acids plus four times as more arginine than whey. Rice protein is a slow-digesting protein to give you an even energy level as well as allergen-friendly. Rice protein powder has a great concentration of protein and therefore is a great option for vegans. It scores 83 on the BV scale is a .47 on PDCAAS.

Hemp Protein Concentrate Powder Hemp protein concentrate is a complete food, but it lacks as a protein source. It only provides, at the most when processed, 50% protein. I new years resolution It’s Not Too Late to Choose Success with your Resolution By Jennifer McCormick We are a month into 2014 and how many New Year’s resolutions are still active? Many resolutions are important yet it is estimated that a small percentage of people - as few as 8% of those making a resolution - are successful. One of the difficulties with New Year’s resolutions lies in that we make a resolution to change some behavior, but we don't actually change our thoughts and beliefs. We are unaware of the thoughts and beliefs held in our subconscious mind that may sabotage our best efforts. Therefore, we don’t know why we continually face the same challenges. We feel we may lack willpower. We feel poorly about ourselves and wonder why we should continue constraining on ourselves if we are just going to fail anway. It is very easy to start that negative selftalk, isn’t it? We can realize success by creating a positive attitude, then establishing clear goals and planning each step. Then, realize that your words, thoughts, actions and the energy you put into every situation is a choice. You are an active participant. Again it’s that choice to act and to see things in a positive light that makes all the difference. The beliefs we have about ourselves and the behaviors that lead to our accomplishments can sabotage our efforts or empower us toward success. We have to believe our success is imminent. We must speak kindly of ourselves and treat ourselves with love if we are going to persevere through the difficult periods in achieving a desired outcome. When negative thoughts and old behaviors creep their way back into the foreground, catching yourself in the negative thought is the key. Where is the thought/emotion felt in your body? How does it make you feel? You have a choice to change those thoughts into positive loving affirmations. You are not restricted to negative thoughts and self-defeating behaviors. If you are having a hard time identifying what holds you back, you can gain awareness through hypnotherapy of what limits your opportunities and chips away at your confidence. We are all toxic! We are exposed to a barrage of chemicals and toxins on a daily basis from environmental pollutants to our household cleaning products, the foods we eat and the water we drink. Ideally, the body would get rid of these toxins through the organs of elimination: the liver, bowel, kidneys, lungs, and skin. However, many of us are not doing so optimally, as there are many factors affecting how well we excrete the toxins we are exposed to, including our genetics and the sheer volume of exposure. Nutrient-deficient diets and heavy consumption of processed foods can create further challenges. The liver is the main organ responsible for detoxification and must be supported to effectively perform its duties. Every drug, chemical, pesticide and hormone is metabolized by enzyme pathways in the liver. The liver processes toxins in two steps, phase one and phase two detoxification. In phase one, toxic substances are made water-soluble so they may be eliminated via the kidneys and intestines. In phase two, the toxin is bound to a carrier molecule to ensure it will not damage tissue while it is being excreted. Individual detoxification capabilities vary. “Environmental overload” or lack of nutrients to fuel detoxification pathways may prevent harmful substances from being excreted. This influences how we feel over time. Soy Protein Isolate Powder Soy protein isolate is a protein-rich powder extracted from the waste product of soy oil manufacturing. Even though soy protein isolate is widely used as a protein source, there are many dangers in consuming it. This is not only because soy is a GMO crop, but because of the way soy protein isolate is manufactured, which results in a variety of toxins. Consuming soy protein isolate can lead to mineral deficiency because of it’s high levels of phytic acid. Phytic acid blocks the uptake of essential minerals such as calcium, magnesium, copper, iron and zinc. Additionally soy protein powder includes toxins that are enzyme inhibitors which block the action of trypsin and other enzymes needed for protein digestion. Some soy protein powders are fermented to remove this toxin. However, fermentation also removes certain enzymes needed for digestion. Of course, for women especially, consuming soy can disrupt the normal functioning of endocrine glands that produce hormones because of it’s high phytoestrogen content. Even in men, soy protein can suppress the production of testosterone and reduce the sex drive. And if all that’s not bad enough, soy protein isolate contains aluminum and the toxin lysinoalinine. Because of this, the US Food and Drug Administration has chosen not to classify soy protein isolate as “generally recognized as safe” for use as a human food additive. So, now that you know the different types of protein, you should be able to determine which type of protein powder is best for you. Don’t forget, you can always use a blend of proteins to get exactly what you need.
