Dear Parent/Carer

September 2011

I trust you, your families and friends have all had an enjoyable summer, and a restful break if you’ve been able to take one. It is wonderful to see the students back in school, refreshed and ready for the new school year. During the holidays, when the buildings are empty of children, one school can easily feel very much like another. But it is, of course, the people of Honley High who make it so special, and it’s great to have the school buzzing with activity and purpose once again. You will know by now, I’m sure, that for the second year in a row this summer’s examination results were once again the best in the school’s 79 year history. 82% of our year 11 students achieved at least five higher (A*-C) grades and 73.5% including English and mathematics – outperforming targets and expectations. There were some stunning individual performances, with some students achieving up to 12 A* grades, but across the board performances were very pleasing with over half of our year 11 students getting an A or A*, almost a quarter of all grades at A* or A, 96% getting at least five passes and every single Honley student gaining at least one pass. The school buildings have had some classroom and other refurbishment over the summer break and some of the learning spaces that had become a little “tired” have had an excellent and much needed facelift. We have also welcomed some new colleagues to the teaching staff this September: Ms MacLeod in science, Ms Gorski in English, Mr Sellars in music, Mr Rehman in ICT, Mr Sladdin in maths. We also welcomed Ms Ratcliffe to the technicians’ team (food/textiles) and Ms Thompson as school sports coordinator. Our aspirations for the school over this next period in its development are to continue to develop learning and teaching so everyone makes outstanding progress, and to develop our communications practice so that everyone connected with Honley High feels pride in, and affiliation to the school. Your views will be important in that journey and we will be seeking them in a variety of ways. As part of that process I shall be holding a “surgery” for parents from th rd th st th th 4-5pm on the following Wednesdays: 5 October, 23 November, 25 January, 21 March, 9 May, 4 July to listen to ideas and suggestions for improving the school and improving outcomes for children. If you wish to make an appointment for one of these dates, please contact my PA Susan Genoves at school. We will also be contacting you soon to confirm your email addresses to ensure each parent/carer has access to Insight – our parental portal which enables you to track the progress of your child in school. Please note also that the Governing Body have agreed an attendance policy for Honley which incorporates more explicit guidance and procedures for parents regarding requests for holidays during term time. The relevant appendix of the policy and the application form for requesting leave of absence for a student can be downloaded from our website and are available in hard copy from the school. Please note that no term-time holiday absence will be authorised unless there are truly exceptional circumstances. Good attendance and punctuality are crucial to a child or young person’s future prospects, and the bedrock of progress. It only remains for me to wish you the very best for this autumn term, and to ask all parents and carers to support the school and its activities throughout the year as we maintain our absolute focus on providing the best possible education for our children and young people. Please take a moment to note the dates on the list overleaf that may affect you; I look forward to meeting many of you over the next twelve months. With my very best wishes, Yours sincerely

C Q SYLGE Headteacher
