FROM SMART CITIES TO CREATIVE CITIES: INTERACTIVE TECHNOLOGIES FOR RESPONSIVE LANDSCAPES CHAIN REACTION: USING NETWORKS TO AFFECT CHANGE USC Thesis - Fall 2017, Spring 2018 Rebecca Hill My thesis project explores how emerging technologies can activate underutilized spaces. The proposal introduces multiple interfaces with immersive experiences that allow for participatory design and community connection across digital and physical infrastructure. Technologies researched include data sensing and actuation through projection mapping, augmented reality and digital fabrication. The goal of the thesis is to begin a conversation around interactive technologies as a tool to solve real-world problems. Air pollution became the focus problem as an example of how digital systems and user-oriented design creates a novel network that simultaneously reduces pollution particles and creates social cohesion.

MALAYSIA BIENNIAL 100 YC USC Architecture Studio - Spring 2017 Warren Techentin Students worked in teams to compete in the Malaysian Biennial, which proposes a new master plan development for Medini Iskandar. Technology, Knowledge, Transportation, and Commerce, were the driving principles for the Biennial. Our project focused on Medini’s southern-most neighborhood and proposed an urban landscape for health and wellness. The area mitigates rising sea levels and flood risk through a novel pier design and the incorporation of canals and water retention pools. The neighborhood acts as a netpositive oasis through water catchment & infiltration, algae biofuel production, bioluminescent plants, human energy, pollution capture, and wind and solar energy.

SPACESHIP FULLER WORLD BUILDING MEDIA LAB USC Cinema Certificate - Spring 2017 Alex McDowell + Trisha Williams + Joseph Unger ‘World Building’ is an approach founded by Alex McDowell, the production designer for Fight Club and Minority Report. Through collaborative efforts, students are currently working with The Buckminster Fuller Institute to design ‘Spaceship Earth.’ Based on Bucky’s vision for a resource-conscious planet, extreme exploration on alternative social, infrastructural, and ecological systems for a future world is leading to immersive experiences in virtual reality platforms that will completely reimagine the human experience.

CINESCAPE FROM OIL TO WATER USC Core Studio II - Spring 2016 Mia Lehrer + Astrid Sykes With a focus on the Baldwin Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles, students were able to learn about the rich history that spanned from impacts of oil drilling to the economic boom of the film and music industry. Culver City is called the “Heart of Screenland,” owing this title to Desilu Productions and Ray Charles’ RPM Studio. I embraced the history of the site, and shaped landscape to celebrate the heritage of local cinema, while also incorporating water managment systems and seasonal plant variation to enhance the cinematic experience.

FRAMING AGRO-CIVIC SYSTEMS REFUGEE CAMP URBANISM TO MIGRANT HOUSING: A LANDSCAPE INFRASTRUCTURE APPROACH USC Core Studio III - Fall 2016 Kelly Shannon + Dima Rachid The initial phase of the studio focused on landscape analysis of a refugee camp located in Calais, France, known as “The Jungle.” The camp was located on a portion of dunes along the northern coast, and surrounded by woodland. Analysis considered the political factors and events that shaped and transformed the landscape over time. The studio then moved to Fresno, California. My final proposal used landscape to frame a new urbanism, creating urban agriculture as a form of economic prosperity for migrants to have a successful transition to a new life in the United States.

January - 125 metal shipping containters erected as shelter option for 1,500 migrants (population was 4,000). Fingerprint scanning required. Wooden huts also added for additional housing option.

February - Authorities attempt to evict 1,000 migrants, south side of camp demolished, 12 huts set on fire, lasts over a month

May - Major brawl takes place, there are 40 injuries. An estimated 5,000 people lived at the camp, including 300 unaccompanied children
