MANGAKAHIA GARDENING CLUB 2021 has begun with water roulette, with most properties getting welcome rain. It is hard to imagine Whatitiri getting 180mls! Regardless, gardens are still bright and cheerful with the autumn blooms starting, notably the Dahlias which are well suited to Northland’s drier conditions.

December was an active month with our Xmas lunch and activities. It

included our annual collection for the Food Bank and Womens Refuge. This was followed with a garden visit to Cherie Goulays commercial flower and foliage business which was stunning. On December 13th we held our annual potato weigh in. Congratulations to the winner, Jenny Chapman, for growing 880gms of potatoes in her bucket. With such an unusually dry spring a very good yield. The fresh potatoes were added to our Food Bank donations.

February will be a busy month. After lunch at the 11th Feb meeting there

will be a garden visit to Catherine Davies -Colley’s garden. Most know this as a winter Magnolia garden, however the summer garden is a complete contrast of amazing plants and colours. This will be followed by a visit to Joe Oxford’s subtropical garden. Joe has developed this garden on a Kara rolling clay hillside and is a credit to this young man. This is an evolving garden and will be worth visiting many times in the future. Feb 27th is the Mangakahia Summer Festival at the Sports Complex. Gardening Club are supporting this with a White Elephant Gardening Stall. There will be many different treasures to be found here.

March 11th meeting will start at 11 am at the Mangakahia Community

Sports & Recreation Centre . Following lunch we plan to visit two very different town gardens - Margaret Slatter’s new subdivison garden and Janice Martin’s older garden that is surrounded by a native bush reserve.

MANGAKAHIA LIONS CLUB

Our club has been a consistent supporter of the Mangakahia Sports Complex, some say that without the input of the club back in the day it would not have been built. As a club we have taken on many tasks over the years for the betterment of the Complex including planting, pathway making, fencing, painting, and recently the provision of an AED. We are also going to fund an internal WiFi setup so that the hall is easier to use for gatherings that require the use of a PowerPoint display etc. Our most recent contribution has been the installation of a concrete picnic table next to the children’s playground that the complex committee recently installed. Lion Royce Kokich initiated the project and manged the procurement and installation of the table, paid for from the sale of firewood last summer. Lions Royce, Rob Soar, Ian McBeth, Bill Pedersen and Bruce McPherson did the installation.

All enquiries please contact m.eagles@xtra.co.nz

MANGAKAHIA RUGBY CLUB Welcome to the 2021 Rugby season! Planning is already underway for our Junior rugby season with our rally night booked for Thursday 11 March 2021 from 4.30pm onwards upstairs at the complex. This year the junior season will kick off on Saturday 08 May 2021 and run for 14 weeks. I’m sure we are all looking forward to a full season! Keep an eye out on our Mangakahia Rugby Facebook page for more information. We have two junior grades and one IMB grade participating in an all-day Sevens Tournament at Pohe Island on 20 February 2021. If you are keen to watch some rugby action, make sure to come down and support our players. The rugby club recently received funding from two grant applications, Oxford Trust and Pub Charity. The Oxford Trust application has enabled us to source a great speaker for this years’ Annual rugby fundraising which will be held on Friday 28 May 2021. The Pub Charity funding has enabled the club to replace existing training equipment, purchase new playing jerseys and other essentials for the season.
