The Early Warning Signs of Alzheimer’s Disease


Receding Gums: A Major Issue Affecting Oral Health BY FAMILY FEATURES

Affecting nearly half of the U.S. population, gum recession is an oral health issue in which the gums have worn away, exposing teeth to damaging, disease-causing bacteria. While traditional treatments exist, they come with a painful surgery with a long recovery time. A new treatment option, however, offers better, nearly pain-free results for patients. Gum recession and its traditional treatments. For many, the issue of receding gums is caused by gum disease or from simply over-brushing the teeth and gums. While aging often comes into play, children can also be affected. In fact, 10 percent of children with braces suffer from gum recession. While there is a surgical method to correct the issue, also known as gum grafting, the process can be very painful, requiring multiple surgical procedures and an extended recovery time. To perform this method, tissue from the roof of the mouth is cut, removed and surgically grafted onto the receding gum area. But thanks to a new technique, patients now have a less painful option for correcting this issue. A New And Improved Method This breakthrough method for treating gum recession is called the Pinhole Surgical Technique (PST). Invented and patented by John Chao, D.D.S., the procedure is incision-free and suture-free. To correct the problem, Chao uses a fine needle to create a small pinhole above the receded gums. With special instruments the gums are loosened from the underlying connective tissue

and moved into the proper position. Finally, collagen strips are placed through the pinhole under the gums to keep them in place. The Pinhole Surgical Technique is "quick," "easy," and "instantly pleasing." It is quick because it takes only 15 to 20 minutes to correct gum recession for two or three teeth. It is "easy" on the patient because no incisions or stitching is required. Hence, there are hardly any symptoms of discomfort afterwards. It is "instantly pleasing" because the gum line looks practically normal immediately after the procedure is completed. Many patients are astounded by the "instant" change in appearance. Factors For Patients While costs of both procedures are comparable, there are several factors for patients to consider. Traditional gum grafting from another place in the mouth requires several incisions and generally can only correct one to two teeth per surgical visit, which can take up to two hours to complete. PST, on the other hand, involves no incisions, can correct 10-14 teeth per visit and only takes about 20 minutes to treat three teeth. Also, the Pinhole is practically healed and disappears by the next day, while gum grafting can take up to three weeks to heal. Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia. It is a progressive, degenerative disorder that attacks neurons and essentially robs people of their memory and language skills. Although there is no cure for Alzheimer's, there are therapies that can slow its neurological impact. Recognizing the early warning signs of Alzheimer's can encourage people to begin treatments that can stave off some of the more debilitating symptoms of this disease. Though it's most common among the elderly, Alzheimer's is not a normal part of aging. The Mayo Clinic says that the reasons behind the inception and progression of Alzheimer's disease are largely unknown. It is believed damage starts a decade or more before problems become evident. Abnormal deposits of proteins begin to form the amyloid plaques and tau tangles throughout the brain, and these formations are the hallmarks of the disease. Once-healthy neurons gradually begin to lose their efficiency and ability to function and communicate with one another. As more neurons die, entire areas of the brain shrink. The hippocampus, which is the area of the brain essential in forming memories, may soon become compromised. Millions of people in North America are estimated to have Alzheimer's disease and many others will be diagnosed. The following are the most common early signs and symptoms of the disease. * Memory loss: According to the Alzheimer's Organization, early memory loss can include forgetting important dates or repeatedly asking for the same information. Forgetting recently learned information and having to rely increasingly on memory aids is another potential indicator of Alzheimer's. * Declining cognition: Impaired reasoning or judgment, trouble finding the right words and visual and spatial issues

also may be early indicators of Alzheimer's. * Difficulty completing familiar tasks: Those with Alzheimer's sometimes have trouble driving to a familiar location or remembering the rules to a favorite game. People who were once good with numbers may now have difficulty balancing their checkbooks, while those who love to cook may have trouble following recipes. * Time confusion: Another indicator of Alzheimer's disease is losing track of time. One may have trouble understanding something that isn't happening in the present. Alzheimer's sufferers often forget where they are and how they got there. * Misplacing items: Everyone loses something at a point in time, but those with Alzheimer's may put items in unusual places. They may sometimes accuse others of stealing when they cannot retrace their steps and find items. * Decreased judgment: Decision-making abilities may be compromised. A person with Alzheimer's may take unnecessary risks or give away sums of money. * Mood changes: People with Alzheimer's may suffer from confusion, suspicious feelings, depression and anxiety. A person may upset easily or become anxious outside of his or her comfort zones. Age and family history of Alzheimer's disease are the biggest risk factors. The liklihood of developing Alzheimer's doubles about every five years after age 65, says the Alzheimer's Organization. In addition, those with a parent, child or sibling who have developed Alzheimer's are more likely to develop the disease than people with no such family history. A physical and neurological exam, which may include blood tests and brain imaging, will be used to diagnose Alzheimer's disease. Individuals can learn more by making appointments with their doctors.

Do Your Homework Before Cutting Gluten By Family Feature

In the battle to get leaner and healthier, people have been targeting many different food groups over the years, from fats to carbohydrates. Now, experts are weighing in on whether or not grains might be a culprit in the growing prevalence of certain diseases, including obesity and dementia. Conflicting opinions on carbohydrates “Carbohydrates are awful for the brain,” said Dr. David Perlmutter, neurologist and author of the new book “Grain Brain.” “Eating carbohydrate foods increases blood sugar levels, which causes inflammation and can lead to dementias.” However, a recent study conducted by the University of Nebraska showed that eating whole grains, such as barley and brown rice, actually helped decrease inflammation. Carolyn O’Neil, a registered dietitian, also agrees with these findings that dispute the elimination of carbohydrates in one’s diet. “Nothing could be further from the truth,” O’Neil said. “A study by Centers for Disease Control researchers projected that if grains were eliminated then diets would be extremely low in folic acid, iron and B vitamins. Even those with a gluten digestion problem have their choice of many nutritious gluten free grains to enjoy, including amaranth, buckwheat, corn, millet, non-contaminated oats, quinoa, rice, sorghum, teff and wild rice.” The experts weigh-in A growing number of people are being diagnosed with sensitivity to gluten, which is a condition that can cause a range of health problems. Gluten found in wheat, barley, rye and in oats processed in

the same mills as those grains, cannot be digested by those with celiac disease (CD) and can affect the health of those who are gluten intolerant. According to the National Institute of Health, between 5 percent and 10 percent of all people may suffer from a gluten sensitivity of some form. One out of every 133 Americans (about 3 million people) have Celiac Disease. Individuals with CD do need to consume a gluten-free diet. Nutrition experts in the United States and Canada state there is no evidence eating whole grains containing gluten poses widespread health risks for the rest of the population. Some experts, like Perlmutter, are also critical of wheat as a culprit in obesity. This is a claim disputed by others, including Judy Adams, registered dietitian with the Wheat Foods Council, who points out that Americans are actually eating less wheat today than they did one hundred years ago. O’Neil adds that those who are cutting gluten out of their diets in order to lose weight may wind up gaining instead. “You can eat just as many or even more calories when choosing gluten free foods,” she said. “After all, gluten free chocolate chip cookies are still chocolate chip cookies.” Although gluten may be at the center of the current debate, all sides seem to agree some factors do play a key role in a healthy lifestyle: physical activity; sleep; healthy fats, such as those in olive oil and avocado; and a Mediterranean style diet, which emphasizes fruits, vegetables and seafood. With these healthy dieting elements in mind, and by keeping yourself informed about the facts and benefits of foods, you can make the most educated decision when choosing what to feed your family.
