Mayor’s

The County of Hawai'i has released its first Food Self-Sufficiency Baseline Study, a report which outlines the current state of food production on Hawai‘i Island. The report was prepared by Jeffrey Melrose and Dr. Donna Delparte of the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo’s Geography and Environmental Studies Department in response to recommendations contained in the 2010 County Agricultural Development Plan. It provides a summary of Hawai‘i Island’s food demand and compares that to locally produced food types. The study also conducted a detailed mapping effort to locate existing agricultural activity on the island as a 2012 baseline to document what crops we grow where and what resources and factors support farm activities around the island. This baseline study provides a summary of currently available data on a wide variety of food and farm related factors that will help the community gauge the current status of local food self reliance and to monitor changes over time. It is intended to help inform future discussions and improve the quality of the dialogue on these important issues. The report is the first of its kind in the state and also provides a template for other counties to consider the current state of their local food production capacity.

County of Hawaii A pair of supporting documents was also released with the baseline study. One is a list of 100 Things to Do to Make a Difference, recommendations to support progress towards increased food self-sufficiency on Hawai‘i Island. Collected during the preparation of the baseline study, the list points to the fact that food self-sufficiency is everyone’s kuleana and not just a matter of increasing local commercial food productivity. Food self-sufficiency will require fundamental rethinking about how we interact with the food that we eat and how we value the local economic and nutritional value of a locally produced diet. Also part of the study is a Food Self Sufficiency Scorecard, which points out some surprising statistics. For instance, virtually all of our milk is produced on Hawai'i Island, but almost none of our other dairy products – sour cream, butter, etc. – is from here. It also comes as no surprise that more than half of our fish is caught locally, but it may surprise some that less than 20 percent of the beef we consume here and virtually none of our poultry or eggs is produced here. We all know we have to commit to moving toward food self sufficiency.
