INTERNSHIP MARKETING DEPARTMENT Holley Wilkes


Duties I am currently a member of a group of four in the marketing team at Camp America. I am essentially acting as their in house designer, working with the team creating a range of various publicity material. Combining ideas with clever design to portray clear messages in formats such as posters, flyers, banners and other promotional formats. The skills I am currently learning are working with to a client brief, professionally finished design and the branding of a company. Whilst looking though the design work I created for camp America you may not see a ‘branding’ technique. I was not give a select type, layout or colour palate. Most of the design are mimicking different designs to relay messages which would catch the audience eye and evoke emotions such as curiosity, interest and shock. During these next pages you will see a selection of on going work with an explanation as to what you are viewing.


Most proud The brief which I consider to be the most successful from my internship was this returner deal ticket. The mailer is designed to mimic a ticket to trick the receiver and fill them with curiosity. Without booking a ticket to anywhere and receiving one in the post this may also add confusing and interest around the mailer. The theme around the ticket is a festival ticket and the type and image was created in InDesign and Photoshop, using layered imagery. The poster on the right was created to advertise this deal further.

Internet/newsletter banners A lot of freedom was given to me on the design of internet and newsletter banners. I used an old film Polaroid effect with the use of black and white images to mimic old memories. I learnt how to work with in smaller more confined spaces in which I could design during these tasks.

CURRENT DESIGN When creating a poster when advertising competitively against other company with similar goals the team looked into current design and what was popular. After a creative discussion which I was part of it was designed on a ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’ poster with matching flyer. I found to mimic the design which was already out there attention to detail was critical. The size of type, height, spacing and slightly textured background and crown logo which the company supplied me with.

Time management Whilst working at the company I designed mainly for the marketing team, however when word of my work got around I was approached by another member of staff. Her brief considered the redesign of the left flyer a piece writing which the client had written as a sum up of the Camp America experience. The theme was a camp fire so I took this idea and found a photograph from Camp America and used a type which looked personal and handwritten. I also highlighted a few works through the design giving a double read to the type. The second piece of design was a interesting brief where a logo redesign to portray the empowerment of women when joining the Girl Scout’s Camp in America. The top logo is the female sign with America on the globe behind the logo. The second logo is a vector image drawn in InDesign of three women connected by holding hands in a powerful pose.


Camp is about growing, experiencing and stretching beyond the familiar, beyond the boundary of what you know or what you think you know. It’s about waking up early, following routines, bus-ing your own trays, rasing and lowering the flag, having fun, raccoons and skunks in you cabin, falling in love, singing songs, summer fun, telling ghost stories around a campfire, s’mores!, Being asked to the Camp Dance, meeting foreign counsellors with funny accents, leaning how to do the J-stoke in your canoe, falling down, getting back up, having friends to help you get back up. It’s also about overcoming fears- jumping off the second ledge into the river, giggling at night when the lights are out, burritos every Tuesday and pancakes every morning, sneaking out.... and getting caught. It’s a place where EVERYONE knows your business, where sleeping in your clothes is normal on cold nights, it’s about being safe. It’s about lifelong friendships, even when life is not long enough. Camp is about living with people who are different from you and learning to love their differences. It’s about building your confidence through trial and error, success and failure (is there a difference?), Trusting others, and then learning to trust yourself. ...Oh yeah, it’s also about learning to cope with the toilets with no doors!

Pencil and Paper For my first brief I was asked to create a flyer which would be distributed by email. This flyer was given to me to create because I came from a creative back ground I would be able to create design which would speak and catch the interest of pottery and ceramics experts which Camp America wanted to employ more of as counsellors to teach in America. I thought to shock and raise interest in my work and impress with a combination of not being given any imagery for this project. I traced over photographs a single lined drawing which I then scanned in and inverted on Photoshop. The red flyer uses humour where the other with the maths sum with words gives the theme of school, teaching and learning.

Ongoing All the work that was created in this book , was created in 6 days. I am currently enjoying working as part of the team at Camp America and am learning so many new skills and becoming a confidently skilled worker in an industry environment. I have gained a lot of encouraging feedback from my work and this internship is currently ongoing.
