NO AGENDA NEEDED FOR THIS GLVAR PRESIDENT MESSAGE from 2019 GLVAR PRESIDENT JANET CARPENTER

As I prepared to be installed as president of GLVAR for 2019, many of my friends and fellow members asked me what my agenda would be for this year-long position leading the largest professional and trade association in Southern Nevada. As I’ve told everyone who asked, I don’t have a big agenda. Here’s the thing: I’m following four previous presidents, three of whom were relatively young men, who made a wide range of changes to our association. They did a fine job of moving GLVAR forward in many areas and of meeting our mission of protecting private property rights and representing the interests of local homeowners, as well as our more than 14,000 members. As a member of our Board of Directors during the past few years, I was involved in these initiatives and believe the vast majority of these decisions were for the best – or at least made with the best intentions. One of the best and most obvious changes for our GLVAR members, staff and others who interact with GLVAR is the beautiful new headquarters building we opened this past year on Rainbow Boulevard, just north of the 215 Beltway. With all this change in a relatively short period of time, I believe we need to take the time to settle in a bit this year and look at what is working and what is not necessarily working as well as we’d like – and then act accordingly. So, if I had to describe my vision for 2019, it would include words like steady, stable and strong. Based on recent trends, I suspect this might also be a pretty fair description of what’s in store for our industry, our community and our healthy local housing market this year. I’m a former elementary school teacher who was raised as a “military brat.” I started my real estate career here in Las Vegas in 1983. Over the years, I’ve had the good fortune of working with many of our most active GLVAR members and leaders. I hope I’ve learned a few things along the way. As anyone who knows me can attest, I also believe in an open-door policy. As a result, I intend to continue working closely with my fellow board members, including 2019 GLVAR President-elect Tom Blanchard, our GLVAR staff and members and leaders of our community and local real estate industry in the most open and transparent way possible. Finally, I want to thank my predecessors, including 2018 GLVAR President Chris Bishop and our entire 2018 Board of Directors, for leaving our association – and our place in the community and the industry – in better shape than when they started. I think this is an admirable goal and something all our previous presidents have strived to do. I look forward to doing the same. GLVAR was founded in 1947 and provides its more than 14,000 local members with education, training and political representation. The local representative of the National Association of REALTORS®, GLVAR is the largest professional organization in Southern Nevada.
