CIRCLE, MICHIGAN CATEGORY: Feature GENRE: Drama WRITER: Matt Croyle SCENE DIRECTOR: Michael Foster SYNOPSIS Martin Sura thought he had the perfect life until he’s forced to inherit a mystery in the small town of Circle, Michigan. Sometimes losing a part of yourself opens your eyes to parts you never knew existed. BIO Matt Croyle is an accomplished writer, director, and creator from Pennsylvania. He is also the founder and Festival Director of the Oil Valley Film Festival. Matt’s first feature film, ‘Potential Inertia’, of which he produced, wrote, and directed, was released in December 2014. He completed his professional internship in theatrical stage management at the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera back in 1999. A graduate of Clarion University of Pennsylvania, Matt has had the opportunity, over the years, to work on projects featuring Seth Rogen, Ryan Reynolds, Jake Gyllenhaal, Kevin Smith, Ed Zwick, Emmy-award winner Rue McClanahan, Anne Hathaway, Julie Ann Emery, and renowned New York / Broadway music director Michael Biagi just to name a few. An award-nominated actor, he received two Charlotte Theater Award nominations for his role as the Narrator in Theatre Charlotte’s production of ‘The Happy Prince.’ in 2000. In 2011, Matt’s one-act play ‘Jerry’s Pub’ received its world premiere as part of the Canton One-Acts Festival in Canton, MI. Also in 2011, Matt launched the web series ‘Monster’ which was nominated for the Indie Intertube Audience Choice Award, and also screened and won him Outstanding Achievement In Cinematography in a Mockumentary Series at the 2012 Los Angeles Web Series Festival. He was a featured panelist that same year. Matt is a two-time runner-up of the scriptwriting competition at the Great Lakes Independent Film Festival. BIO Kathryn L. Scurry also known as “BK Screenwriter” is a multi-award winning screenwriter based in Houston, Texas. Growing up a native New Yorker, She has always had a taste for the arts dabbling in many different forms ranging from music, pastry arts to poetry. She is known for her body of works that are making its rounds through film festivals winning several awards ranging from “The Diamond Award” to “Honorable Mentions”. Her first project “June’s Baby Shower” (A Short Film) released in 2018 won the hearts of many including winning several awards, and distribution with “The On Channel”. Kathryn’s inspiration came from not only wanting to write and self-produce her own films but to also have a platform and distribution outlet. STRIP MALL CATEGORY: Feature GENRE: Drama WRITER: David Rowe SYNOPSIS Three friends are running a food truck out of their car, things are going well until Luke drops some food, upsetting Dave and things fall apart fast. BIO n 2008, a few years after graduating from the Seattle Film Institute, David Rowe made his first feature documentary, Fast Friday, which focused on the emerging track bike scene in Seattle. After the success of Fast Friday, David moved to Los Angeles to pursue filmmaking further. In 2011 David released his second feature documentary, To Live & Ride in L.A. and began freelancing in various aspects of production, directing, shooting and editing everything from music videos to commercials, as well as creating a comedy web series that was a finalist at the NBC Shorts Film Festival. Through his journey, Travis has a change of heart when those he once chastised from diverse backgrounds, offer his family safe haven after his former group comes looking for them. They thought they found the perfect leader (looks, charisma, young, raged & unique training) to spread their message. Yet they never imagined what would happen if they forced their “chosen-one” to unleash his most ruthless skills on them. Now they must find and silence him or risk a public relations nightmare. “Blackballed” is a fast-paced script that tackles racism, yet reflects the potential when society works together to fight against hate. Deep wounds must slowly heal slowly and outside forces must prevail as Travis and Lawrence forge one of the most unusual partnerships. BIO Though Phil began writing since 1998, he first ventured into screenwriting in 2016. In 2013, he completed his master’s degree in Liberal Studies in Borders with an emphasis in Migration, Health & Cultural Identity from Arizona State University. There, he studied creative writing, film analysis, taboo in texts & visual texts, and personal essays. He also has a master’s in Disaster Preparedness & Executive Fire Leadership and a bachelor’s in Social & Criminal Justice. He resides in Arizona. Phil writes about topics with social impact. He’s inspired by his surroundings to include as a five-year old in the heart of the 1971 Camden Race Riots, as a disabled Air Force veteran/military police or in the disaster preparedness field where he learned about forensic epidemiology. CATEGORY: Feature GENRE: Coming of Age WRITER: Miguel Orozco BUDGET RANGE: $200-$300K SYNOPSIS Pablo is a Mixteco boy and lives in Oxnard in a trailer park. He dreams about playing soccer. Pablo knows that his soccer hero, Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez is famous and that if he can be a like him, he won’t be invisible anymore. One day, Pablo and his friends sneak onto a soccer field and Pablo’s skills get him noticed by a coach. Pablo becomes the first Mixteco to play varsity soccer at the prep school. However, Pablo doesn’t fit in. Students have racist attitudes towards Mixtecos. Pablo’s father encourages Pablo to leave school and work in the fields. But things take an upturn and Pablo wins over the haters. A cheerleader named Angela finds herself falling for Pablo. He’s on top of the world, but then one day, Pablo’s attacked by a couple of bullies. It will be months before he can get back on the field and he loses his scholarship. Luckily, a teacher arranges for Pablo to get a choir scholarship and he works his way back on the team. Just as life is starting to stabilize, Pablo and his mother are dealt a blow when Pablo’s brother and dad are deported. Pablo stops playing soccer and starts working the in the strawberry fields. His dreams appear to be crushed. When all seems lost, Oxnard City comes together to support Pablo’s family. Pablo rejoins the team and wins the state championship, Pablo graduates from high school and gives the commencement speech in Mixteco and goes to college. BIO After writing and producing the award-winning film, “God Speaks Spanish” (Chicago Latino & NY Latino Film Festivals), Miguel co-founded Novelas Educativas, an educational film production company to produce and distribute films, including 16 Summers, featuring notable actor/singer Nick Cannon. Miguel works in many forms of entertainment, from writing for film and television to theater. In 2018, Miguel directed and produced the award-winning short documentary, American Migrant Stories. In 2016, Miguel founded Ánimo Theatre Company to produce plays to increase cultural awareness of diverse communities. Miguel started his career in Washington, DC as a Congressional Hispanic Caucus Intern and continued to work on the Hill as a U.S. Senate staffer. Miguel obtained a Master’s degree in Public and International Affairs from the University of Pittsburgh. SYNOPSIS FACT: In 1949, a wealthy citrus Mogul, by the name of J.E. Prentice, donated land to city to become the Prentice Park Zoo. Only it came with a very peculiar caveat. The zoo must house 50 monkeys on site at all times or else the zoo shall be willed to the oldest surviving heir of the Prentice family. LOGLINE: During a heist gone wrong, a young seasoned thief takes the fall for his friends and sentenced to community service at a zoo; but when he is blamed for the disappearance of a rare monkey, he must use his criminal skills to unravel a much deeper crime to clear his name and keep the zoo from closing. BIO I have a BA in Screenwriting from CSUN. I’ve acquired over 12 awards and notable mentions for my work as a screenwriter, an I’m a member of SAG-AFTRA and the Academy of Magical Arts at the Magic Castle. I’m often recognized for a national commercial I did for DirecTV with Charlie Sheen in 2012 and I recently finished shooting my first lead in a feature film which screens for the first time on May 30th. In 2014 he screened Soy Fuego at Cannes, a short film he produced during his residency at Newark’s Art Gallery “Solo(s) Project House”. Post college, Jessie has had the opportunity to learn and hone her filmmaking career in San Francisco, Oakland, New York and now, Los Angeles. Only having lived in California for nearly eleven years, her Youtube channel has just over fifty-two videos for one to stop by and check out. Screenwriting, directing and cooking are just a “few of Jessie’s favorite things,” also her five cats; Oliver, Mighty, Mississippi, Felix and Simba. After celebrating a job promotion, lifelong friends Ken Lowrie and Don Collier challenge each other to see whose girlfriend can drink the most. The uncomfortable morning after leads each character to question what happened the night before and reflect on their own morals on what it means to be in a relationship. The depths of friendship are tested when Don’s winter fling, Marcy, begins to entice Ken into some extracurricular physical activity behind everyone’s back. Ken’s girlfriend, Jen Rubio, struggles with her consistency of being attracted to the wrong men. Her recent breakup leaves her vulnerable in her first encounter with Ken. Although his approach is not something she would normally be attracted to, she decides to take a chance. This leads her into a long-term relationship that pushes her to the limit of what she is willing to stand for in a relationship. She is guided by her Mother, Susan Rubio, with her tough love and strikingly similar life experiences. BIO Steve Nevills graduated from Full Sail University in 2008 with a Bachelor of Science in Film Production. After spending a year as a production assistant in New York, working on national commercials and reality TV, he returned to post education. He earned a Master of Science in business from Full Sail University in 2010. From there, he spent time working in many different facets of production around the country. Mike has directed ten full-length productions, numerous short plays, and served as Assistant Director for two full-length plays as part of the Humana Festival of New American Plays. He will make his feature film debut in the upcoming The Art of Self-Defense by Riley Stearns. Mike is a past winner of both the Moth StorySLAM and Louisville’s inaugural Moth GrandSLAM. CATEGORY: TV Series GENRE: Comedy, Dark Comedy WRITER: Bruce Novakowski, Varun Saranga, Kelsey Flower BUDGET RANGE: TBD SYNOPSIS After years of failed auditions, actors (and roommates) Bruce and Varun, finally catch their big break getting cast as love interests opposite each other. However, Varun’s role has clear racial overtones, while Bruce is suddenly bombarded with shame over his newly discovered “white privilege”. A guilt-ridden Bruce goes AWOL while actor friend and newcomer, Kelsey, takes over on set and capitalizes on what he thinks will be his “Brokeback” moment. Varun confronts the director about the racially insensitive script and proceeds to do everything he can to get the production shutdown; even considering “brown face”? Meanwhile, Bruce finds out what it really means to form a support group for “Ashamed white men”. BIO Varun Saranga (Softcore (short); The 3Shade Show (sketch shorts)): Varun Saranga was born and raised in Scarborough, Ontario, where he attended Woburn Collegiate Institute. He became interested in acting through filmmaking, directing and starring in two student films, Nerdman and Small Fry. Both films were praised at the Toronto Youth Film Festival, especially for his performance. Varun was inspired to pursue an acting career professionally and landed his first major role playing the geeky but lovable AJ Mehta on the hit YTV show How to Be Indie. Other roles soon followed on Cartoon Network’s Unnatural History, Showcase’s Cra$h and Burn, and CBC’s Schitt’s Creek, CBC’s Working Mom’s, and CityTV’s Young Drunk Punk alongside Kids in the Hall alum Bruce McCulloch. Bruce Novakowski is an award winning, Canadian-based actor/filmmaker. He has appeared in more than 25 films, shows and digital series, including the features Mop King (world premiere at Austin Film Festival), Shooting the Musical (Award for Best Actor in a Feature Film, Canadian Film Fest) and the web series Inconceivable (Nominated for Best Short-form Series, Gotham Independent Film Awards). He can be seen in the SYFY network series Channel Zero: Candle Cove as deputy Simon Grove. Look for Bruce in the upcoming Amazon Studios original series, The Boys. Kelsey Flower (With You Always (short)): Kelsey Flower is a Toronto based actor originally from Calgary where he got his diploma from Mount Royal University’s Performance Program. Along with many theatre credits, Kelsey landed the lead role in Polyscope Productions “Adventures of a Pizza Guy”. Other film/TV credits include “Unauthorized Full House Story” (CBC), “A Thousand Yard stare” (Rambouxious Films), and most recently a Guest Star on “Private Eyes” (Global TV). Look for Kelsey as a Series Regular in the new Netflix series ‘Black Summer” Kelsey wrote his first short film, With You Always. Kelsey wrote his first short film, With you Always, which he also co-starred and produced in. The film is currently beginning the film festival circuit. In this duel between a woman willing to die and a man willing to kill, who will win? BIO Rafael Peixoto (Histórias do Lixo, Like a Boss, Dois Barcos): Advertiser with 21 years of experience, Rafael began his career as a musician. In 1997 he became a producer of international concerts, curator of Banco do Brasil Cultural Center in Brasília in 2000 and curator and producer of Banco do Brasil Cultural Circuit in 2004. From 2007 to 2011 he coordinated cultural sponsorships in Banco do Brasil, as well as advertising and live marketing campaigns. After producing more than 8 thousand artistic presentations and hundreds of communication actions, Rafael created Wikishows in 2011 and permanently moved away from Banco do Brasil the following year. As CEO and Creative Director of Wikishows, Rafael has carried out live marketing actions for companies such as SEBRAE - Brazil’s official bureau for entrepreneurship, Banco do Brasil, Mapfre Insurances, Caixa Econômica Federal, Ambev, Fundação Alphaville, Walmart, Baidu, Estácio, and many others. He created in 2012 the Web Reality Show Web “Like a Boss” for SEBRAE, a branded content experience and promotional activation that generated one trending topic on Twitter and a flashmob with more than 3 thousand people. Rafael also wrote and directed branded content for Ambev and Alphaville Foundation. In 2014 Rafael coordinated the communication of political campaigns. Rafael studies scriptwriting since 1997. He was one of the 40 screenwriters selected by award-winning author Aguinaldo Silva, among almost 600 postulants, for his Master Class of Soap-Operas, held in 2016, and was publicly praised by Aguinaldo. He has original three original series and two feature films sold to Brazilian production companies and waiting for green light to go under production. Rafael currently writes and pre-produces a musical scheduled to debut in 2020. He’s also writing two feature film scripts, commissioned by relevant Brazilian production companies, and has just written and directed the short film “Two Boats”, starring Rainer Cadete, Rocco Pitanga, Paula Jubé, and Fernanda Junqueira, scheduled to premiere in 2019.
