How to prepare for and prevent pet emergencies this

hile Fourth of July fireworks are an exhilarating American tradition, these chemical-filled mini-rockets often cause anxiety for our furry friends.

In the days surrounding Independence Day, shelters and rescues in the U.S. are inundated with runaway pets. Animal control officials report a 30 to 60% increase in lost pets between July 4 and 6, according to PetAmberAlert.com.

Additionally, calls spike to the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) about pets ingesting fireworks.

Most Fourth of July pet emergencies are preventable with a little preparedness. Read on for ways to keep your dogs, cats, bunnies, and other beloved pets safe on and around July 4.

KEEP PETS INDOORS

This seems like a no-brainer, but a pet that is locked up inside a house during Fourth of July festivities can’t run away. Outdoors cats may give you guff for refusing to let them roam, but they’ll thank you later (in their own catty way).

Even leaving your dog in a gated backyard or walking the dog unleashed is extra dangerous during the Fourth of July season. People tend to set off fireworks at random times, and the sounds and smells may frighten an animal into bolting.

Double-check that the gate in your yard is strong, secure, and dog-escape-proof.

TIRED PETS ARE BETTER THAN WIRED PETS

If your pet is staying home alone while you’re at a fireworks show, give them ample opportunity to burn

off energy beforehand. Go to the dog park, play fetch, or take an extra-long walk. Not only will they get lots of exercise, but they’ll be able to relieve themselves, so you can avoid coming home to indoor accidents.

CREATE A SAFE ROOM

Provide your pets with access to a quiet, comfortable area in an interior room away from windows. You can even play relaxing music or turn on their favorite television show for background noise.

If you will be home while the fireworks are booming, stay with your pet and comfort them. If you won’t be home, consider a crate or carrier.

Along with creating this safe room, make sure all the windows and doors in your home are closed. Blackout curtains will reduce visual impact from fireworks on pets.

MAKE SURE YOUR PET HAS A PROPER ID

An up-to-date microchip and a collar with an ID tag are key to a happy reunion when pets get lost or run away. Since collars can break or fall off, microchipping is the only permanent form of identification. It’s an easy, inexpensive procedure that can be performed by a vet or at shelters such as the Nevada NSPCA and The Animal Foundation.

It’s also the law in Las Vegas for all dogs and cats over four months old.

KEEP FIREWORKS OUT OF REACH

Keep your dog away from fireworks, and keep fireworks away from your dog.

Fireworks and sparklers not only cause burns, but they also contain heavy metals and other chemicals. Glow sticks, in particular, are highly toxic and easily ingested.

If you set off fireworks at home, clean up as soon as you’re done, before your dog has a chance to inspect the launch area.

TALK TO YOUR VET

If you have any questions or concerns, talk to your veterinarian.

Vets can provide advice about anti-anxiety medication and other calming techniques, such as calming sprays, pheromone diffusers, and anxiety wraps.

DOG ON THE RUN?

Don’t panic if your pet runs away, and don’t chase after the animal. Instead, try walking around the neighborhood where the pet was lost, posting on social media, and uploading a photo to Petco Love Lost, which uses facial recognition to match found pets and also checks The Animal Foundation’s Lost and Found page.

Also, call The Animal Foundation’s pet support hotline at 702-955-5932 for assistance. It’s open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., to help those who have lost or found a pet.

homeless animals day Saturday, August 15, 2026 Introduced in 1992, the third Saturday of August every year has been set aside to recognize National Homeless Animals Day. The International Society for Animal Rights (ISAR) established this day to educate and raise awareness about the problem of pet overpopulation and the resulting overwhelming number of homeless animals, and to pay tribute to shelter/rescue workers who work tirelessly to help homeless animals.

Most animals that enter shelters are not “street” animals or offspring of other homeless animals, but puppies and kittens of family pets.

What Dogs Teach Us About Living in the Moment

We live during a time when there are so many different ways to learn: A physical or online school, YouTube, books, any AI (artificial intelligence) platform, and more!

However, there is one professional trainer we may have overlooked. The one with the floppy ears, wagging tail and writhing body.

Yup! Your own dog!

Our dogs can’t speak our language, but they are intelligent enough to convey their needs and fears, and have a sixth type of sense that can also interpret OUR needs and fears!

NOTHING LIKE THE PRESENT

We live our lives like a hamster on a wheel, don’t we? On most days, relaxation is a foreign term that only exists in our fantasies.

There is work, family time, chores, and the occasional socialization.

We tend to worry about the future, while regretting some of the past, often feeling nostalgic for days gone by. (Of course, the “days gone by” were spent worrying about today). It’s a vicious cycle, isn’t it?

Our dogs, on the other hand, live in the moment. They don’t spend their days thinking about a rabbit they didn’t catch,

or a squirrel that scurried up a tree. They are happy because they are simply spending time with their favorite friends right now!

You may notice that they often suggest you do the same. Those nose nudges while you’re working, the seemingly needless barking when you are in deep concentration?

Those aren’t random. It’s your dog saying, “Hey, take a break! Let’s play! Let’s snuggle.”

After you oblige, don’t you feel better than you did only moments ago?

vacation. Looking back, I can still see those wonderful snapshots in time. I can still hear the laughter and still see joy on my friends’ and families’ faces. Sometimes, even with photos, we tend to miss the rest of the picture that was happening right around us.

Back then, we made TRUE connections, just as our dogs do every single day!

They remind us not to take life so seriously!

They encourage us to live in the present.

They show us that ordinary moments are the ones that our future selves will remember so fondly!

We might have taught them commands, but even in difficult times, they show US how to STAY.

JOY WITHOUT ACHIEVEMENTS

Have you ever noticed dogs rejoicing if they ran faster than another dog? Or, dogs counting how many steps they took in one day?

Neither have I. They are grateful for smaller things.

While it’s great to set goals, we tend to base our happiness solely on the outcome. We rarely run in the park for the sake of running.

Think about how freeing it would be if we did!

What if we realized that being present IS enough? With the advent of cell phones and computers as our social outlet, what would it feel like to put those aside, and normalize true and meaningful conversations?

It’s nice to take hundreds of photos, but couldn’t we simply record some of those as memories instead? I grew up without ever having a camera with me, unless on

Do Dogs Have

Best Friends?

Most dog owners have seen it happen. Your dog meets dozens of other dogs at the park, but there is one special companion that gets an enthusiastic greeting. Both dogs seem to enjoy their relationship. Studies and observation suggest that dogs can form strong bonds with other dogs.

Just like people, dogs have preferences. They may be drawn to companions with similar energy levels, play styles, or personalities.

For example, a shy dog may prefer a calm and gentle friend whereas a more active dog might prefer an active friend who likes to run and play tug of war.

My dog seems to prefer people to other dogs. She ignores most dogs on our walks, however, there is one dog she seems to love.

She knows where he lives and sits on the pavement longingly looking toward his home, waiting and hoping he comes out to play. If he comes out, they both do a happy dance, play a short

time and then she is content to go home. Though she enjoys these brief encounters, I think she is perfectly content with her human friendships.

Early positive socialization, personality, and past experiences all influence how dogs make friends. A dog’s friendship style can be shaped by past trauma or positive interactions. A dog that was bullied by a larger dog may prefer the friendship of smaller dogs or develop a generalized fear of all dogs. It’s important to accept that not every dog wants a dog friend. Some only like a few other dogs; and some don’t like other dogs at all.

Dogs have an amazing ability to form strong social bonds offering affection, trust, and companionship in many relationships.

Cats Cool: Summer Safety Tips for Pet Parents As temperatures rise, it’s important to remember that cats can struggle with the heat as much as dogs do. Felines are experts at finding sunny spots for a nap, however, summer heat can quickly become dangerous if they don’t have a cool place to escape.

SO, HOW HOT IS TOO HOT?

Generally, most cats are comfortable in environments between 60 – 80 F. HOW CAN WE HELP OUR CATS BEAT THE HEAT?

Unlike humans, cats do not sweat through their skin to cool down. They have sweat glands in their noses, lips, and paw pads, but these play only a minor role in regulating their body temperature. Cats cool themselves primarily through grooming. Their saliva cools them down as it evaporates much like sweating. They’re constantly losing moisture through licking and grooming. Adequate water intake is essential to produce enough salvia to cool them down and avoid the risk of dehydration and overheating. Make sure fresh water is always available; consider placing multiple water bowls around your home to encourage drinking. Adding ice cubes to their water bowls is another incentive to encourage them to drink. Some cats enjoy moving water and may benefit from having a pet water fountain available. Another option is providing cat grass for a cat that needs some extra hydration. Fresh grass has naturally high-water content and can give your cat a quick, natural moisture boost.

Cats naturally will seek for cool spots to rest and relax. They will often stretch out on cold tile floors, in sinks, or inside bathtubs. Cooling mats can provide comfortable places for them to enjoy a cool nap.

For cats that spend some time outdoors, make sure they have access to plenty of shade and fresh water. It is best to keep them indoors during times of extreme heat. Outdoor-only cats should always have access to shade and water, and should never be left in enclosed spaces such as garages, sheds, or vehicles.

HOW TO TELL IF YOUR CAT IS EXPERIENCING HEAT STRESS OR OVERHEATING -

One of the first signs that a cat is overheating is excessive panting. Unlike dogs, cats rarely pant unless they are stressed or too hot. Other warning signs include rapid breathing, lethargy, excessive drooling, weakness, vomiting, difficulty walking, and bright red gums. In severe cases, a cat may stagger, collapse, or become unresponsive. Is More Than a Skin Problem The Hidden Link Between Nerve Pain and Hot Spots in Dogs and Cats

M

ost pet owners think of hot spots as a skin issue caused by allergies, fleas, moisture, or excessive licking. While these are common causes, there is another often-overlooked reason some dogs and cats develop persistent hot spots: underlying nerve pain from spinal problems.

August is Itchy Pet Awareness Month, making it the perfect time to look beyond common skin conditions and explore some of the less obvious causes of itching, licking, and chewing. While allergies are frequently blamed, discomfort originating from the spine and nervous system may also play an important role in some pets.

What Is a Hot Spot?

A hot spot, also known as acute moist dermatitis, is an area of irritated, inflamed skin that becomes red, painful, and often moist from excessive licking, chewing, or scratching.

Hot spots can appear suddenly and may grow rapidly within hours.

While allergies and skin infections are common culprits, repeated licking or chewing can also be triggered by discomfort that originates deeper within the body.

The Connection Between the Spine and the Skin The spinal cord acts as the body’s communication highway, sending messages between the brain and the rest of the body.

When a spinal condition causes pressure or irritation on a nerve, pets may experience abnormal sensations such as tingling, burning, numbness, or pain. This condition is called radiculopathy.

Unlike humans, our pets cannot tell us when they feel these sensations. Instead, they often respond by licking, chewing, scratching, or obsessively grooming the area where the 22

nerve discomfort is perceived.

Common spinal conditions that may contribute to nerve pain include: • Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD)

Treatment may include: • Therapeutic exercises • Manual therapy • Laser therapy

• Degenerative lumbosacral disease

• Mobility and strengthening programs

• Arthritis affecting the spine

• Pain management strategies

• Spinal injuries or trauma

• Home exercise recommendations

• Nerve root compression The result can be a hot spot that repeatedly returns despite treatment of the skin itself.

Signs Your Pet’s Hot Spot May Be Related to Nerve Pain In addition to licking or chewing, watch for: • Sensitivity when touched along the back or neck • Difficulty jumping onto furniture or into vehicles • Changes in posture • Weakness in the limbs • Reluctance to exercise • Stiffness after resting • Changes in gait or coordination Cats are particularly skilled at hiding pain and may simply overgroom one area, leading owners to assume the problem is behavioral or dermatological.

How Physical Rehabilitation Can Help Animal physical rehabilitation focuses on identifying and addressing the underlying cause of discomfort. A rehabilitation professional can assess mobility, strength, posture, balance, and nerve function to determine whether a spinal issue may be contributing to excessive licking or scratching.

By reducing nerve irritation and improving movement, many pets become more comfortable and less likely to continue self-traumatizing the skin.

Looking Beyond the Surface During Itchy Pet Awareness Month, pet owners are encouraged to remember that not all itching originates from the skin. If your dog or cat develops recurring hot spots that do not seem to have an obvious dermatologic cause, it may be worth discussing spinal health and nerve pain with your veterinarian.

Sometimes the skin is simply revealing a deeper problem. Recognizing the connection between nerve pain and hot spots can lead to earlier diagnosis, more effective treatment, and most importantly, improved comfort and quality of life for our beloved companions.

here is something special about the bond between people and animals. No matter our age, pets have a remarkable ability to make us smile, reduce stress, and brighten our day. For seniors in assisted living communities, that bond means a lot.

Many seniors have spent a lifetime sharing their homes with beloved pets. When they move into an assisted living community, they may have to leave those companions behind due to health concerns, housing restrictions, or the everyday challenges of caring for a pet.

That’s why pet-friendly communities can make such a tremendous difference. In the communities I visit with my non-profit, Seniors To The Rescue, some have house pets, which everyone gets to enjoy every day, as well as visiting pets. You can see the joy on the seniors faces whenever pets are with them and the pets feel the same, especially when they get extra treats.

Research has shown that spending time with animals can help lower blood pressure, reduce feelings of anxiety and loneliness, and increase overall happiness. But for seniors, pets provide something even more important, companionship. A wagging tail, a gentle purr, or even a quick visit from a therapy animal can spark memories, encourage conversation, and create social connections.

We see the benefits firsthand every month, when we visit assisted living communities and bring hands-on projects that seniors create for local animal rescues and shelters. These projects include making pet blankets, bagging treats, putting together toys, and assembling supplies that directly benefit the rescues and pets waiting for their forever homes. What makes these activities so special is that the seniors aren’t simply participating in a craft project, they’re helping animals in need.

The moment we start talking about the pets who will be receiving their projects, they share stories and pictures about the pets they’ve

had. You can see how much they miss having pets of their own, but also talk about how they love that they’re making a difference. We always bring pictures of the dogs, cats, bunnies and guinea piggies with the items they’ve made, which they love. Before we leave, they want to know when we’ll be back and what project we’ll be doing.

It truly makes a difference in our day.

Purpose is something that often gets overlooked as people age, yet it plays a vital role in emotional well-being. Knowing that their efforts matter and that they are helping another living creature can be incredibly powerful.

Pet visits offer similar benefits. When dogs, cats, or other animals visit a community, residents who may normally stay in their rooms often come out to participate. Recently one of the assisted living communities had a farm day. I can’t even describe in words, the smiles that were on their faces. One of the residents, David, was holding a rooster and he was beaming. Residents who may be struggling with memory challenges frequently recall stories about pets from years ago. The animals create moments of connection that might not otherwise happen.

Perhaps the greatest gift pets provide is unconditional love. They don’t care about age, mobility, or limitations. They simply offer affection, comfort, and companionship.

Whether it’s a resident caring for a pet, enjoying a visit from a therapy animal, or creating items for shelter pets, the impact is undeniable. Pets have a unique ability to bring people together, improve emotional wellness, and remind us that we all have something valuable to give.

Gantu lived a very happy and spoiled life filled with love, blankets, and stuffed toys. As he grew older, cataracts developed in both of his eyes, and he felt safest indoors where he could easily find his way around with the help of his loving sister. Later, he was diagnosed with lung cancer that eventually spread. He loved his vet at VCA Hualapai Animal Hospital.

Lilo loved her family dearly and lived a very happy and spoiled life. Pillows, blankets, and stuffed toys were some of her favorite things.

One of her happiest traditions was enjoying dinner at Lazy Dog Restaurant & Bar, where she even celebrated her 15th birthday.

Wiley was a beloved son, grandpup, and cherished member of our family who brought joy to everyone who knew him. After the loss of his two fur cousins, Wiley passed away heartbroken, leaving an enormous void in our lives. He adored visits from Danielle at Barking Dogs Mobile Grooming and loved his veterinarian at Boca Park Animal Hospital.

Wiley enjoyed daily walks, homemade steak treats, trips to Total Wine & More, and most of all, spending time with his family.

Gantu leaves behind his sister, mom, dad, auntie, and cousin, all of whom miss him deeply. For the last eight months of his life, I became Gantu’s full-time caregiver with help from Lilo and Wiley. Gantu had an incredible heart and soul, and even when his body failed him, his spirit never did.

Lilo became my support pet and helped me through many health challenges. As she aged, she developed dental disease, a stage 2 heart murmur, and dementia. Lilo also loved her vet at VCA Hualapai Animal Hospital. After losing her brother to cancer, she passed away from what felt like a broken heart. Lilo lived a full and beautiful life, filled with love, adventures, and many special memories with her family.

He leaves behind his devoted dad, Justin J., two grandpas, one grandma, and many loved ones who cared for him deeply. Wiley was treasured beyond words and will be forever loved, missed, and remembered.

Thank you to everyone for the prayers, love, and support shown not only to Gantu, Lilo, and Wiley, but also to our family. The sympathy cards touched my heart more than words can express.

In their memory, all of their belongings are being donated to Hearts Alive Village Clinic to help other pets in need, and I will continue donating pet supplies to support animals in their honor. ~ Ms Lightfoot

A BOND THAT TRANSCENDS TIME

➠ Tell us a little bit about your cockatiel.

Sunny was hatched on April 10th of 2020. She’s a pandemic birdy and belonged to my mom, Violet, who lovingly hand-raised her. She was technically named “Sunshine,” but we all called her Sunny for short. My mom absolutely ADORED her. She had a cage that was opened all day long, so Sunny would fly all around my mom’s TV-room and was a wonderful companion for her.

She would even let my mom give her little kisses.

➠ How did you acquire Sunny?

In 2021, my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. She put up the bravest fight; but as her health declined, she had less and less of an ability to look after Sunny- so I volunteered to take her from LA to Vegas. Once my mom lost her battle with cancer in 2025, Sunny was officially mine. In some ways, Sunny is one of the most significant lives in my orbit, simply for the fact that she was given to me by my mom.

Anyone who has ever lost someone they loved and inherited their pet, probably understands- there’s a deep soul-connection that is forged…because they are this last living link between themselves and the person they lost.

Sunny means the world to me.

Ashley Reeve shares the beautiful story of Sunny, her beloved cockatiel and a lasting gift from her mom, Violet.

➠ Has your relationship with Sunny changed over the years?

Oh, most definitely! When she belonged to my mom, she didn’t like me very much. She was strictly a mama’s-girl, and would hiss at me (or just about anyone) like a cat, and try to bite me if I got too close to her. I think it’s common for solo cockatiels to pick “their person.” Now that my mom is gone, I’m her person.

She’s gotten so attached to me now.

She still doesn’t let me pet her, but she loves being on my shoulder or head and pretty much wants to be ON me, in some capacity, all day long. She now tolerates me kissing her and will fly to my hand the moment I open her cage each morning.

➠ If Sunny could talk, what do you think her life motto would be?

“I love you! Don’t touch me,” followed by a hiss.

➠ Do you have any favorite memories of Sunny?

On one of my deepest days of grief, shortly after my mom had just passed, I had tears streaming down my face, and Sunny just walked over to my shoulder and kissed each little tear off of my face… it’s like she was drinking my sorrow and replacing it with love.

➠ Do you have a favorite memory of Sunny with your mother?

My mom used to sing that sweet song to her daily, “You are my sunshine, my only sunshine…” Sometimes I’ll whistle that melody to her, in hopes that somewhere in her sweet little birdy memories, perhaps it sounds familiar.

What Sunny Taught Me About Loyalty & Friendship

If I judged Sunny purely on how she used to perceive me, I wouldn’t have given her a chance. She’s taught me that trust takes time, and it’s absolutely worth the dedication; through all the hisses, bites, poops and cage messes… that birds are just little angels on earth; our little dinosaur-descendants… and that they’re absolutely capable of showing love, especially on the days we need it the most. They’re super perceptive and way more brilliant than people realize. I’m beyond grateful to share my life with such a magical little creature, who’s this perfect little symbol of the love that was unconditionally, and infinitely shared between my mom and I.

When Pets Won't Go Outside

ey Kids! Yeah, it’s summer! Oh no, it’s getting hot! If you had a fur coat, would you want to play outdoors? Think about it. Are there days when your pets won’t go outside? Experts say there are other reasons animals don’t want to leave their house. When animals get older, they may have pain or hearing or eyesight loss like your grandparents.

New pets who are scared or sense possible danger may not want to venture out. What could they be smelling and hearing? No matter where they live, pets react to sounds, smells, and dark skies. Can you guess the number one reason pets stay inside? It’s the weather! Animals are sensitive to climate! How’s the weather where you live?

Meteorologists watch weather to keep us safe.

Here are examples of what they track.

SUMMER WARNINGS IN DIFFERNT REGIONS Hawaii and Pacific Coast: High humidity and heat, storms, and high waves.

BROWNIE AMERICA’S RAILROAD DOG

A special thank you to Paul Koudounaris for sharing a brief story from his newest book, Go West, Young Dog!. If you love history, trains and, of course, dogs, you will love this book. Paul shared that he fell madly in love with the stories of the “railroad dogs”. He said they’re so special and had such an amazing place in American history. Their stories are filled with courage, resilience and adventure. there were lights, and he could hear voices.

Following the line of the rails, he forced his broken body towards the strangers, straining against the limits of what he could bear, until he collapsed onto the tiled floor of the train station. It took all he had left to look up at the work crew and cry out for help.

They named him Brownie, after the color of his coat. He wasn’t all brown though, he had a touch of brindle, and some streaks of white that ran boldly along his snout and chest to give him a little bit of a dignified air. It’s doubtful he knew how close he had come to dying that night, but he understood that the railroad men had saved him. Hard men but with soft hearts, they treated him with kindness, and he decided he was going to stick by them no matter what. That was

rownie’s story began on a rainy night in Victorville in 1943, when a car swerved on the highway. The driver righted the wheel and sped off, but not before hitting a bump in the darkness.

It was no bump. A little brown dog, an anonymous stray, had been badly injured.

Summoning what strength he had left, he pushed himself onto the embankment along which the railroad tracks ran and began crawling through the rain. Ahead

fine by the men, since they liked having him around. They started letting him ride the trains, and Brownie soon got to know all the stations throughout the Mojave Desert.

It was wartime back then, there was rationing going on and shortages of basic supplies. But the men were concerned enough about Brownie getting decent food that they all agreed to donate part of their meat quota to him. Everyone gave a little, and it was enough to help him fill out quick, he grew real strong. Best anyone could reckon, he was equal parts terrier and bulldog, not big but tough as nails.

This was something other dogs learned if they came snooping around the station. It was his station now, and he would stand his ground and make quick work of chasing them away, no matter how much they might outweigh him.

And when I say it was his station, I mean it literally: within a year of his arrival he had been promoted to stationmaster in Victorville. Stationmaster! That was something that no dog could claim, and as word about it spread through the desert, more than a few people stopped by to meet him, routing through Victorville so they could say they had the honor of meeting the only canine stationmaster in the country.

Of course, the people who visited would be lucky to catch him at his desk. There were trains to ride!

Paul Koudounaris is an author, photographer, and historian whose work explores the relationships between humans and animals throughout history.

Brownie stuck with the men he loved until he died in a tragic rail accident in 1945. He was buried outside the station, but as decades passed the old depot fell into disuse and people forgot his story. But his human friends remembered, and when a bulldozer arrived to pulverize the grounds, they came out in protest. The old men refused to allow Brownie’s grave to be defiled. A comprise was reached, and it was moved across the street, to the Route 66 Museum, where it can be visited to this day.
