Mission Statement Holy Love Evangelical Lutheran Church is committed to proclaiming and living the Good News of God's love in Jesus Christ as we gather for worship and study and scatter for witness and service to our neighbors.

People of God at Holy Love, As I’m writing this, it’s a beautiful day outside. It’s a sunny day, not too windy, the temperature is pleasant, bulbs are starting to bloom in garden beds – it’s just a beautiful day. As I write this, though, if you were to ask me to bet on the weather, I’d put my money on at least one more snowstorm here in the metro area. Even though the weather says spring, I’m confident that we’ll feel winter at least once more. The thing is, while some aspects of our Colorado weather may be unpredictable (I think most of us have experienced four seasons worth of weather in one day), other aspects can be pretty reliable. For instance, you can’t tell in September which January days are going to have 70° weather, and which aren’t going get above freezing. But you can pretty reliably bet that we’ll have both of those kind of days during January. Likewise, I can’t tell you now which specific day in October it’ll snow … but I bet dollars to donuts that one day before Halloween will be slushy. In a similar way, the life of a church community can be at the same time unpredictable and fairly reliable. For instance, consider ministry staffing. In my time so far at Holy Love, we’ve had two Faith Formation Program Directors. Between the tenures of those two, we helped to educate a couple of seminary interns. Toward the end of Trey’s time here, we knew that Holly would be arriving within a matter of months. But we didn’t know how the second intern would be similar to and different from the first. Likewise, when we decided to call a Faith Formation Director, many of us remembered Julie and the good work she did in that role. We knew someone new would be filling that position, but we didn’t know how Jennifer would be similar to and different from Julie until she’d been here for a while. And now we find ourselves in a position as a congregation where we’ve said with a good deal of certainty that we’re interested in filling the role of Faith Formation Director again. But the truth is, there’s no way to know what the person who we find for that position will be like. The may be very similar to someone we’ve known; they may be completely different. And the further truth is that we don’t really even know what kind of position we’ll be creating, or what the job description will really look like. We do have a very good team taking a look at those questions, but nothing’s finalized yet. ...continued on page 2 1

SCHOOL NEWS By Mary Stephenson, Director The beginning of month #8 is upon us—school year month #8, that is. Wow! I can’t believe we are nearing the end of school year 2016-2017. Time flies way too fast when we think we are having fun! March came in like a lamb, more or less. We expected the weather to change to the snow during March, but we were blessed to have very mild days. With the milder weather, it allowed the children and staff fun in the sun while enjoying the wonders of the outdoors. Some days those walls close in and everyone feels the need to run and skip and ride bikes. So March weather was a very good gift! The Jr. K and Kindergarten classes held their annual obstacle course days the first of the month. The Fellowship hall was set up with a variety of items for the children to crawl through or under, jump or bounce to complete the timed process. A lot of cheering was heard when each child took their turn. After the completion of the course, each child received a medal and certificate. It was a good work-out for the children. We had another wonderful worship time with Pastor Matthew. This month he used another new musical instrument—a banjo along with his guitar. Using a volunteer, he had that person hold the banjo directly in front of the guitar. As he strummed the guitar the music came through the banjo. We had to be very quiet to hear it, but it was amazing. The sound came through one instrument to another just as God’s love comes through us to give to others. Wow, what an awesome story. Thank you, Pastor Matthew for sharing God’s word with us. We managed to have class pictures and retakes this month, too. One of our Kindergarten parents, Mr. Rick Henson, brought his Steel Band to our school for an awesome performance. His youngest son is in our Kindergarten class. There were several varieties of drums, guitars and other musical instruments shared. He talked to the children about each item and the songs they played. Mr. Henson is the owner of Rocky Mountain Steel Bands. He also offers classes. Everyone enjoyed the performance and learning about the different instruments used. Thank you for bringing your band to us and sharing your talents. 6

Did anyone see those wee little green men running around here? We celebrated the “Green” and somehow those Leprechauns managed to sneak right into the classrooms and mess everything up. The Kindergarten children all created their own special traps just to catch a wee little leprechaun. And wouldn’t you know it, they did! After messing up the rooms, the Leprechaun left each child a gold coin and Hershey kisses. The chatter that went on when leaving those days was quite powerful……..so cute to hear their perspective on how the Leprechauns managed to get into the school. We also had Crazy Hat Days these same days. We had a parade through the school for parents and friends showing off our crazy hats. Everyone had a great time, and we saw some pretty unique hats. Thank you to our parents for sticking around to watch the parade. Sounds like too much fun goes on around here, hmm. But never fear—learning is still here. Of course, we can’t neglect learning a new letter each week, a new number and many different crafts/projects to go along with the themes. There also was color day in amongst the learning, too. Whew……..these teachers work very hard and so do the children. We all are looking forward to spring break at the end of the month. PTO held a Spirit Night at Panda Express. Thank you to all who participated and supported this event. March was the month of a change in the seasons. Have you noticed the signs of spring all around? How exciting to see the buds popping out in the trees, the flowers peeking up from a cold winters nap, the birds singing in the trees. New life surrounds us all. What a gift from God! This is a perfect time for you and your child to take a walk around the yard, around the block or at a park to explore the signs of spring. Did you see the lady bugs or other insects crawling around? Always remind your child where these gifts come from and don’t forget to thank God for His many gifts. Looking ahead, we will be focusing on Easter, class parties and lots of other fun things. You will read all about it next month! Will we be blessed with April showers of rain or April showers of snow? We will just wait and see what God has planned for us!

HAPPY SPRING! HAPPY EASTER!

Outreach Program for Holy Love Volunteers Tuesday, April 11th at Christ the Savior Spring Fest Clean Up Day Mark your calendars for Saturday, April 22 for the Holy Love Spring Fest Clean Up Day. We will begin at 8:30 and lunch will be provided at 12noon. We will be doing many outdoor projects including spreading of mulch, trimming trees, shrubs and bushes. Please bring rakes, shovels, wheelbarrows, hedge trimmers, loppers and tree trimmers. Don’t forget the gloves and sunscreen! Thanks for your willingness to serve.

Volunteers and Donations Still Needed! Holy Love’s 9Health Fair Friday, April 28th, 2017 7am - 12noon Volunteers and Food Donations are still needed to make the day a success! You can sign up on the bulletin boards in the Narthex, go online, or call Keely in the office to help out. All volunteers get 20% off bloodwork for the day! Online Registration is live! Please go and register to participate or volunteer at www.9healthfair.org . Everyone will need to create a new profile as the website has changed. Sign up sheets are also on the kiosks in the Narthex.

April 11th is Holy Love’s night to provide and serve the meal for Family Promise families at Christ the Savior Lutheran Church located at 1092 S. Nome Street, Aurora 80012. If you are interested in helping with this outreach program, please let me know: Jean Roenfeldt at 303-690-4326 or email me at roenfeldt4@aol.com. Refresher 101 for the volunteer opportunity: Holy Love provides the evening meal which consists of Sloppy Joe’s & buns, potato chips, salad/vegetables/baked beans, and cookies/bars/cake/dessert of some sort. Volunteers this is our menu every time, easy and you can pick and choose what you would like to provide and on what date. If you can help serve an evening, I would appreciate the help. Time is usually 5:15 – 7:15 pm. Background on the Family Promise Program: Holy Love has partnered in helping Christ the Savior Lutheran Church with the Family Promise Shelter Program which provides shelter for homeless families to cope with their current housing crisis. Guests in the program are provided shelter at the Family Promise Day Site and are then transported by van to Host Congregations for the overnight shelter. Host Congregations provide this shelter for a whole week at a time and usually consist of 3-5 families. Future dates for 2017, if you would like to volunteer but can’t this time are: June 20th; August 29th; November 14th. Thanks for your consideration in volunteering with our sister congregation in Aurora.

(Another) Fall Art Show

Needed: New Librarian for our Church Library Several years ago, Brenda Pease, Bernice Wallace and I (with the help of Ted Spears and, now, Leigh Brazee for the computer part of the system) spent hours reconstructing the HLLC library - cataloging, developing a computer program for our system, labeling books, collecting donations, etc. so that we had a workable and user friendly check-out system for our congregational and pre-school members. I think it’s been pretty successful and used by many. For several years, I had volunteers sign up for a month at a time to keep the library orderly and that was extremely helpful. I attempted to inform the congregation, through the Mission Bell, about some of the books we had on hand to help promote an interest - but wasn’t able to keep up with this in the way I would have liked. This past year or so, I haven’t had anyone show an interest in becoming involved with the workings of the library. Due to these circumstances and due to my own personal interests and conflicts over the last couple of years, I have decided to “resign” from being in charge. As of the end of May, I will, hopefully, be handing over the responsibilities (of which there are few) of keeping the library operating smoothly to another volunteer. I hope that we can find a congregational member who will fill in. I will show the new librarian how we’ve run the library in the past, but, of course, any improvements will be greatly appreciated! Please notify me if you are even remotely interested in becoming our new librarian. (Doing this in partnership with another is always a possibility, too.) Thank you, Holly Thorstad 303.751.1091

Almost 4 years ago (has it really been that long?!), Holy Love had its first Art Show, displaying and selling art made by our own parishioners and their families. It was very successful and we were able to donate 30% of our proceeds back to the church and community. We heard a lot of positive observations afterwards and many wanted us to make it a yearly (or so) happening. Well, Vern Roenfeldt and I have decided to have another HLLC Art Show this October - exact weekend to be determined. As with the past show, we will limit our art to the fine arts (paintings, drawings, pastels, etc), computer generated art and photography, ceramics and pottery, and sculpture. We will not be including jewelry and crafts. Being a presenting artist will be open to Holy Love members and their family members, but friends and community are encouraged to come and browse (and purchase!). Prices will be set by the artist and 30% of the sales will be going to a charity. We will be collecting the art on a Friday evening and will set up the following morning, with a show on Saturday afternoon/evening. The show and sale will run through Sunday morning, between services. We would love seeing even more presenters this year, so, please, all of you budding artists out there, be planning and preparing for the exhibit this October. We will be contacting you between now and the end of summer to give you more details and to find out how many pieces you want to enter, etc., so that we can plan for the show. All visual art must be matted; framing is optional, but it seems to sell better if it’s framed. We will, again, open this up to include high schoolers and adults. Please let Vern or me know if you’re interested and if you have any questions. Many thanks! Holly Thorstad 8

So stop the excuses and come join us as we cipitated the change but upon reflection I realized work together in stewardship. it just makes sense. Food Pantry Donations Needed

We have seen an increase in people accessing our food pantry, especially now that we have moved it into the coat closet where those who attend meetings at church in the evening can access it as they need it. Please consider donating non-perishable food items. Our greatest needs are protein sources, complete boxed meals (just add chicken or tuna), fruit, breakfast items, etc. Thanks. We also need Bags! 9
