MANGAKAHIA LIONS CLUB

On Wednesday 22nd June, Mangakahia Lions began their new year with the Change of Officers Ceremony and Dinner at The Old Parakao Store Café. 2021/22 President, George Radich handed over the reins to new President, Rob Soar. The evening was officiated by Lion Fred Field.

In the 2 months since then our Lions Members have been very active and busy in the local and wider community working on projects such as Citrus For The South, when we gathered 60 banana boxes of citrus fruit to send to needy people in the South Island. Our big project running at the same time was supporting the two Zonta Clubs in Whangarei by collecting, setting up, sorting and recycling the thousands of books for the annual Zonta Book Sale. This was again a very successful event raising funds for future community projects and organisations.

Recently a small committee of members has organised and run the Zone 2 Whangarei Lions, Young Ambassadors Awards for 17, 18 & 19 year old Youths to develop and reward their involvement in leadership and community service. Study Awards for 1st - $1.000, 2nd - $300 & 3rd - $200 were given to the winners.

Our Club also recently enjoyed a night of 10 Pin Bowls and dinner at Lonestar Restaurant with wives and partners. Members and wives and partners wore wigs for “Wiggy Wednesday” and through donations on the night raised funds for Child Cancer.

The Club continues to be very active where needed in the community with firewood working bees coming up. We welcome help at working bees to assist our fundraising projects and would welcome new members to join our Club.

MANGAKAHIA RUGBY CLUB

JMB Prizegiving was held across three nights [31 August - 02 September]. There were a number of trophies presented as well as medals for our rippa grade.

We also had the pleasure of club president, Ian Leeuwenberg present two special trophies. The first was for Team of the Year and this year it was awarded to the u13 team for their tenacity, committment and mana during the season.

The second was the Presidents Trophy. This year it was awarded to Hayley Taylor for her amazing contribution to the rugby committee as well as in her coaching position and touch rugby co-ordination.

This is also the last season for Kylie Livingstone as the junior rugby co-ordinator. After a number of seasons in this role, the torch has been handed over to three very capable ladies; Anne-Marie Kelly, Sarah Drinnan and Tania Barrell.

Lastly, thank you to our rugby club team sponsors! We appreciate your continued support towards our club and our players. Special mention to our major club sponsor Tyrepower for their generous prizegiving gift to all our JMB players.

MANGAKAHIA SQUASH CLUB

Mangakahia Squash is gearing up for the Club champs beginning mid September with the finals being played on Friday 23rd September. Come along and support the players, there should be some great matches to watch.

6 junior members of the Mangakahia Squash Club head away to AIMS games being held in Tauranga. They will participate in a week-long tournament playing year 7/8 students from all around the country. They will be representing their respective schools; Maungatapere and Kokopu for this event, we wish them all the best for their tournament. They would like to acknowledge and thank RayWhite “we can help with that” funding grant that they were given to help them pay for their accommodation.

Congratulations to Miranda Harrison who won the Northland Women’s Masters title recently.

Mikayla Carroll who won the Northland Intermediate girls champion title, with Nicole Ruddell placed 3rd.

Joe Taylor placed 3rd in the Boys competition.

With summer on its way Squash will start to wind down. It’s a great time for anyone interested to come along and have a go. There will be one last round running after the Club champs and people willing to give anyone who is keen a “hit”.

Contact Wayne or Hayley below for more details, or come down on a Wednesday or Thursday and check it out.
