Design Recognition FOR UK GOVERNMENT

State bureaucracies are not usually celebrated for being in the vanguard of contemporary design but the UK Government has – perhaps surprisingly – triumphed in the 2013 Design Museum Awards. The website GOV.UK was judged the overall winner of the Design of the Year Award 2013, with the jury praising it for “its well thought out yet understated design, making the user experience faster and easier”. Regarded as one of the leading government websites in the world, the Government Dig-

ital Service-designed GOV.UK combines all of the UK government’s websites into a single domain. The other six category winners included the renovation and re-imagining of a faded 1960s tower block in Paris; a landmark documentary on fashion icon Diana Vreeland; a re-invention of the wheel in the form of a unique folding wheel that can be applied to bicycles and wheelchairs; and a chair constructed using the latest computer technology. www.designmuseum.org
