A LITTLE BOOK of

PROPER FOOD

IT ALL STARTED IN MY KITCHEN In 2002, my dog Mosi had food-related health issues — I started home cooking for him and loved the results, but ended up with a very messy kitchen! I couldn’t find a healthy, all-natural food that was convenient to make, so I decided to create a dehydrated pet food, using real whole foods, myself! I began to offer the food to friends and other local people and their dogs. The food spoke for itself in the way it tasted and the health benefits it yielded. And that’s how The Honest Kitchen began. From there we grew dramatically through word of mouth at dog parks and in online forums — one shiny dog at a time — something that remains at the core of our success today.

We always try to raise the bar when choosing our raw ingredients.

making “proper” food means using the

VERY BEST INGREDIENTS

We respect our planet by choosing organic ingredients whenever we can, and always choose sustainability over cost — like our free range chicken, line caught wild haddock, fair-trade quinoa, non-GMO produce and recyclable, compostable BPA-free packaging.

The taste, of course, is very important. There’s nothing in our foods that we can’t eat ourselves, so we figure, ‘why not?!’

We believe pets deserve the highest quality foods, and that means nothing that’s ‘feed’ grade, or deemed unsuitable for human consumption. We use only 100% human grade ingredients from suppliers we know and trust. We’re foodies (as well as animal lovers) and love to make product development and ingredient purchasing a truly sensory process. It takes more than good ingredients to make a finished product that’s truly human grade. Our foods are actually produced in a facility that also makes ‘people foods’, like bakery and pancake mixes, breakfast cereals and the like (but no other products for pets). Overall, you’ll find a much higher quality standard in human food production – it’s all hair nets, white coats and stainless steel equipment. Cleanliness standards are higher of course, and the record keeping for safety purposes is far more detailed. Our plant is run by some passionate food production professionals, (with an Honest Kitchen staff member on site!) And we think it ensures the highest possible quality standards, to have a human food manufacturer make our foods.

Proper food means doing as little as possible to the ingredients that nature provides! Dehydration just removes the moisture from fresh ingredients. It’s an ancient method of naturally preserving foods without the need for chemical preservatives or irradiation. When our fruits and vegetables are just at the point of being perfectly ripe, they’re carefully harvested, then washed and diced up to make sure they’re really easy to digest. Our meats, eggs, leafy greens and fish are gently steamed to help eliminate pathogens, without irradiation. When a recipe calls for potatoes or grains, those are flash-heated to help break down the cellulose, to aid digestion. Our grains are always organic, whole and rolled. Potatoes are flaked, and used in moderation.

This might be the most important thing we say in this little book. Dehydration is so gentle, it actually protects the natural pigments (phytonutrients) in our fresh ingredients, SO THEY STAY VIBRANT AND COLORFUL. Have a look at old-fashioned pet food like kibble – it mostly turns brown from all the high heat processing. In colorful dehydrated food, the phytonutrients remain. These amazing compounds not only keep the ingredients looking pretty, they also have important antioxidant benefits, too! We think phytonutrient research is one of the most exciting areas of nutrition research going on in the world today, and it’s exploring the role these antioxidants play in protecting against free radical damage, supporting cell communication, eye and heart health, joint function, and loads of other processes that take place in our pets’ marvelous, gorgeous bodies!
