The Four Keys of Faith Formation

The Four Keys are provided to help you nourish your child’s / grandchild’s faith.

Scripture Readings for the Eighth Weekend after Pentecost:

Jeremiah 23:1-6; Psalm 23; Ephesians 2:11-22; Mark 6:30-34, 53-56 Family Devotions: Together, read the text from Ephesians. In his letter to the Ephesians, Paul says that Jesus came to bring people peace, both with God and with one another. How was this accomplished? How does the cross relate to having peace. Pray for God’s peace in your relationship with one another.

Caring Conversation: Discuss in your household or small group: Where is your favorite place to rest? Why? Jesus took his disciples away so that they could have some time alone with him and rest (Mark 6:31). When and where do you spedt time with Jesus? In what ways does time with Jesus refresh you? Family Service: As Lutherans, we believe that we respond to what we have heard through the Good News of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ – given for you for the forgiveness of sins. Good works (good fruit) happens, and we do not even know about it. As parents, you can “create” opportunities for your kids to learn about service, with the understanding that service is not a “have-to” but rather a “get-to” – a “response-to.” Having heard the Gospel preached, we move beyond ourselves, caring for our neighbor. Think about the Scripture verses for the week and the conversations you have shared. God has gifted you and your children with abilities, personalities, and certain qualities. As a parent, family member, or friend, you can help them discover their unique gifts by encouraging them in the things that they do well and feel passionate that they can serve others.

Family Traditions & Rituals: Jesus took his disciples away with him to a quiet place (Mark 6:31-32). Spend some time together in silence this week. Light a candle to represent the presence of Jesus with you. Focus on the candle in your silence, and then share with each other the thoughts that came to you during this time.

SCRIPTURE VERSE FOR THE WEEK: EPHESIANS 2:12-13 (NRSV)

“...remember that you were at that time without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.”
