Application for Summer Research Funding Opportunities OSU Undergraduate Research Office – URO Summer Research Fellowships University Honors & Scholars – Summer Research Scholarships College of Biological Sciences – Mayers Summer Research Scholarships

Summer Quarter 2009 The Undergraduate Research Office, University Honors and Scholars, and the College of Biological Sciences are very pleased to offer students the chance to apply for three Summer Research Awards: The URO Summer Research Fellowships, Honors and Scholars Summer Research Scholarships, and the Mayers Summer Research Scholarships. These awards provide students with $3,500 with the expectation that students will commit to spending 40-hours per week over 10 weeks doing research during Summer Quarter, 2009. Since these awards are in the form of financial scholarships, students must register for a minimum of 1 credit hour in Summer Quarter, 2009, if they receive an award. These scholarships are intended for students who are not receiving research funding from other sources. Students working with human or animal subjects may need approval of their research design from the Institutional Review Board (IRB) and should have this IRB approval before the start of Summer Quarter, 2009, so that their research work is not delayed. Because extensive faculty supervision is expected, applicants will need the collaboration of a committed faculty mentor who will also serve as the adviser for the project. Additional criteria for each scholarship are explained below in the individual scholarship descriptions. Students should use this application to apply for any or all three summer funding opportunities. Please carefully review the eligibility requirements for each and indicate those for which you would like to be considered. Students may be considered for all of these scholarships, however, students will only be considered for funding for which they meet the criteria and indicate a preference on the application.

Undergraduate Research Office – URO Summer Research Fellowships The purpose of the URO Summer Research Fellowships is to provide highly motivated students in any field of study with the opportunity to carry out an independent research project with an OSU faculty member. The award will be distributed in two parts: $3,000 will be dispersed at the start of Summer Quarter, and $500 will be awarded upon submission of a status report at the end of Summer Quarter. Fellowship recipients will be expected to present their work at the 2009 Fall Undergraduate Research Day (October 18) and at the 2010 Denman Undergraduate Research Forum in May. To be eligible, applicants must be making adequate progress towards a major and be enrolled as an Ohio State student during Spring and Autumn Quarter, 2009. Applicants may be Honors students, but this is not a requirement. Selection will be based upon the quality of the student’s application materials and academic potential. Preference will be given to students who have not yet had a chance to be involved in a summer research experience and who plan to complete a thesis to graduate with distinction and/or apply for graduate or professional school after completing their undergraduate degree. Sophomores and juniors are especially encouraged to apply.

University Honors & Scholars – Summer Research Scholarships The purpose of the University Honors & Scholars Summer Research Scholarships is to provide especially promising candidates for graduation with distinction the opportunity to enhance significantly the quality of their Senior Honors Research and Thesis Projects. A report on the progress of the project is required by the first day of Autumn Quarter. Scholarship recipients will be expected to present their work at the 2010 Denman Undergraduate Research Forum in May. To be eligible, applicants must be members of an honors program and be approved for candidacy for graduation with distinction during the 2009-2010 or 2010-2011 academic year. Selection will be made in consultation with University-wide faculty and will be based upon the quality of the research proposal, the student's academic performance and promise, a faculty member recommendation, and the faculty project adviser's statement regarding the structure and substance of his/her plans for the applicant's summer research experience and Senior Honors Research and Thesis Project. College of Biological Sciences – Mayers Summer Research Scholarships The purpose of the Mayers Summer Research Scholarships is to provide especially promising students majoring in Biochemistry, Biology, Entomology, Evolution and Ecology, Microbiology, Molecular Genetics, Plant Biology or Zoology the opportunity to enhance significantly the quality of their Senior Honors Research and Thesis Projects. A report on the progress of the project is required by the first day of Autumn Quarter. Scholarship recipients will be required to present their work at a departmental colloquium in Spring, 2010. To be eligible, applicants must be making adequate progress towards a major in the College of Biological Sciences and be planning to graduate with distinction during the 2009-2010 or 2010-2011 academic year. Selection will be made in consultation with College of Biological Sciences faculty and will be based upon the quality of the research proposal, the student's academic performance and promise, the faculty member recommendation, and the faculty project adviser's statement regarding the structure and substance of his/her plans for the applicant's summer research experience and Senior Honors Research and Thesis Project. _________________________________________________________________________________________ _ Application Due Date: Friday, March 13, 2009 by 5:00pm Letters of recommendation are also due on March 13 by 5:00pm.
