BREVARD COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE

Sheriff’s Employees Recognized for Reducing Warrants

O

ne of the most important functions served by your Sheriff’s Office is the executing of arrest warrants. It is never easy and is often very dangerous for the deputy sheriffs and police officers who seek those who are wanted. In January of 2005, the Sheriff’s Office had 31,481 active arrest warrants for Brevard County. Un-served warrants are a tough challenge for every Sheriff's Office in Florida, but more than 31,000 was an alarming number. Our team felt that if we took a more coordinated and aggressive approach, we could serve more warrants and correspondingly drive the crime rate down. I am proud to report, that as a result of this effort, we now have fewer than 10,700 active warrants. This reduced number is especially impressive when you consider that thousands of new warrants are sent to the Sheriff's Office every year. To be as effective as possible, the Sheriff’s Office has refined the manner in which we approach arrest warrants from all areas. BCSO's "Fugitive Unit" consists of a group of highly trained deputy sheriffs who understand the importance of what they do. They are supervised by Sgt. Frank Hickman, whose enthusiasm and competence promotes great success in the unit. They have a strong reputation among the criminal element for being effective. While that may translate to wanted felons being more evasive, it also makes them less likely to commit new crimes because they do not want draw attention to themselves. Another group of very special people reside in the BCSO's Judicial Process Unit. This dedicated staff, led by Joanne Homer, is charged with receiving every arrest warrant issued and compiling all infor-

mation relative to the wanted person into appropriate databases. Several years ago, we decided to consolidate the Fugitive Unit and Judicial Process Unit into a single team to promote even better communications and improve effectiveness. The partnership proved to be successful. It led to faster identification of those persons posing the greatest risk. As a result, the Fugitive team was able to re-prioritize and begin working on locating the most dangerous subjects within minutes of important warrants becoming active. Every deputy sheriff and police officer within Brevard County now has instant access to information regarding active warrants through a variety of databases. As a result, thousands of persons are arrested for warrants each year stemming from traffic stops. Warrants lists are typically reviewed by our patrol deputies prior to the start of their shifts who keep a keen eye out for wanted persons and bring many of them to justice. Jail corrections deputies have also played a vital role. We have about forty jail deputies who are dual sworn in corrections and law enforcement. As a result, many of them have the ability to serve warrants at the jail. Prior to this change, deputies from the Fugitive Unit would have to come to the jail to serve warrants which was a daily occurrence. This detracted from their primary duties and would often interfere with plans to capture other wanted felons. Our citizens have also been critical to

our success, we frequently push information out to the public showing who is wanted. Hometown News has helped us alert the public to thousands of wanted fugitives. In many cases, family members are able to persuade those wanted to turn themselves in. In other cases, people were unaware they had a warrant and they call to make themselves available to our deputies. We also have enjoyed an active partnership with CrimeLine. CrimeLine provides financial awards to persons who give critical information leading to the arrest of persons who are wanted by police. The person who provides the information remains anonymous and receives a special code that allows him or her to go to a specific bank and collect the reward money without revealing their identity. This anonymity encourages persons to call Crimeline without fear of reprisal. Crime's number is 1-800-423-TIPS. Locating and capturing fugitives from justice is dangerous work. People often react unpredictably and violently even when facing relatively minor criminal charges. Many of those who have a violent criminal past will do anything to evade arrest. Every day in Brevard, our deputy sheriffs and police officers come face to face with these dangerous criminals and bring them to justice. It takes very special people who are fully aware of the threat but still decide to put themselves in harm's way to bring criminals to justice and make our communities safer. We are very proud of each and every one of them.

New Central Brevard Boys & Girls Club is Essential By Sheriff Jack Parker For Hometown News

When looking at the 103,000 inmates in Florida’s prisons, many have one thing in common, their grades plummeted after leaving elementary school and thousands never even made it out of the 7th grade. Of the 37,000 inmates who entered the Florida Prison system in 2010, they tested, on average, at the 6.2 grade level. Most parents know the transition from the sanctuary of an elementary school to the fast and furious pace of a middle school is a big change for any child. Starting any new school can be tough, but going from a single teacher in 6th grade to seven or more teachers in 7th grade can be overwhelming. Even structured children with attentive and loving parents can find the sudden change intense. As law enforcement officers, we often must enter the most unstable and dysfunctional homes imaginable. It is

heart breaking to see what so many of Brevard’s children are exposed to. They encounter physical and emotional abuse, continuous neglect, and are subjected to observing immoral and criminal behavior on a daily basis. Many of these children still manage to be well behaved, good students throughout their pre-teen years despite the terrible things they endure. How do they do this without any healthy role models in the home? I have long believed our elementary school teachers deserve much of the credit. They serve as caring and loving surrogate parents and strive to give these children the attention and structure they are not getting at home. Middle and High School teachers are just as caring, but the workload caused by many classes and well over a hundred students prevents a more personal teaching environment. The change from 6th to 7th grade often marks the very moment that children can start going down the wrong

path. Without strong parental guidance, many do not keep up with their homework assignments or study appropriately for their tests. As a result, it is not long before they start falling behind, their participation wanes and their selfesteem erodes. To make matters worse, anger and behavioral problems often accompany poor academic performance. In a very short period of time, a graduating 6th grader can become a failing 7th grader. The child becomes disappointed in themselves and angry at the world. In too many cases, a criminal

sociopath is born. This is where Boys & Girls Clubs can make a real difference. Children have a refuge to go to after school where they can study and get their homework done. One of the little miracles you will see at these Clubs is how these children mentor and tutor other younger children. Not only do the younger children benefit, but the children doing the tutoring become more confident in their abilities and gain a real sense of self-worth as they help others. Our local organization is known as Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida (BGCCF) and serves Brevard, Orange, Osceola and Seminole Counties. Most (88%) of the 12,000 boys and girls at BGCCF maintain at least a C grade average while two thirds have earned an A or B grade average. Not all of their successes are academic. As an example, of the 4,531 female members at BGCCF, there were no teen pregnancies in 2010 as compared to the 1,857 babies born to teens who were not Boys & Girls Club members living in our same four county area. While Orange County has more than 20 Boys & Girls Clubs, Brevard County has only two, one in Melbourne and one in Mims. However, due to the extreme generosity of the Cocoa Rotarians, a $250,000 facility was just purchased so that Cocoa and the surrounding area will have a great new Boys & Girls Club. In addition, the Eckerd Family Foundation has pledged $390,000, Harris Corporation has donated $100,000 through their Community Foundation, Disney Cruise Line donated $250,000 and the Sheriff’s Office has pledged $175,000 of confiscated drug money to renovate and operate the building donated by Rotary. Watch Jail Court live While most courtrooms in Brevard County allow public access, there is one that does not…the courtroom at the jail. Most everyone who is arrested for an offense, from DUI to 1st Degree Murder, goes to the jail. The next day, unless a defendant is released on bond or by a county pre-trial release officer, they will head to court for “Initial Proceedings”. The initial proceedings courtroom is located in the secure portion of the County Jail Complex in Sharpes. Since the courtroom is actually inside the jail, it does not allow for safe access by the general public. Fortunately, the advancement of technology has now made it possible to bring the court to our citizens, since our citizens cannot come to the court.

Today’s home and office computers coupled with greatly improved audio video equipment has now made it possible to stream live video and audio. As a result, we installed special audio video equipment in the courtroom that now allows live streaming video and audio of the court proceedings directly to home and office computers. Citizens can now observe and listen to the defendant, the defense attorney, the prosecutor and the judge. They can watch jail court live as it happens. Citizens interested in watching streaming court video from their own computer, please go to the Sheriff’s Office website at www.BrevardSheriff.com and click on the “LiveStream Jail Court” link. Jail Court typically lasts three to four hours and starts at 1:15 pm on weekdays and 9:30 am on weekends and holidays. There is also a Plea Court that takes place on Wednesdays at 10:00 am. The Sheriff’s Office recognizes and

appreciates the efforts of Brevard Community College’s WBCC-TV for assisting us with the project. This new capability is good for citizens who have an interest in Brevard County’s Criminal Justice System. It is

also helpful to victims of crimes or family members of arrestees who want to watch the proceedings without having to go to the jail. We hope you enjoy the service.

BREVARD COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE

Sheriff’s Awards Deputy Sheriff of the Year On Sept. 6, BCSO received a 911 call from a person surfing in the area of the Patrick AFB. The caller explained that he had just witnessed a female exit a vehicle, and start running towards him while shouting for help. A man exited the same car, grabbed the female and forcibly placed her back in the car. The man then drove southbound on A1A with the passenger door still open. The caller believed he had just witnessed a kidnapping. Sergeant Mike Brown was in the area of the Pineda Causeway and State Road 3. As a superviMichael Brown sor, he took control, and directed other deputy sheriffs to check A1A as he began checking the Pineda Causeway for the vehicle. He observed a vehicle matching the general description traveling west on the Causeway. He turned on his blue lights and siren in an attempt to stop the vehicle. Unfortunately, the man driving the vehicle would not stop. Sgt. Brown observed a physical altercation between the driver and passenger and the vehicle was weaving in and out of the traffic lane. The erratic movements of the vehicle were a result of the female passenger attempting to grab and pull at the steering wheel. The driver was refusing to stop and the vehicle continued westbound at a high rate of speed, crossing the Banana River bridge. The vehicle crossed State Road 3 and continued over the Indian River bridge with Sgt. Brown in pursuit. The vehicle then made an abrupt turn to the right and drove right into the Indian River and came to rest in the water, more than 100 feet from shore. Fearing the man might be injuring the woman, Sgt. Brown immediately jumped into the water and waded quickly toward the vehicle. As he approached, he could see from a distance, through the glass, that the driver appeared to be repeatedly striking the passenger. As he got closer, he saw the man was repeatedly stabbing the woman with a large knife. Sgt. Brown pointed his duty weapon at the driver. As an extremely experienced deputy who is no stranger to dangerous situations, he moved into a position so

that if he discharged his firearm, the bullet would not pass through the assailant and strike the woman adding to her injuries. Sgt. Brown fired six times through the driver’s side window, with all 6 rounds striking the driver. Thanks to Sgt. Brown abilities and forethought, none of the bullets hit the woman and the vicious attack was halted. He then worked to rescue the critically injured woman from the vehicle and carried her to shore for medical attention. Then he returned to the vehicle to ascertain the status of the driver in case he needed medical attention, but it was determined the man was deceased. The victim was transported to the hospital with life threatening injuries. As a result of the attack, she sustained 31 stab wounds and lacerations to her abdomen and arm and had a broken wrist. After emergency treatment and surgery we are very thankful to advise the woman survived and has recovered. Our investigators believe the man’s intent was to kill the woman and then commit suicide. Sgt. Brown’s quick and decisive actions were the only thing standing between the victim dying from this brutal attack and her survival. His actions on that day led to his unanimous selection as our Deputy Sheriff of the Year. In addition to being the Deputy Sheriff of the Year, he is also being recognized with a Life Saving Award and the agency’s highest award, the Medal of Valor. Additionally, we are very proud to announce that he was selected to receive one of our nation’s most prestigious law enforcement awards, the “Award of Valor” from the National Sheriff’s Association.

Corrections Deputy of the Year Corrections Deputy Bjorn Norman has set the standard as a dedicated professional in the Corrections Field. He always demonstrates the highest level of professionalism and is a positive and motivating role model for his co-workers. He understands the importance of being proactive in the inmate housing units and has the ability to sense trouble before it happens and diffuses bad situations. He is not only exceptional in the housing unit, he is an outstanding booking officer. He is extremely knowledgeable of policies and state law and is leaned upon for that knowledge by his peers. Because Corrections Deputy Norman is

dually sworn in both corrections and law enforcement, he is called upon to investigate and complete criminal case reports. His work has been praised by members of the State Attorney's Office for thoroughness and attention to detail. He has also been an active member of the Jail's K-9 team for years. He is routinely called upon to conduct searches for discarded evi- Bjorn Norman dence and missing children and seniors throughout the county.

Employee of the Year The primary duty of Enid Bourgault, who has been selected as the employee of the year, is to ensure we are operating at the highest level. Her work has been critical in our office successfully being awarded three consecutive tri-annual accreditation inspections with the highest marks. Nothing illustrates her capabilities better than the following example. The Florida Sheriff’s Association decided they were going to post all of the policies and procedures of Florida's 66 Sheriff’s Offices on their website for review of best practices and best law enforcement policies throughout the state. As the information was being compiled, they made a determination the information was too voluminous. As a result, they decided to select a single Sheriff’s Office whose policies best represented all Sheriff’s Offices. Their choice ... the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office. During this year’s accreditation assessment, all three assessors complimented BCSO as one of the finest law enforcement agencies and credited much of our Enid Bourgault policy success to Enid’s diligence. One of the assessors even commented that the agency’s audit and inspection was flawless, something unheard of by an assessment team created and trained to find issues for improvement.

Communications Officer of the Year Communications Officer Angie Velten, is by all accounts, very special. She has received multiple commendations in 2011 to include various Letters of Appreciation, a Commendable Service Award, and a Meritorious Service Award. She was also directly involved in two very stressful high profile incidents. On Sept. 6, she was the primary dispatcher for a call where a man kidnapped and stabbed a female more than 30 times in an attempt to kill her. CO Velten calm and competent actions under horribly stressful conditions played a major role in giving the deputies the information they needed to find the suspect and save the woman’s life. In another incident, as you heard earlier tonight, she was instrumental in the capture of man who committed a homicide in Vero Beach. Angie Velten’s actions, performance and attitude throughout 2011 can only be characterized as outstanding. She is a true team player who strives for perfection in her work and has a deep caring for the safety and welfare of our deputies and our citizens.

The Lucy Ross Award Beginning in 2005, the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office established a very special annual award known as the "Sgt. Lucy Ross Award". Lucy was unfortunately taken from us much too early when she was killed in the line of duty in 2004. Lucy was very special to all of us. One of the ways we celebrate her life is through the recognition of a very special person in the Sheriff’s Office who demonstrates the same qualities as Lucy…qualities such as an unwavering dedication to the community, the attainment of excellence in her profession, and the love of children. This year’s recipient Agent Joe Martin has been a member of the Brevard County Sheriff's Office for more than 8 years. During his tenure, he has served in the capacity of a uniform patrol deputy, a General See AWARDS, 7

Crimes Agent, a Domestic Violence Agent and a Homicide investigator. There are many heart-warming stories about his good works in the community. As one example, he provided eyeglasses to a nineJoe Martin year-old child with cerebral palsy who was suffering headaches, but whose family could not afford them. As another, he took it upon himself to lead a food drive through the holidays to assist the Women's Center in Melbourne. He has been an outstanding board member for the South Brevard Woman's Center and Serene Harbor which provides shelter to battered women and children. His compassion and determination toward the protection of victims, in particular to women and children is unparalleled. The following statement from a victim sums it up best, when they stated, "It was obvious that what he does is not merely a job, but a calling and a passion. I cannot even imagine the number of people he has helped in this community."

Volunteer of the Year In 2011, C.O.P. Mike Powers donated more than 1,500 hours. Commander Joe Ambrose of South Precinct had so much confidence in him; he was selected to coordinate the C.O.P. program for the entire Mike Powers precinct. His work ethic, coupled with the experience he earned from a distinguished career with the Air Force, has proven to be a great asset to our Office. His desire to give so much effort and time to assist our Agency and the citizens of Brevard, and to do it without any compensation, is truly extraordinary.

Reserve Deputy of the Year Reserve Deputies are fully certified law

BREVARD COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE enforcement officers, but are typically employed in the private sector or are retired. They want to continue to serve their community as a law enforcement officer and do so without any pay or benefits. All of our reserves are extremely special people who volunteer their time. After careful deliberation and examination of several excellent choices for the Reserve Deputy of the Year award, the Reserve Unit proudly nominated Sergeant Charles Nash. Sgt. Nash has shown exemplary performance both as a supervisor and in all of the duties required of him as a patrol deputy. He is friendly, outgoing and well liked. We believe one of the reasons our reserve deputy unit is so successful is largely due to the motivation and enthusiasm of Sgt. Nash. He sets a strong example by working a lot. We ask that reserve deputies volunteer 240 hours Charles Nash a year. This deputy shattered that number hitting 689 hours in 2011. This is quite impressive when you realize that he has a very busy full time job as a very successful attorney. He also finds the time to serve his community as a member on many non-profit boards to include Crosswinds Youth Services, the Women’s Center, and the Brevard Symphony Orchestra.

Citizen of the Year Our citizen of the year, Tim Wakefield, is arguably Brevard County’s most famous person. He is also in our opinion one of the finest major league baseball players of all time. But that is not the reason he is being selected as our citizen of the year. Instead, he has been unanimously selected by our team for the wins he has had away from the field. He has played a critical role in the success of the Early Intervention Center. This very special school is an essential resource to children and children with special needs right here in Brevard County. Each year, he holds a celebrity dinner, auction and golf tournament which has brought in hundreds of thousands of dollars for these children. He absolutely loves each

one of them and they absolutely adore him.

Medal of Valor The Medal of Valor is the highest award presented by the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office. It is presented to a member who performs an act of heroism, by putting themselves in imminent danger for the purpose of saving someone's life. Sgt. Carlos Reyes, Cpl. Chris Shephard, Agent Raonel Barrial and Agent Mike Helms On Aug. 5, we received a 911 call stating a man had entered a business and pointed a gun at two innocent civilians. During the 911 call, the 911 officers could hear the armed suspect yelling to the people in the office "You are going to die." At that Carlos Reyes point, the female victim began pleading with the man to not shoot her. The armed man pointed the gun at her head and then fired a shot into the ceiling. Within 2 minutes, Deputy Fettes, Corporal Shephard and Sergeant Reyes arrived on scene. Chris Shephard They implemented a plan to try to rescue the two people from the rear of the store while deputies distracted the gunman. Unfortunately, while Sergeant Reyes and Corporal Shephard were trying to get the victims to safety, they were confronted the armed male. Raonel Barrial Sgt. Reyes then utilized his skills as a hostage negotiator in an attempt to get the armed man to surrender as Deputies Barrial and Helms were arriving on scene. Sergeant Reyes advised the gunman was standing in the doorway holding a Mike Helms

loaded firearm in his right hand. He continued to negotiate with the suspect and pleaded with him to put the gun down. Despite Sgt. Reyes' efforts, the suspect raised his weapon in an effort to shoot the deputies. Both Corporal Shephard and Sgt. Reyes fired their weapons, causing the suspect to fall to the ground. Agents Barrial and Helms quickly approached the downed suspect. As they approached, the suspect again raised the firearm towards deputies causing Sergeant Reyes, and Agents Barrial and Helms to fire their weapons. As a result of the injuries sustained, the suspect died on scene. During the course of this incident, all of the deputies involved acted courageously during a very high pressure, armed confrontation. They worked as a team to risk their lives in hopes of rescuing two hostages. Each deputy remained calm and controlled and tried to work towards a peaceful conclusion. Only when faced with the imminent threat of harm against the public and other deputies did the deputies use deadly force. Had they responded more slowly or acted in any other way, the day would likely have ended with innocent citizens being killed.

Preventing home burglary not as hard as you think You might be surprised to learn just how easy it is to stop burglars from getting into your home. Some people have resigned themselves to the thought that if a criminal wants to get in, there is not much they can do about it. Fortunately, that is not the case. By installing just a few simple and inexpensive upgrades and taking a few precautions, you can greatly reduce your family’s chances of being victimized. Most burglars are looking for the fastest and easiest target possible. Burglars typically target homes they believe to be temporarily unoccupied to avoid being confronted by a homeowner with a gun. Criminals drive, bike or walk through neighborhoods, usually during daylight hours, looking for homes that appear vulnerable and vacant. They look for lights on during the day or an accumulation of mail or newspapers that may indicate homeowners are away. While exterior lighting is an excellent crime deterrent at night, do not allow outside lights to be on during the day as it sends the wrong message to criminals that you are away. Put lights on timers or solar switches to ensure lights are off during the day. Do not allow newspapers and fliers to gather in the driveway or near the front door. If on vacation, consider putting a hold on your mail or ask a trusted friend to hold your mail and packages until your return. Only tell people who absolutely need to know that you are going away. Sometimes, it is the family member of a neighbor who is aware you are gone who commits the burglary. Most burglars start at the same place – the front door. They do this for several reasons. Primarily, because they need to knock to ensure no one is home. They can spend some time there without arousing suspicion. They can peer through glass and determine if the home has a dog or an alarm system (two things burglars dislike). Many front doors open inward, and unfortunately, that makes them very easy to kick in. The burglar ensures no neighbors are looking and then hits the door with his foot or shoulder to open it. Most of these doors, even those with deadbolt locks, are forced open easily. How? It is not typically the door or the deadbolt that is weak, but the door jamb itself. The little strike plate in the door jamb (the part the deadbolt slides into) is frequently held in place by small screws. When force is exerted on the door, the soft wood of the jamb splits easily and the door opens. The burglar enters, closing the door behind him, leaving no outside clues. How can you stop that? It is actually fairly easy. Replace that little strike plate with a security strike plate with long screws available at many hardware stores or online. Obscure all clear glass at or near the front door so that the burglar cannot see inside. The less he can

window, supplemental locks (thumbscrews) can be applied to the inside frames. After a burglar breaks a window and unlocks the factory locks, these little locks will still prevent the window from opening. The burglar doesn’t know why and doesn’t have the time to find out. He’s made noise and he is still outside and he probably won’t stick around too long to figure it out. Ensure all family members know about these security upgrades and can remove them during times of emergency. Lastly, sliding glass doors can be a problem. A burglar can defeat most locks with a simple screwSee BURGLARY, 26

Many front doors open inward, and unfortunately, that makes them very easy to kick in. see, the more uncomfortable he will be and the more likely he will leave without attempting a burglary. Signs near the front door indicating a monitored alarm system or “Beware of Dog” are also good deterrents. Even if you don’t have a dog, a big empty dog bowl near the front door can stop a burglar in his tracks. Think like a burglar. Why would a burglar want to risk encountering a home with a big dog when there are so many homes without dogs? Some people will leave a garage door partially open for pets or ventilation. Burglars driving by are attracted to a partially open garage door and will quickly squeeze under the door to access the garage. Once inside your garage, they can use tools to claw through the drywall to get into your home, all while being completely undetected by neighbors. If your home has attic stairs in the garage, they can use them to get into your attic and then walk across your trusses and drop down through your ceiling into your home. Side doors with windows are also attractive to burglars. Most side entry doors are somewhat secluded and the glass is easy to break. A burglar’s objective is not to wriggle through the broken glass, but rather to reach through and unlock the door. You can stop this by installing a door without a window, or adding security screening or using a double cylinder deadbolt lock (if code allows). To prevent burglars from breaking in through a

BREVARD COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE

What’s the password? By Crime Prevention Officer Pam Conner We use passwords, lots of them, for important things like e-mail, bank accounts, and credit cards. When trying to remember so many passwords, some people pick simple passwords like our dog’s name, our child’s birthday or something easy like “abc123”, but Pam Conner to do so puts you at considerable risk. In addition to using overly simple passwords, using the same password at multiple sites compounds the likelihood that someone will take control of your accounts. Using the same password for a unsecure website and your bank account is a bad combination. The people who manage a site can be privy to much of your personal data (address, birth date, credit card numbers, etc.) and can attempt to locate your bank accounts. If they can, and the only thing that stands between them and your life savings is the same password, that will be a problem.

The following guidelines will guard against someone finding out your password and using your account illegally: • Make your password as long as possible. We recommend at least 8 characters in your password, at least two of which are numeric. • Use as many different characters as possible when forming your password. If allowed, consider using numbers, punctuation characters and, when possible, mixed upper and lower-case letters. • Do not use personal information in your password that someone else is likely to be able to figure out. Names, phone numbers, addresses should be avoided. • Avoid words and geographical names that are listed in standard dictionaries. • Ensure the password for your bank

account is different from passwords you use for other purposes. • Do not use passwords that are easy to observe while you’re typing them in. Passwords like 12345 (all keys right next to each other), or hitting the same key multiple times (ie: aaaaa) should be avoided.

Below are some additional helpful hints to protect you: • Don’t leave your passwords on a sticky note on your monitor or desk • Don’t share your password • Never give your password out in an email • Change your temporary passwords • Use a different password for each different account/website Always “log out” on a password protected website Don’t fall for “phishing” attacks Be careful before clicking on any link asking you to log in, change your password, or provide any personal information, even if it appears to be from a legitimate site. It might be a “phishing” scam where the information you enter goes to a hacker. When in doubt, log on manually by typing what you know to be the site’s URL into your browser window. Change your password on a regular basis. Most resources recommend every 60 to 90 days. Clear your cache and tracking cookies in your computer often Make sure your computer is secure Be discrete when typing in your password in public placed Use up to date malware and virus protection software. If you sell your computer or replace its hard drive, you’ll need to delete the password file, and then use a file-wipe utility to permanently erase the old drive so that the new owner has difficulty restoring your personal information and passwords. Consider a “password” for your phone. Many phones can be locked so that the only way to use them is to type in a password, typically a string of numbers. Now is the time to check your passwords and make sure you are protected.

Don’t leave your passwords in plain sight.

Make your password ‘hints’ something no one else can easily guess.

Building Promising Futures

“We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give.” - Sir Winston Churchill

Making a difference in the lives of students at Brevard Community College is one of the many benefits you can realize through your philanthropy. Making a difference in the lives of students at Brevard Community College is one of the many benefits you can realize through your philanthropy. Brevard Community College Foundation, Inc. is a not-for-profit 501 (c)(3) corporation and Direct Support Organization of Brevard Community College. Since 1971, the BCC Foundation has been enhancing the access and quality of education for BCC students. One of the hallmarks of BCC’s success is accessibility, and the BCC Foundation helps to ensure that the dream of attaining a quality higher

education becomes possible – even for those who thought they could never afford it. Although BCC’s tuition is very affordable, many of our students still face financial difficulties that keep them out of college. As the Space Coast continues to face challenging times, the need for affordable education and career training is paramount. One of the Foundation’s major initiatives is to provide financial assistance to deserving Brevard County students through scholarship awards. Scholarships provided through the BCC Foundation help bridge the gap and allow more students to be able to afford an education. As the College reaches out to help the community by offering enhanced programs, the financial need for support continues to grow. By supporting the BCC Foundation, you can help the College meet the evolving needs of Brevard County. Gifts of all sizes are vital and is the lifeblood of our students. Through proper gift planning, donors can make gifts of cash or other assets while receiving tax and estate planning benefits. The BCC Foundation can provide you with various planned giving options. Your gift to BCC can be directed to any area of the College that is of particular interest to you. Regardless of the amount, rest assured that we will immediately put your gift to work on behalf of BCC students. Your donation to BCC is more than a simple textbook or a tuition payment, it represents a life transformed. Building Promising Futures! Please contact the BCC Foundation at (321) 433-7055 today to find out how you can make a difference.

Gang graffiti hotline The Sheriff’s Office has created a program which uses supervised jail inmates to remove and repaint areas that have been vandalized with graffiti. Gang members use graffiti as a means of establishing territory and to recruit new members. By quickly removing graffiti, we are not only beautifying our county, we are making it difficult for gangs to communicate. If you see graffiti, please call the Sheriff’s Office Graffiti hotline at 633-0245 and an inmate crew and

jail supervisor will be sent to the location to remove the graffiti. The inmates use recycled paint, which is provided, by the county at no cost. Inmates have been approved to remove gang graffiti from all public areas and can also remove from private buildings, fences, etc. upon approval from the property’s owner or manager.

driver. To stop this, security pins can be installed which locks one slider into another and can prevent doors from being opened, even if the lock is compromised. Some of the older or less expensive models can be lifted right out of their frames from the outside. To help prevent this, open the slider and install security spacers (or screws with washers) in upper track. Leave a little clearance so the slider still moves freely. The spacers remove the space needed to lift the door out of the frame. By just doing a few things around the house, you can greatly reduce your chances of being the victim of a home burglary.
