Scripture Readings for the Sixth Weekend after Pentecost: Ezekiel 2:1-5; Psalm 123; 2 Corinthians 12:2-10; Mark 6:1-13
Christians do not boast of their own accomplishments. Rather, Christian boasting focuses attention on how the power of Christ is present in our lives, especially in times of weakness and vulnerability. No matter what circumstances in life, Christ’s grace is sufficient for us. Family Devotions: During this week, make a list of the ways you see God’s power at work, such as in nature, in other people, and in events around you. Give thanks for those things. Look up and discuss these verses that speak of God’s power: Mt. 19:26; 1 Ch. 29:12; 1 Co. 1:25; Ps. 89:8-9, 11, 13; Is. 40:28-31. Caring Conversation: Discuss in your household or small group: What is one of your strengths? What is one of your weaknesses? The apostle Paul wrote to the Christians in Corinth about his weaknesses (See 2 Cor. 12:7-10). Paul learned what God’s power was “made perfect in weakness.” In what ways do our weaknesses reveal God’s strength? Have you experienced the power of Christ at work in your times of weakness? Family Service: As Lutherans, we believe that we respond to what we have heard through the Good News of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ – given for you for the forgiveness of sins. Good works (good fruit) happens, and we do not even know about it. As parents, you can “create” opportunities for your kids to learn about service, with the understanding that service is not a “have-to” but rather a “get-to” – a “response-to.” Having heard the Gospel preached, we move beyond ourselves, caring for our neighbor. Think about the Scripture verses for the week and the conversations you have shared. God has gifted you and your children with abilities, personalities, and certain qualities. As a parent, family member, or friend, you can help them discover their unique gifts by encouraging them in the things that they do well and feel passionate that they can serve others. Family Traditions & Rituals: In the Gospel reading, Mark tells us that when Jesus went to his home of Nazareth, people did not accept him or welcome his message (see Mk. 6:1-6). Unlike the people of Nazareth, we want to always welcome Jesus into our lives. Give each family member a large piece of construction paper with which to design a “Welcome Jesus” placemat. Work together on making one additional placemat. Use your placemats when setting the table for family meals. Set an extra place for Jesus.
SCRIPTURE VERSE FOR THE WEEK: 2 CORINTHIANS 12:9-10 (NRSV)
“But [the Lord] said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.’ So, I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. Therefore I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities for the sake of Christ; for whenever I am weak, then I am strong.” Are you, your household, or your youth in need of a Bible? Contact Angie at the church.
