CENTRE NEWS This summer has certainly been one out of the bag for most of our community—I haven’t been hearing too many complaints. The generous and regular rainfalls have kept most farms, orchards, gardens and lifestyle blocks in relatively lush condition for the time of year. Even the holiday makers were blessed with some fairly good camping and boating weather through the early summer at least. Sadly, the weather did cause the cancellation of the inaugural Mangakahia Axemen’s Carnival/Community Gala last month which was a disappointment to many and particularly those who had spent many hours in preparation for the event. Hook’N’Bang event preparations have begun for May 17th to 19th, and there will be more information available when confirmed. Keep an eye on the Hook’N’Bang facebook page to keep up to date. Another call goes out for Livestock Scheme contributors. The scheme numbers are looking a little down this coming year so if you are able to support it in any way—by donating or grazing an animal—please let us know. You will find in this newsletter that winter sports are getting underway with each affiliate adding their story. And you can see the lovely fresh space in this photo—the upstairs community lounge, kitchen and bar - which offers a very pleasant area to host events and visit generally .

MANGAKAHIA RUGBY
The 10-Aside Tournament held on the 17th of February was a great success for the club. We had 4 teams take part and all teams had 4 games. The overall winner was a combination team made up of League and Union players. Well done guys. All teams played with great spirit wrapping up with Prize-giving, a few drinks and plenty of food. Big thanks to the organisers and Tyre-power Whangarei for their sponsorship. Seniors are still requiring players. Training is 6.30pm Wednesdays, just one night a week . We need your support even if you can only play a few games , but training is a must. Junior Rally is Saturday March 17th at the complex . Graeme Dickeson 0276875363
MANGAKAHIA LIONS CLUB Our Club ended the year with a very enjoyable Senior Citizens lunch when we catered for about 120 70+- year-old residents and ex-residents from our district. We also had a very successful Country Meal. A great crowd for the children’s party. Our restoration of the Memorial Church is well under way (see pictures below). As with all renovations one finds parts that need replacing that were not in the original estimate. A lot of time, finance and effort have gone into this project but the end is in sight. Once again, a big thankyou to the community for their support. In April we will be holding our mixed golf tournament at Sherwood Park. Meantime its back to planning future projects that will benefit our community. President Duncan Worthington

MANGAKAHIA SQUASH The 2018 season had a sweet start, with the first round beginning on 14th February (apologies to all partners who were expecting a romantic dinner out for Valentine’s Day). A good number of players all looking to sweat out their over indulgence during the holiday period. Our inter-house is being played on a Wednesday night and we are pleased to welcome a number of new faces to the club this year as well as our returning members. It is shaping up to be a great year for Squash, with so many keen to get started before winter has even begun! Make sure you save these dates: Mangakahia Open Squash Tournament 4-6th May Mangakahia Juniors Tournament 8-10th June Junior Squash will start again in Term 2, Monday 30th April from 3:00pm – 5:00pm. All children Primary, Intermediate and High School age are welcome. Please contact Wayne for more information. If you are looking for something new in 2018 why not give Squash a go? It is a great workout (indoors so you won’t get wet) and it is also very social, with players enjoying a drink after the game and a good yarn.

MANGAKAHIA GARDEN CLUB Wow what a summer! My garden at the moment looks like an overgrown jungle. The kikuyu has been vigorous beyond belief. First things first. The results of the potato competition. Thirty-five of our members took a bucket and a potato last September. Twenty-two members weighed in their crops in early December. The greatest yield was Jenny Chapman, smallest yield Jill Gibb—this was by weight. Most potatoes grown Jeanette Brown. The competition was fierce and fun. As a result, we are going to repeat this competition again next spring. REMINDER The wins in my garden this summer have been the heirloom tomatoes - I got nine precious seeds from Jill Ruddell at our garden clubs seed swap last March. I have had an outstanding crop of large fleshy tomatoes with a delicious flavour. This reinforces the benefits of sharing and saving seeds among local gardeners. Autumn at Garden Club is spent visiting gardens around the greater Whangarei area and wandering through members gardens collecting cuttings for propagation. Mangakahia Garden Club meets at the Mangakahia Community and Sports Complex on the 2nd Thursday of the month. All Welcome.
