MAY 2012

Dear Brothers and Sister in the faith,

Christ is risen! Alleluia! I pray that this Easter season has been one in which you have been able to celebrate the peace of the risen Christ, and had your eyes opened to the life all around you! New life is evident at Holy Cross as we continue to enjoy weekend worship, and Wednesday nights together. The church is a-buzz on Wednesday nights with Midweek SS classes, Adult Education opportunities, Choirs, and Confirmation. All one needs to do is walk in the building, and you instantly pick up on the energy level and enthusiasm of all who are present to deepen their relationships with God and each other. As we finish out the year in early May, we are going to celebrate all the blessings we have had this past year. As we plan the celebration, I wanted to personally invite you and your family to come join us on May 9th for our FAMILY FAITH FEST. We will be gathering around 5:30pm for a carnival that has something for all ages. From games to a bouncy-house, face painting to a pizza dinner (served for just $1 a slice), our evening will be filled with fun. That same evening, as the celebration continues, we invite you to come into the Sanctuary at 7:00pm, where artist Eric Samuel Timm (an artist who has been at LifeLight) will be performing and creating a work of art that will stay at Holy Cross when the event is over. I have overheard lately how much folks have been enjoying the chance to get to know others better, how much people enjoy just being with each other, in and outside of worship. FAMILY FAITH FEST is another chance to come and be with your Holy Cross Family, and to bring your friends and neighbors, and to share with them the new life and joy that can be found here. I hope you will join us on May 9th. And in worship on Saturday or Sunday. The coffee is on, our doors are open, and YOU are welcome here!

Your partner on the journey, Pastor Amy Eisenmann

G ROWING ALONG THE J OURNEY MAY ADULT EDUCATION

Sunday Mornings at 9:30 in the Fireside Room: May 6: “Letters of Love” ~ Led by Sandy Jerstad. When Mark Jerstad was the Campus Pastor at Augustana College, he thought about putting his sermons into a book. But then he went to work for the Good Samaritan Society in Sioux Falls, where he became the President and CEO; and had no time to do the project. Mark died of colon cancer in 1997, but now his sermons live on through a book written by his wife, Sandy. Her new book is called “Letters of Love.” Sandy comes to share this book and their story. May 13: “1 Corinthians” ~ We will examine the correspondence from the apostle Paul to the early church in Corinth. Study led by Julie Thomas.

 A special thank you...

“Why I Am a Lutheran – Part 2: The Trinity” Spring Small Group

Holy Cross has the unique opportunity to experience a Luther Seminary course right here. Starting April 11 (7:00–8:30pm), we will examine the Christian doctrine of the Trinity: One God, three persons, through our Lutheran lenses. The course is taught by Dr. Steven Paulson, Professor of Systematic Theology at Luther Seminary in St. Paul. This is a six-week discussion, facilitated by Angie Smith. If you wish to order Dr. Paulson’s book, “Lutheran Theology (T & T Clark, 2011), you may do so, however it is not a requirement for this class. More information in the form of a handout is available at the Adult Ed bulletin board (near the south-end restrooms)

and online at www.holycrosslutheranchurch.org.

Dear students of the Genesis Adult Bible Study: Reflecting upon our time together, I wanted to send a brief note expressing my genuine thanks for allowing me the opportunity to engage Genesis – the Jacob stories more specifically – with you all. Your kind words of affirmation and encouragement, along with your thoughtful and probing questions, made the time most worthwhile! You are a special group who took seriously the wrestling with the biblical text in all its beauty, complexity, and unsettledness. It is my hope you were able to take away something meaningful from our brief time together, something that has allowed you to see the biblical text afresh and anew each time you approach it. And it is my hope that we will be able to come together again soon in the context of a community of faith seeking to learn more about the Bible and how to read it. And lastly, I am of the firm belief that a teacher is also always a student, and so I thank you for not only allowing me to teach you about Genesis but also for allowing me to learn from you. John E. Anderson, Ph.D. JOHN.ANDERSON@AUGIE.EDU

CHECK OUT THE HOLY CROSS LIBRARY!

New books are being added every day, including your favorite authors & new titles:

“Lutheran Questions, Lutheran Answers,” Martin Marty.

Lutherans often have asked questions about Lutheran theology and beliefs that are basic to the Christian faith itself. Featuring a unique question-and-answer format, the book is an accessible and concise treatment that provides the most frequently asked questions on important topics and brief but complete answers from a distinguished Lutheran historian and theologian.

“My Story, My Song: Mother-Daughter Reflections on Life and Faith,” Lucimarian Roberts & Robin Roberts.

Good Morning America co-anchor Robin Roberts and her mother, Lucimarian Roberts, encapsulates resilience, faith, and generations of joy in this slim and inspirational volume. Lucimarian (87) reflects concisely on a life buoyed by her deep love of music, as well as her commitment to her faith and civic service. “Amazing Gifts: Stories of Faith, Disability and Inclusion,” Mark Pinksky. Pinksky has gathered stories from churches, synagogues, and temples across the country, “stories of people with disabilities and the congregations where they have found welcome.” He has taken special care to include the widest range of challenges and seeks to share stories of how people with unique challenges have experienced their faith and how congregations have gained when they value these individuals’ gifts. “I READ THIS BOOK...” submitted by Amy Barr. I would highly recommend the book “Heaven Is for Real.” It is a true story about what a very sick 3-yr-old boy told his parents after he had emergency surgery. He described in detail what and who he saw in Heaven and how much God loves us. He talks about his deceased Grandfather who he had never met, and a sister who he hadn’t known (a miscarriage he had never been told about). The book is well written by the boy’s father who is a pastor in Nebraska. It is an amazing glimpse into eternity! Awesome! * Remember to save & turn in your CROSSROADS receipts: Holy Cross receives 5% off of the total amount spent toward the purchase of new books.

You still have time to donate yarn for the 2012 SD Synod Assembly (June 8-9).

Rev. Marlin Wangsness of St. Dysmas Prison Ministries is inviting congregations to collect and bring yarn to the Assembly as a donation to the knitting ministry, which in turn creates hats for those in need.

ALSO, all newborns in our congregation are given a small, fleece “taggie blanket.” Extra ribbon is neededc to create these gifts. Any color, size, and texture are welcome! Baskets for both donations are now located in the Fellowship Hall in the ‘donation area.’

...C ARING C ONTINUED STEPHEN MINISTRY Health & Wellness Fair RETURNING TO HOLY CROSS: — May 5 & 6 — On Saturday, May 5 (before & after worship) and Sunday, May 6 (between worship) the Health & Wellness Team is sponsoring a Health & Wellness Ministry Fair.

MAY IS THE MONTH FOR:

There are times when we all need a listening ear... a caring presence. Death Illness Loss of a relationship Homebound Loss of employment New & single parents

(1) Skin Cancer Awareness; (2) Mental Health Awareness (with a special emphasis on children); and (3) High Blood Pressure Awareness.

Caring for people in need or crisis is at the heart of a congregation’s ministry. The reality is that churches need a team of equipped lay caregivers and a plan to empower them. Otherwise, many people receive insufficient care or no care at all. Involving well-chosen, trained, and supervised people is a natural and effective way to meet the growing needs for care within a congregation. A Stephen Minister fills the void of ongoing care, providing a source of consistent, ongoing support and companionship for as long as the person needs it. Stephen Ministers: care, pray, encourage, and listen. They do not offer advice or provide counseling services. This summer two individuals will be trained as Stephen Leaders; and beginning in the fall, you will have the opportunity to receive 50 hours of training in Christian caregiving.

As a way to lift up their importance, you will have the opportunity to have your blood pressure checked, enter a drawing for Who benefits from Stephen Ministry? a “Summertime Tool Kit” gift basket, People who need care Our congregation & and sample various sunscreens... community Our pastors as well as receive Our laypeople valuable information & resources If you are interested in becoming a Stephen Ministry, on all three areas of focus. or feel that you could benefit from this caring ministry, please contact Angie Smith or Pastor Amy.

T HE O UTREACH T EAM ... ...would like to thank everyone who served well over 100 households at the MOBILE FOOD PANTRY on April 26th.

Your efforts to help those in need within our community are examples of faith-in-action. Reminder: May’s ‘food of the month’ is Tuna & Tuna Helper.
