takahiro kimura Takahiro Kimura was born in Tokyo, Japan, in 1965. He first studied technology of painting and graphic design at Salesian Polytechnic, and then moved on to Setsu Mode Seminar to learn the skill of drawing, landscape painting and fashion drawing. Since 1991, Takahiro Kimura has been creating his own unique style of collages which strive  to show the complicated nature of the human spirit through peculiar physical distortions. He makes his collages by cutting up photos and assembling them into formations to which color is then applied, thereby creating a whole new visage with an unforgettable impact. [The faces] Takahiro Kimura draws depict in a formidably conspicuous way  the  karmic suffering and ugliness of a human being. For this reason, the works feel somewhat lonely even though they are drawn with dazzlingly brilliant colors. Consequently, his paintings burn unforgettably intense impressions to the consciousnesses of people who’ve seen them. In his career so far Kimura has created a broad spectrum of works, including illustrations for advertisements; books, exhibitions of his original works, and even a live painting demonstration in which a gigantic face was created on a canvas. Since 2003, Kimura has evolved his interest in faces, producing a collaged animation series which breathed new life into the hallucinatory, constantly mutating movements that emerge out of every single drawing. His first art book [e-motion], published in 2010, has 10 collaged animation series. He also made a short-film titled [meat], which was screened at many occassions, including

6

Annecy Animation Film Festival (2010,France), MECAL(2011,Spain), Wiesbaden International Weekend of Animation(2010,Germany), and Short Shorts Film Festival (2011,Japan). Kimura’s animation series includes a virtual company called [KIMSNAKE], in which many characters with strong personalities sing and dance. These have also been introduced in TV and on a website. www.faceful.jp

SAKIROO

30

Sakiroo (real name Sang-Hyun Choi), works as a character designer in South Korea. Before turning 20, he hadn’t had any specific professional dreams and hadn’t studied any form of art or painting, but he knew he wanted to be different from the norm. So, with a goal to become a thoughtful artist with a collection of inspiring and special images, he started drawing

characters. For Sakiroo, art has become a burning passion that motivates and gives him energy. He is now in a leading position at Adobe Creative, and performs as a freelancer for his own company project Sakiroo Pictures. His characters have appeared on, for instance, MTV Korea.  Through his work he hopes to share a lot of

knowledge and develop new trends, all the while interacting with people from around the world in order to create even greater designs!

HELENA SANDERS Born in the wilds of Austin, Texas and raised in the lowlands of North Carolina, Helena Sanders claims a Bachelors of Science in Visual Arts (Painting & Fiber Arts) from Skidmore College in upstate New York. But a degree from an outstanding liberal arts school didn’t do much to keep her on the straight and narrow. She spent the following years moving around the United States, collaborating with various mad scientists, noise musicians, touring side-show acts, and anarchist community groups. Now living in Amsterdam, Helena’s arts practice continues to investigate the ‘grey areas’ (a misnomer if there ever was one) where borders overlap - borders between cultures, between human and non-human, poisons and cures, myth and reality. Characterized by saturated colors, semi-abstracted forms, furious mark-making, and old-time craft methods, her drawings and installations bring to light the chaos and confusion, but also the beauty and complexity in these borderlands, while trying to create new mythologies to serve a transient and global community that has no use for borders at all. Amsterdam has been home to Helena Sanders for 2 years now, and she continues to make site-specific installations, large-scale drawings & paintings, and collaborates with various musicians, writers, and performers in area, working from an atelier in de Binnenpret. www.helenasanders.com

Daniel Jimenez van Wageningen Since the beginning of his artistic development, Daniel has been interested in creating imagery That renders conscious and subconscious processes, which take place in his own mind. Initially, the directest way for him to achieve this was through surrealism. After having spent years in Academies and artists’ studios studying and developing his work, he broadened his “visual vocabulary” and found his own styles and techniques. The academic years also allowed him to develop a way of understanding and selecting the mental processes, which he personifies in his works. Certain factors are quite constant in Daniel’s works: they tend to be related To themes or interests, he developed in his childhood. One of these interests has been science. He used to spend hours on end in his free time looking at different colors, structures, and textures in various materials and substances, through the lens of a microscope. This has subtly shone through in some of his works, which have a scientific tone to them, a tone that has over the years Fluctuated back and forth, depending on the subject matter of the series he is delving himself into. Another element quite constantly presented is one, which derives from finding images he can relate to. These images are then rendered into drawings or paintings in a way in which they become more personal and therefore closer to him than to the original source. In the past years, Daniel has touched several interesting themes in his works. In the series “Handboek voor de Soldaat: 1978” (“Handbook for the Soldier: 1978) he interprets images from old instructional manuals for the Dutch army and makes them into silk prints, drawings and paintings. Inspiration for this came

54

from the desire to relate to and confront himself with his experience of growing up in a violent and almost militarized state of his motherland. Another ongoing series Daniel has recently been working on is “Fragmentation and Organic Masses” in which he deals with themes such as his own near-death experience as a fetus, and works with color fragmentation as a technique. This series consists of various paintings and drawings, which have, in their own way, evolved and paved way for a new series to branch out and come into existence in the future. Presently, Daniel is working on a series of illustrations and drawings called “Mind the Mask.” This series introduces us to the events taking place in his mind through the characterization of parts of his psyche as masked beings. These beings are there to not only represent parts of Daniel’s mind, but to also interact with each other and to start “living a life of their own.” Experimenting with the masked beings and their world brings Daniel into a mental cycle. In this process he digs into his mind in order to constantly feed more possibilities into the world which now exists outside himself. By doing so, he is able to have insights in the processes within himself. Consequently, this self-analysis leads to changes in the world he is representing in his illustrations. All this to form a constant need for visual output and introspective analysis. for visual output and introspective analysis.

PV PV is the pseudonym for Pietro Vanessi, a communication professional, born in Verona in 1964, and an inhabitant of Rome since 2001. For several years now, PV has dedicated himself to drawing cartoons for magazines, from the famous Italian comics-magazine “Cuore” to several local newspapers. He left the communication scene for 7 or 8 years and has been active in the field of advertising since 2006, a road which began thanks to his work on the blog www.unavignetta.splinder.com. This blog is a channel through which he creates cartoons and sarcastic comics on various topics of daily life. In the world of PV, there is space to talk about philosophy, society and relationships from a bittersweet  point of view, a “desperate existential disillusioned” perspective that can  at times be presented as a pro-misogynist joke or a nihilistic thought, in order to just rip off a smile. PV has participated in a TV show called “Spettacolando” on the Italian TV Rai 2, and he’s put up several solo shows in Napoli, Rome, and Sulmona in 2007-2009. Most recently, some of the blog’s fans have asked him to translate the  satirical comics into  other languages.  Therefore,  new  versions of the blog have been created:  USA (www.comicsbypv.com) URSS (www.diary.ru/~pvcomics) FRA (www.ledessindepv.blogspot.com) L’Albero delle Donne   Beta Edition- Rome “RIDI, RIDI…” January 2009 “Donne e danni… collaterali”  Arphanet – Milano “Viva l’ItaGlia” CentoAutori - Napoli

DIDIER PARE Quebec born artist and music lover, Didier Pare, has forever been extremely sensitive to his immediate environment and in-tune with its colors and sounds all his life, but it was not until he began his formal collegiate studies that he became aware of his own person and how that has influenced him throughout his life. While studying, he discovered new techniques of communicating his own emotions on canvas that in the past he had never quite been able to artistically capture. A few years later, destiny permitted him to meet up and spend considerable time with none other than François Trottier, a well known international artist who inspired him to engage the artist’s world of personalizing these feelings and vision to canvas so that the observer is an active participant in the translation and not lost in it. Through Trottier’s tutorage and guidance, Didier then permitted himself to play with the various tools of the master’s craft -- spatulas, trowels, acrylic paint, oil paint, charcoal pencil, Indian ink, gouache, and other such mediums -- that transpose an artist’s emotions and feelings at a particular instant in time to the ‘fixed medium’ of the canvas where the story is told anew with each viewer. Didier has also become more sensitive to his immediate environment even more since he has begun traveling beyond his native borders. This mobility has favored his work tremendously with the discovery of a wide diversity of cultures within which he finds infinite nuances of colors and reflects them in each of his pieces.  Sometimes travel is just ‘up’ and one can easily feel and

76

share along with the artist’s feelings of power and strength in the blues of the open sky during his first parachute jump. Sensitive and yet unprompted, Didier willingly shares with his public his artistic discoveries as they unfold for him. His artistic reputation is found in the detail of colors, mediums and materials that glimpse into his imaginary and emotional world. He effectively communicates his true personality thru the artist’s eye to the canvas.

dave rock in real Born in Taranto in 1980, soon he begins to express his ideas and feelings in art. Trattopen and Bic, two pen’s brand, become faithful travelling companions. The passion for music, cinema and visual communication, led him at the age of 19, to move to Perugia to study advertising techniques. However, he doesn’t choose for an Art Academy, he is self-taught. He digs into different subjects and develops his skills in printing, digital illustration, graphic, and web design. This background allows him to match love, work, and study for a long time. He is currently busy with different projects, from illustration to accessories design for toys. Drawing is still what he mainly daily does, a spontaneous tendency to stay in peace with the world. “It is the hidden corner of the day when I get in touch with myself in a profound way. It’s my space, where freedom is guaranteed: my only weapon is my pen, as the good Sly once said”. www.daverockinreal.com
