could, coaching me on what I needed to do all through the morning. In the arena, she was the voice in my head telling me to push forward, to keep my head up and my heels down. I won first place that day. When I left the arena after nervously waiting for what place I had won, my mom was there. She grabbed my hand with as much pride as I had ever seen in her eyes and said, “You did it!” It took some years later for me to realize how important it was for my mom to be there, holding my hand, saying encouraging words and words of wisdom. My mom has been my rock and the voice in my head telling me to keep going through everything in my life. So, on Mother’s Day, I will set aside the time to give my mom my thanks for being there for me through thick and thin, even when she couldn’t physically be there. Love is a wonderful thing for a daughter to have. I’ve had it all my life and couldn’t be happier. We here at Forever Young hope that you’re Mother’s Day is filled with love, memories, laughter and maybe a few tears… but always with happiness. As always we welcome your questions and comments at

hen I started writing the intro for this month’s Forever Young, I knew I would need a box of tissues by the end. On Sunday, May 12, I hope everyone takes a moment to have a long chat on the phone with their Mother, share a dinner or cup of tea or tell a story about their Mother that inspired them. My mother, Teresa, has been a constant in my life and I am lucky enough to still have her very active in my life. I have many happy memories with my mother and some sad ones, but I always admired the strength that she has and the independence that she showed and passed on to me. When times would get tough in my family, I would see my mom persevere. She would make a plan and make sure that everything would turn out the very best that it could. In my times of heartache or trouble, she would be there, holding my hand, making me feel stronger, better and through her past experiences, guide me to a solution. When I was young, I used to horseback ride and show competitively. I rode western pleasure and my mom trained me with a few other trainers on my horse Lakota. My first ever show was the Valentine’s show, the biggest show held year round by the show grounds. I was nervous as could be. I was dressed in jeans, a button up white shirt and a cowgirl hat. My mom helped me with my hair that morning and talked me out of my nervousness as much as she

Working with family and wine “...Just being able to come in (to work) and know I”m working with someone I can trust, it makes all the difference.” Sevin Bullwinkle/staff photographer

From right to left: Livia Wilson, owner of 121 Tapas, with manager Jessica Domster and daughter and manager Emily Thompson. By Brittany Llorente

When deciding who would be a good match for her changing business, Livia Wilson, owner of 121 Tapas in Fort Pierce, didn’t have to go far. Ms. Wilson’s daughter, Emily Thompson and their close friend Jessica Domster, team up to make it a family run business. “We really wanted some way to do something here that would work and then Emily thought a wine bar would be cool,” Mrs. Wilson said. “People have been really embracing and supportive of the bar and help new business people and small business people. We have a lot of recurring

customers.” With their personalities and tastes as different as the selection of wine they sell, each of the women brings something to the thriving business. The camaraderie between the three women was evident as they sat around a table enjoying a glass of wine as we talked about their restaurant. They laughed and joked and shared all the warmth of women who had shared many glasses of wine together. With as close as the women are, their ability to trust one another gives them a reassurance that everyone is giving the venture their all.

“It can get stressful,” Ms. Thompson said. “It’s also fun and just being able to come in here and know I’m working with someone I can trust, makes all the difference.” Ms. Wilson agreed, saying that it could be stressful, but there was a level of comfort that came with dealing with family. “I think anytime you deal with personal relationships and stressful relationships it’s going to be difficult, but, you know that everyone is looking for the benefit of the whole,” said Ms. Wilson. “To see my daughter and Jessica managing the place, I get to see so much of myself in them and

how they run things.” The restaurant itself is a gem on the water and the combination of the view, the food, wine and beer makes for a delightful evening among friends. The restaurant is constantly changing, including its menu, the introduction of new wines and the ever changing craft beer cycles of breweries. 121 Tapas is located at 121 Melody Lane, Fort Pierce. Calcium and vitamin D important througout life For Forever Young

a small fracture of a bone caused by repeated physical strain. Gymnasts, runners and even marching soldiers can suffer such fractures even if they are otherwise healthy. Calcium is also needed for other parts of the body. The National Institutes of Health Osteoporosis and Related Bone Diseases National Resource Center says calcium is necessary for the heart, muscles and nerves to function properly. It also helps blood to clot. Furthermore, pregnant women need ample calcium in their diets in order to supply calcium to a growing fetus. If a pregnant woman does not get enough calcium through diet, the baby will draw it from Mom’s own

bones, threatening the mother’s health while leading to bone fragility and increasing her risk of fractures. Calcium and vitamin D work in conjunction. Although a balanced diet may provide enough calcium, many times high levels of salt and protein in one’s diet can increase calcium excretion through the kidneys. Also, people who have intolerance to lactose may not be getting the calcium they need. Vitamin D is necessary for the body to absorb calcium. Without vitamin D, a woman cannot produce enough calcitriol, impairing calcium absorption from her diet. In turn, the body will take calcium from stores in existing bone,

weakening them and preventing the formation of strong, new bone. Women who may have been deficient in vitamin D and calcium can develop osteoporosis and other bone-loss conditions as they age. Thanks to osteoporosis, half of all women over the age of 50 will have a fracture of the hip, wrist, or vertebra during their lifetime, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine. A drop in estrogen at the time of menopause can contribute to bone loss. Drinking large amounts of alcohol, maintaining a low body weight and smoking can each cause osteoporosis. See HEALTH, Page 10

Calcium and vitamin D are frequently touted for their ability to improve bone health. While consuming foods rich in vitamin D and calcium is especially important for aging women, both vitamin D and calcium also help to keep the body strong and vital at any age. Calcium and vitamin D help fight bone loss, and not just in older women. Younger, active women need it to prevent stress fractures and other bone injuries. A 2008 study reviewed the health of 5,000 female U.S. Navy recruits, and those who did not take additional calcium and vitamin D were 25 percent more likely to suffer a stress fracture. Genealogists never give up GENEALOGY BRENDA K. SMITH

check GenForum, RootsWeb, and any other site she may have used, searching for any information that might have been entered by Hazel Knight. I might email other researchers on these surnames and asked if they have contact with her. Using Google is another good way to find someone. Type in their name, the word “genealogy” and maybe the name you are researching. You will come up with many websites containing this combination of words, and you may find Hazel Knight’s personal genealogy website with your family data along with her contact information. I have also used the white pages of the phone book. If you are researching a small town or county, especially if it is a unique name, get a list of everyone with the surname you want who has a listed phone, then start calling. Simply explain that you are doing family research on their name in that area, and ask if anyone in their family has the family history. You will be surprised at how polite they may be and you probably will get the name of the relative you should contact. I have even had people read their family Bible to me over the phone. The worse thing that can happen is a “no” or a hang-up. Just go for it. You cannot success if you don’t try, and the rewards can be amazing. You can even make new friends and gain an ally in tracing your ancestors. Brenda Knight Smith is an avid genealogist and has researched her family extensively through centuries. Contact her at

hile searching for my ancestors on the Internet, I find another researcher working on the same family. I can’t believe it! After 15 years, here is a stranger, somewhere nearby or across the world, who has the exact information I have been looking for. I can almost reach out and touch them. I’m so excited! I shoot off an email to the only contact I have, praying they live on the Internet, just like I do, and will answer within minutes. Then IT happens. Failure Notice: “MAILBOX NOT FOUND.” How can that be? Why would any self-respecting genealogist change their email address so that they can’t be found, after putting out such tempting information? It happens all the time and makes me pull my hair out. I want to scream, find their phone number, address… they have to be there! But all I have is some silly, made-up “” and no recourse. I’m sure it has happened too many of you too, at one time or another. Did you just shrug and give up? Sometimes you have to, but not before a fight. This is a research project all in itself. I look for anything in the query I can find that might be used to identify the author. If I’m lucky they will have given their name. Then I take down all the information they has given in the query. There will be surnames, dates, places and maybe relationships. I can add this to everything I have on the family. Now it is time to start the search for the researcher. Let’s assume I am trying to find Hazel Knight and I know she is researching the names Knight, McLean and Byrd. Even if only one of these families is mine, I am going to look for her connection to all of them. I know she is researching in Cumberland County, NC. I have several avenues here. I can go to the Cumberland County website on USGenWeb. I will also

Restaurant has dinner you won’t soon forget

By Anna-Marie Menhenott

FORT PIERCE — Nestled away in the Colonnade’s Shopping Center on Hutchinson Island is one of the area’s most delightful spots for dinner. The warm, friendly vibe makes first-time customers to Capone’s Hideaway feel like family. Those who have dined there before, as my dining companion had, are warmly greeted with hugs from owners Beth Holleman and her husband, Sal. We visited Capone’s on a Wednesday evening, and the intimate dining areas, including the outside dining tables, were full to capacity. The attentive staff, which donned 1940s gangster-themed costumes, complete with Tommy gun necklaces and era-appropriate hats, seated us quickly and went over their extensive wine list. Although we passed on wine, the wide-ranging list would impress any connoisseur. There is also a full bar and several beers on tap for those who enjoy spirits with dinner. We browsed the menu, and found a vast array of items from escargot to lobster ravioli. Our waitress recommended we start our meal with fried artichokes, and I’m glad she did. The lightly floured artichoke hearts were served in a delicious lemon, butter and caper dipping sauce that had just the right amount of tartness. “One of our most popular items right now is the mango and papaya salsa,” said Ms. Holleman. “Everybody loves it. Sal evolves with the customers,” she said about her husband. We were only a few bites into our appetizer when Sal sent out a plate of potato gnocchi carbonara, butterfly shrimp in a cream sauce over a bed of spinach and tomatoes and a bowl of seafood chowder, full with clams, shrimp and snapper. The potato gnocchi carbonara

The bacon added an amazing flavor to this popular appetizer. The butterfly shrimp, which lay in an amazing gorgonzola cream sauce, were cooked to perfection and created a wonderful dynamic with the enticing spinach. The seafood chowder was incredible. The flavors burst upon every bite, with the snapper melting away and the clams, in contrast, giving a tasty bite to the soup. Dinners are accompanied by dinner rolls and either a garden salad or Caesar salad. We chose the latter, and were impressed with the delightful dressing and tasty croutons. The salad can be accompanied by fresh black pepper and freshly grated parmesan cheese. “Sal really listens to the customers and caters to their needs. If we don’t have something on the menu, he’ll make it for you. We have people call all the time for special soups and entrées and Sal is always willing to make them,” she said. For our entrées, I chose the black-

ened chicken Alfredo and my companion, without hesitation, picked the macadamia crusted snapper. The chicken Alfredo was completed by a light, creamy sauce and flawless pasta that had just the right amount of bite to it. The build-up of heat from the chicken was delightful, making every mouthful a pleasant experience. I tried my companion’s snapper, which looked absolutely amazing. Once I took a bite, I knew why she didn’t hesitate in asking for it. The rather large piece of fish was cooked to perfection. The coat of chopped macadamia nuts added a sweet crunch to the impeccably prepared fish. The snapper was presented on a bed of creamy mashed sweet potatoes and side of fresh green beans. The dessert menu offers many homemade specialties, but the house specialty, the almond basket, had been saved for us. “We sell out of the baskets all the time. If someone knows they’re coming in, they’ll call ahead to See Dining, Page 9

make sure we have one for them. They’re just that popular,” said Ms. Holleman. The basket is made by Ms. Holleman who takes great pride in her amazing creation. The chewy, almond basket is full with raspberry sorbet, fresh berries, whipped cream and raspberry sauce. If I had any idea how incredible this dessert was, I would have saved more room. Next time, I’ll definitely remember to do so. Dinner was capped off with a cappuccino that was accompanied by biscotti and a sugar stick. There specials are always changing and early bird takes place from 4:30 - 6 p.m. nightly. They also cater regularly. Capone’s Hideaway is located at 1102 Seaway Drive in Fort Pierce. In order to maintain bone and body health, there are certain dietary intake recommendations regarding calcium and vitamin D. Adults under age 50 should consume between 1,000 and 1,300 milligrams of calcium and roughly 600 IU of vitamin D daily. Calcium can be found in dairy products as well as in salmon, shellfish, brazil nuts, dried beans, and green, leafy vegetables. Vitamin D is found in fish, eggs and fortified milk. Vitamin D can also form when the body is exposed to sunlight. Even as few as 10 minutes of daily exposure to sunlight can produce vitamin D. Consuming enough calcium and vitamin D can help a woman’s body stay healthy as she ages.
