Managing the OLAP cube Project Server 2007 uses the Cube Building service to build portfolio analyzer cubes. You can establish cube building settings, configure the cube’s dimensions, measures, and calculated members, and monitor the cube building status. The cube building service uses data and metadata generated from the Reporting database to build cubes for end-user reporting.

NOTE

The following is a one-time-only procedure.

The information that is stored in the Analysis Services Repository is used to build the OLAP cube. Initially, this information is stored in the format of an Access database. If you leave the information in this format, permissions for using the cube are difficult to control. Therefore, before you build the cube, you should migrate the Analysis Services Repository to an SQL Server database. This two-part process involves first creating an empty SQL database and then migrating the Analysis Services data into it. To create the SQL database, follow these steps: 1. Choose Start ➪ All Programs ➪ Microsoft SQL Server ➪ Enterprise Manager. You see the SQL Server Enterprise Manager window (see Figure 18.48).

FIGURE 18.48 Use this window to create a new SQL database.

2. Expand the tree in the left pane until you see the Databases folder. 3. Right-click the Databases folder and choose New Database from the shortcut menu that appears. You see the Database Properties dialog box. 4. In the Name text box, type a name for the database that is to hold the OLAP information (I called mine OLAPRepository) and click OK. 5. Close the SQL Server Enterprise Manager window.

2. Expand the tree in the left pane until you see the name of the server on which Analysis Services is installed. 3. Right-click the name of the Analysis Services server and choose Migrate Repository from the shortcut menu that appears to start the Migrate Repository Wizard. 4. On the first screen, choose Analysis Services native format and click Next. 5. On the next screen, enter the name of the server on which SQL Server is installed; then click Next. 6. On the next screen, choose the authentication method that you use to connect to the SQL server — either Windows Authentication or SQL Server authentication. If you use SQL Server authentication, enter your login ID and password.

8. When the process finishes, close the Analysis Manager window.

Configuring the cube You can use the Cube Configuration page (see Figure 18.51) to customize the OLAP cubes Project Server builds by adding custom fields as dimensions, measures, or calculated members. To display this page, click the Server Settings link in the Quick Launch pane on the left side of the Project Web Access window. Then, click the Configuration link in the Cube section of the Server Settings page.
