Discover Medfield History Day visits State Hospital

There is little time left to purchase tickets for Discover Medfield History Day trolley tours on Saturday, June 8. The annual event is sponsored by MEMO, the Medfield Employers and Merchants Organization, in cooperation with Town Historian Richard DeSorgher and sponsorships from MEMO members that underwrite the costs. Richard has chosen the theme: “Remember Us, For We Too Have Loved, Lived and Laughed: A History of the Medfield State

Come in to try our

Hospital Cemeteries.”

Tickets for any of the five identical tours are being sold at Medfield Properties on North St. Tickets are $9 for adults and $6 for seniors and children younger than 12. Because of the walking component included in this year’s tour, the number has been reduced from six hourly rides to five and the accessible trolley, for persons with mobility problems, accommodates only 34 riders instead of the usual 44. Tickets must be

purchased for one of the timed tours and residents are reminded that many tours have sold out in past years.

Many of the 1,300 deceased residents, without family, from the state hospital were buried in one of two locations in Medfield. After its opening in 1896, through 1918, people were laid to rest in Vine Lake Cemetery on a hill opposite the pond. When the town cemetery

outgrew its demand by influenza victims both in the town and the hospital, a state cemetery was made available along the Charles River by the hospital (just off Route 27). The patients were interred there with only a number for identification. When these stones became overgrown during the years it was difficult to know that it was a cemetery. Even the hillside stones in the town

cemetery were covered with dirt and grass seed. As the State Hospital celebrated its 100th anniversary, a State Hospital Cemetery Committee focused on restoration. Eagle Scout projects were designed to clean debris and find the stones. Research resulted in names, birth and death dates found HISTORY DAY continued on page 17

identifying the 841 sites in the two locations that will be the walking part of the tour. These former patients now have been given the dignity and the personalities reflecting residents who lived, laughed and loved. Be sure to visit these special spaces on June 8. The first tour leaves at 9 a.m. from the Dwight Derby House on Frairy St. with a final tour at 2 p.m.

Built circa 1725… George Washington could have shopped here. Stop in and visit this Historic Medfield Property!!
