Family-owned businesses provide more than dollars to the community BY JOSH PERRY Hometown Weekly Staff
ales at local, independently-owned businesses provide 73 cents per dollar back into the community in terms of taxes, hiring local employees, and buying local services. But, the importance of supporting family businesses goes far beyond pure economics. Independently-owned businesses, like the ones featured in this section, are also part of the fabric of the community. Non-profit organizations receive an average of 350 percent more support from local businesses than from national chains, according to numbers released by Devra Bailin, the Economic Development Director for the Town of Needham. Local businesses are tied into the communities in which they are located and many of the owners are community members themselves.

They Make Wood and Furniture Beautiful...Again Wayne and Debbie Towle have been in the wood and furniture restoration business since 1980. They will strip and/or finish your woodwork or furniture to it's original splendor. "We work with the customer to help choose the correct color and finish to create that special look" says Wayne. "Stripping away years of paint to reveal the wood underneath is very exciting. During one project we found the wood in the room was English Sycamore, a wood that is not readily available. The contractor was changing some details and adding others and was forced to use American Sycamore, which is very different in tone. This is where our color expertise came into play. It all matches perfectly." They also work with area contractors on new construction. They can make a new walnut library look like it is straight out of a 200 year old tavern or "change it up" and finish it to look very contemporary. "My biggest goal is to be consulted during the planning stage so I can assist in the correct choice of the wood species to match the vision in the customers head. It is discouraging to view a room full of mahogany and hear the owner hates red" says Wayne. In addition to all the site work they do, the Towle's take in hundreds of furniture restoration projects each year in the shop in Needham. These projects run from gluing loose joints in chairs and replacing missing veneer to refinishing dining room tables, bureaus, and armoires. "We recently had a customer whose table was water damaged. The table had a chevron pattern in oak, which had lifted. This table had a lot of sentimental value to the owner and she was heartbroken. We took the table in, repaired the substrate, reset the blocks that made up the pattern and refinished it. She loves the table and we were all psyched too" say Debbie. Other services offered include color blending and matching, fine wood repairs, touching up and reviving existing finishes, as well as finishing new work for cabinet makers. "When it comes to wood and finishes, we do it all."

They are fully insured. Two years ago Whitney Towle joined the family business.

wning a business is the American dream, and Gerry Pelissier has been dreaming about it since he was a kid. Having owned a small coffee shop franchise called "Quikava" back when his kids were young, he has been in the restaurant business for many years. His youngest daughter, Nicole, recalls the days when Gerry was opening his early stores. "I remember when I was a kid, I thought it was the coolest thing ever that my dad owned a business. I loved going to visit him and getting smoothies and muffins with my mom and older sister, I felt like such a big shot because the owner was my dad!" Fast forward 15 years, Gerry has moved on to bigger things. He currently owns 3, soon to be 4, Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt Locations in Needham, Natick, Canton and Mansfield. His youngest daughter Nicole is now his "right-hand man" working as the Marketing Manager for all of his stores. "I'm really proud of him," Nicole said, "He is the hardest working man I have ever met. I love that I am old enough now to actually help him with his dreams, and to be part of it's success." The Pelissier family also deals with allergies. Gerry is gluten free, his oldest daughter Michelle is dairy free and Nicole is allergic to coconut, so their stores are all very allergy friendly. "We always make sure that our yogurt is safe as well as our toppings. We are really cautious and we want families with allergies to feel safe when they come to get froyo! We know how hard it is to trust a food establishment when it comes to allergies." Gerry said. Their locations always cater to every kind of allergy. eing a family owned business, Nicole and Gerry love when families stop in for dessert. "Come on by our Needham location! We're right across from Needham High School, next to Subway at 1185 Highland Ave and introduce yourself to us! We love to chat!"

Eighty-two years ago, Dr. F. X. "Doc" Maguire returned home to Walpole - "the only place he belonged". In 1932, he opened his veterinary practice in East Walpole and continued caring for companion animals in his office and large animals throughout Norfolk County until his death in 1975. Maguire Kennel, Inc. is run with unequaled service and knowledge; "Doc" Maguire had a basic instinct for making animals comfortable. Susan Maguire has spent her 72 years applying that which she learned from her father and passed it on to Pamela Cutler, her corporate partner, groomer and kennel manager for over 30 years. You can expect the continuity of dealing with the same people - all trained to a very high standard based on paying strict attention to their charges. They establish close relationships, so they recognize what is normal with each dog and cat. Our staff represents approximately 38+ years of experience.
