The Purpose
Manuel Molina, MD, President Since my arrival in Charleston, West Virginia, following my resident and fellowship training in San Antonio, Texas, and joining private practice in partnership with Drs. Tony Majestro and Jack Pushkin 1993, I have had varying degrees of involvement with the West Virginia Orthopaedic Society. My initial understanding of the functions of the Society were limited in scope and understanding of the importance that it would have on my career as an orthopaedic surgeon. Although I attended meetings and gave several talks on different topics during the annual winter meeting, then the subsequent spring meeting, as well as the occasional yearly
society board function at The Greenbrier, my life was focused elsewhere. Like many others, I was mainly involved in starting and building a practice by working in several hospitals, covering emergency room call including the trauma center at CAMC, while at the same time balancing, as we all do, a growing family life, community involvement, catering to multiple children’s sports activities and an occasional round of golf. Over the years, my involvement with the West Virginia Orthopaedic Society slowly grew as I began to understand its workings but, more importantly, its PURPOSE. It became much more than a collection of steadfast members sharing opinions. For me, I watched its evolution to include the ever-growing population of orthopaedic surgeons in the state who share a commonality despite differences and practice style, such as academic centers, private community positions and increasing employment models of our colleagues.
