Zipline to the Campfire—Jesus N the Woods 2012
Work is Fun!
Thanks to the generosity of the David Weekley Family Foundation, 52 HFY youth went on retreat to Carolina Creek Christian Camp March 23-25. Dedicated volunteers ministered to the youth all weekend—including late nights! The girls discussed our standing in Christ, and our worth as daughters of God. Volunteer and HFY alumni Charde Jones shared an original poem (on our website) with the girls that applied the scriptures to contemporary dating relationships and encouraged the girls to settle for nothing less than a “man of God”. The guys were applying truth, whether on the zipline or taking time to pray to their Savior. Then, under a million stars at the campfire, many of the youth shared their real life stories of struggle and hope— and how God has been their Helper and Comfort.
Service projects have always been part of HFY. The youth not only enjoy them, but they need to serve to mature as people and Christians. A very energetic group of youth and volunteers (including the Veritas class from Houston’s First Baptist) worked at an old church to prepare it for future ministry. They removed bushes and trees, cleaned out a garage, scoured two bathrooms and made the nursery shine!
Jesus N The ‘Hood—“I am a Friend of God”—June 18-22, 2012 We are anticipating up to 200 teenagers to come to JNTH! I grew up in a Christian home where we went to Church every Sunday and to Bible Study every Wednesday. I dedicated my life to Christ when I was 16 or 17. I've always followed Him and believed in Him. But I really didn’t know much about Him until I started attending HFY. Hope For Youth impacted my life in a big way. If it wasn’t for HFY I don’t know where I would be today. The volunteers showed me that there are more people out there who care for me besides my family. And they showed me that the only way through life is to believe in myself and in GOD. Since graduating from high school, I have worked for a non-profit organization called The Forge For Families that works with low-income families in the Third Ward area. I am a lead teacher for their After-School Program, working with 4-7 year olds from different schools. I also work for City of Refuge Evangelical Church in the nursery as a Floor Manager on Sundays. I have been married to Derrick Jones for almost a year now! I volunteer at HFY (my big responsibility is driving the HFY van) because I know what the kids are going through--I've been in their shoes. HFY helped me get through it and now I’m going to help this group of kids!
Ellis Scott—pictured at Friday Night Live I trusted Christ as my savior on June 22, 2000 at Good News Church when I was about 12 years old. When I heard about HFY, I started coming for the food—the physical food and the spiritual food! At HFY I met men of God—volunteers—who were living out the gospel. I didn’t even know that people like that existed. They became my role models, and I thank God for them. I’m currently studying accounting at the University of Houston. I am also the Young Adult Ministry Leader at The Church Without Walls, where I have the privilege to preach to the men’s group and lead a Bible study. I volunteer with Hope For Youth because I want to be a role model for young men, like those volunteers were for me when I was a teenager.
Volunteers: We thank our God in all our remembrance of you (Phil. 1:3-5) Nicole
