Construction Technology

Holland College has two programs in the field of engineering technology. Both programs have received national accreditation from the Canadian Council of Technicians and Technologists. Certified technicians and technologists possess a combination of focused, theoretical knowledge and practical ability that has resulted in a strong demand for their skills across Canada and around the world.

Architectural Technology

Location: Charlottetown Centre Duration: 2 years Credential issued: Diploma, Architectural Technologist The Architectural Technology program encompasses all aspects of the architectural building industry. It offers an intensive study of architectural building sciences, the principles of architectural and engineering design, materials of construction and the preparation of contract documents. The program is accredited by the Canadian Technology Accreditation Board of the Canadian Council of Technicians and Technologists. Graduate opportunities: employment with architects, engineers, drafting services, interior designers, contractors, surveyors, government offices and agencies, construction product manufacturers, material suppliers, and inspection and testing firms.

Location: Charlottetown Centre Duration: 2 years Credential issued: Diploma, Construction Technician or Diploma, Lab/Field Testing Technician The Construction Technology program prepares students to enter the administrative and middle management levels of the building construction industry. The program is designed to give students a basic understanding of the overall building construction industry. The program is accredited by the Canadian Technology Board of the Canadian Council of Technicians and Technologists. Students in the program choose one of two profiles: Construction Technician or Lab/ Field Testing Technician. The Construction Technician profile focuses on estimating, scheduling, surveying, expediting, inspecting, coordinating and supervising new residential and commercial building construction and renovations. The Lab/Field Testing Technician profile focuses on inspection and testing of concrete, soil and asphalt materials. Graduate opportunities: employment with general and subcontractors, government offices and agencies, surveyors, construction product manufacturers, inspection and testing firms, building material suppliers, engineering offices, construction administrators and cost estimating firms.

Applied Sciences Applied science moves theoretical scientific principles into real world situations. Holland College offers five applied sciences programs, all of which are two years in length and located in the college’s Charlottetown Centre.

Bioscience Technology

Location: Charlottetown Centre Duration: 2 years. Credential issued: Diploma, Bioscience Technologist The two-year science-based diploma program is designed for people planning to work as technologists in biotechnology areas related to pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, environment, food and agriculture. Students learn basic laboratory skills, analytical and organic chemical procedures and microbiological techniques. Specialized techniques in molecular biology, genetics, tissue culturing, protein purification and immunology will be emphasized. Industrial processes in food, pharmaceutical and nutraceutical production will be covered, as well as the health and safety issues associated with these work environments. Graduates of the program have the appropriate blend of science background and handson laboratory experience to enable them to confidently enter and make significant contributions in any bioscience laboratory or biotechnology based manufacturing or production facility. Graduate opportunities: biological laboratory technologist, microbiology quality control technologist, microbiology technologist, food bacteriological technician, plant breeding technician, agricultural technologist, and aquaculture technician.

Environmental Applied Science Technology Location: Charlottetown Centre Duration: 2 years Credential issued: Diploma, Environmental Technician

The Environmental Applied Science Technology program trains Environmental Technicians to have the skills and knowledge required for the performance of employment activities that seek to manage the use of, impact on, and enhance the sustainability of, the environment. These activities include environmental monitoring, sampling and analysis techniques to work in the field of environmental protection and abatement. Graduate opportunities: federal and provincial departments of environment, federal and provincial departments of fisheries and oceans, federal and provincial departments of natural resources, provincial departments of occupational health and safety, municipal and industrial water, wastewater treatment facilities, municipal solid waste management, environmental engineering consulting firms and analytical laboratories, industrial health and safety, industrial process monitoring, and research facilities.

Computer Engineering Technology

Location: Charlottetown Centre Duration: 2 years Credential issued: Diploma, Computer Engineering Technologist; or Diploma, Computer Engineering Technician The two year Computer Engineering Technology program provides students with the skills to design, install, and maintain computer systems. The program features the Cisco Networking Academy curriculum and equipment, which will prepare the student to obtain the Cisco CCNA certification. The content of the course also prepares students to obtain A +, CNA and MCP certifications. The program offers students a choice of two levels of study: Computer Engineering Technician or Computer Engineering Technologist. The Technologist profile is nationally accredited by the Canadian Council of Technicians and Technologists. The nationally accredited curriculum enables graduates to seek employment opportunities locally, regionally, throughout North America and many international locations. Graduate opportunities: employment with computer retail companies, government agencies, telecommunication companies, repair depots, computer equipment manufacturers, microelectronic design firms, and companies with in-house technical staff.

Wildlife Conservation Technology Location: Charlottetown Centre Duration: 2 years Credential issued: Diploma, Wildlife Technician

Graduate opportunities: Canadian Parks Service, Canadian Wildlife Service, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, provincial fish and wildlife agencies, natural resource agencies, and the private sector, including industry and consultants.

The Electronics Engineering Technology program offers academic and practical training to meet the needs of the electronics industry as an engineering technologist. With a blend of academic content, practical training and experience, learners develop the required skills to apply electronic principles for circuit design and troubleshooting, to install and service electronic equipment and systems, and to install, operate and service modern electronic and data communications systems. The program is nationally accredited by the Canadian Technology Accreditation Board of the Council of Technicians and Technologists. Graduates qualify for associate membership in the Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists of Prince Edward Island, leading to full certified status (CET) after two years relevant work experience. This certification is recognized worldwide and is transferable across Canada. Graduates also receive Fibre Optics Association Certified Training and Cisco Certified Training, enabling them to pursue further certification. Graduate opportunities: Employment with consumer electronics retail companies, various governmental departments such as Canadian Coast Guard and Department of Defence, telecommunication companies, wireless service providers, wind energy companies, engineering firms, and audio visual departments within education and provincial governments.

Electronics Engineering Technology

The Wildlife Conservation Technology program, which is accredited by the North American Wildlife Technology Association, trains students as wildlife technicians to work in the field of fish and wildlife conservation.
