GATHERING Call To Worship
Light One Candle to Watch for Messiah
Advent Candle Lighting O Come, Emmanuel. Bring your light into the world. A reading from Luke, quoting the prophet Isaiah. “Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight … and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.” In the beginning there was darkness. Into the darkness God spoke, saying “Let there be light” And there was Hope. light the first candle
Over time, we became anxious and dissatisfied. Greed, competition, restlessness, fighting, busy-ness, and noise filled the world. When agitation and conflict seemed overwhelming, God spoke, saying “Let there be light”. And there was Peace. We light this candle with confidence that God’s peace will endure. light the second candle
The light of Peace lifts our eyes and calls us forward through Advent. To a world of anxiety and chaos, it proclaims peace which passes all understanding. The second candle reminds us to be still and know peace. 2
The Lord be with you And also with you. Let us pray. O God, we wait for your salvation. Bless us this season, as we watch for Messiah. May the light of your Son banish the darkness of the world. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Gathering Hymn 1
O Come, O Come, Emmanuel
O come, O come, Emmanuel, and ransom captive Israel, that mourns in lonely exile here until the Son of God appear.
O come, O Branch of Jesse, free your own from Satan's tyranny; from depths of hell your people save, and give them vict'ry o'er the grave. Refrain
Refrain Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to you, O Israel.
O come, O Key of David, come, and open wide our heav'nly home; make safe the way that leads on high, and close the path to misery. Refrain
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you.
Prayer of the Day
The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Loving Lord, When we have strayed, you have called us to come home to you. “Return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; rend your hearts and not your clothing. With all our hearts we return to you, and gratefully accept your gentle love, for the sake of the one whose spirit lives in us, Jesus Christ our loving savior. Amen.

after the reading:
The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.
Following the sermon, we pause for a few moments of silence, expecting that God’s Holy Spirit will continue to speak to us
Hymn of the Day
Blessed Be the God of Israel
Let us together as one body, confess our faith in God. I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended into hell. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
As we anticipate the fullness of the presence of Christ, we join with the church throughout the world, praying for all who are in need.
after each petition:
Let us pray. Have mercy, O God.
the prayers conclude:
Merciful God, hear the prayers of your people, those spoken aloud and those known only to you, and grant us peace through Jesus Christ, our coming Savior. Amen.
The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you.
The people greet one another with a sign of Christ’s peace, saying “Peace be with you” or similar words.
Sharing Of Life And Ministry
(8:30) Wake, Awake (11:00) His Name is Life
Let us pray. Savior of the nations, come. Make your home here in us. Feed us with your love, that our faith shine ever new and our lives reveal your light. Amen.
It is our duty and delight ‌ we praise your name and join their unending hymn:
Blessed are you, O Lord our God... ...Do this for the remembrance of me. Let us proclaim the mystery of our faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Holy God, through your Holy Spirit, make us one with Christ, one with each other, and one in ministry to all the world, until Christ comes again and we feast at his table. Amen.
The Incarnate Christ is among us, and so with Christ we pray: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Hymns During Communion
My Soul Proclaims Your Greatness

Prayer After Communion

Lutheran Family Services Thanksgiving Basket Thank you HUGE thank you to all of you – you helped make this our most successful Thanksgiving food bag drive in years! Because of your generosity, we were able to provide 329 full Thanksgiving bags to our clients (who include the elderly, birth moms, adoptive families, foster families, and refugees), as well as several bags of extra food. We also had 327 gift cards donated, which were given to our clients to help them buy any additional food they need for Thanksgiving. It’s hard to put into words how appreciated your kindness is – many of the wonderful people we serve would not be able to have a Thanksgiving meal without these bags. Knowing that so many people at so many different churches are thinking of them makes our clients feel so special. I had the opportunity the other day to deliver the bags to where most of our older adults were waiting to pick them up, and I got to see their faces as they watched myself and a couple co-workers bring in load after load of food bags. They couldn’t stop saying thank-you, and their gratefulness was so evident on their faces. So thank you – we are incredibly blessed to have partners like you all as we serve the most vulnerable in our city! Happy Thanksgiving, Blythe Scott and the rest of the staff at LFS

The Second Sunday in Advent
Joel 2:12-13, 28-29
they confessed their sins, he baptized them in the Jordan River. 7 Many Pharisees and Sadducees came to be baptized by John. He said to them, “You children of snakes! Who warned you to escape from the angry judgment that is coming soon? 8 Produce fruit that shows you have changed your hearts and lives. 9 And don’t even think about saying to yourselves, Abraham is our father. I tell you that God is able to raise up Abraham’s children from these stones. 10 The ax is already at the root of the trees. Therefore, every tree that doesn’t produce good fruit will be chopped down and tossed into the fire. 11 I baptize with water those of you who have changed your hearts and lives. The one who is coming after me is stronger than I am. I’m not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. 12 The shovel he uses to sift the wheat from the husks is in his hands. He will clean out his threshing area and bring the wheat into his barn. But he will burn the husks with a fire that can’t be put out.”
Yet even now, says the Lord, return to me with all your hearts, with fasting, with weeping, and with sorrow; 13 tear your hearts and not your clothing. Return to the Lord your God, for he is merciful and compassionate, very patient, full of faithful love, and ready to forgive. 28 After that I will pour out my spirit upon everyone; your sons and your daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, and your young men will see visions. 29 In those days, I will also pour out my spirit on the male and female slaves. Matthew 3:1-12
Next Sunday’s Readings: Isaiah 61:1-11 Matthew 11:2-11
3 In those days John the Baptist appeared in the desert of Judea announcing, 2 “Change your hearts and lives! Here comes the kingdom of heaven!” 3 He was the one of whom Isaiah the prophet spoke when he said: The voice of one shouting in the wilderness, “Prepare the way for the Lord; make his paths straight.” 4
John wore clothes made of camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist. He ate locusts and wild honey. 5
People from Jerusalem, throughout Judea, and all around the Jordan River came to him. 6 As Scripture quotations noted CEB are taken from the Common English Bible, copyright 2011. Used by permission.
